old user needing advice on new set up

Recommended Posts

Hi, i have used xpenology years ago but was given  a DS215J and has been fine until i upgraded to a 4k tv, plays 4k content a bit stuttery ar times though but is only 2 drives. I have a nas using windows 10 but am not too happy with it

my nas is MSI Z390 pro with an i3 8100 (coffe lake graphics) with 16GB ram and  4x4TB & 4x3TB drives. I also have an EVO m.2 128GB on USB 3.1 adaptor (for using xpenology)

I want to be able to use the drives and watch 4K mkv movies, my questions are

Is my set up okay?

What DSM would be best suited foir this amout of drives & 4K files ?

Thank you in advance

that looks weird, xpenology only uses the usb for the loader and the kernel (only e few megabyte) the system is on every disk you install in you dsm system (1st partitons 2.4GB), is a raid1 over all disks so as long as one disks works the system will boot

for usb you just need simple usb flash drive (there a small versions that don not stick out that much), the image you put on it is just 50MB so any size does it and there is no much to speed up when just reading a few MB before starting to read from disk

hard to check if what you got is right

with a 8100 coffee lake you want 1.04b 918+ dsm 6.2.3

next for installing: (just replace 6.1 with 6.2 and loader 1.02 with 1.04b, the steps are still the same)

if you have trouble editing the loader in win10

https://xpenology.com/forum/topic/29872-tutorial-mount-boot-stick-partitions-in-windows-edit-grubcfg-add-extralzma/

the nic of you board might need a newer driver then the default driver on the loader, if you cant find it in network on 1st boot try the newer extra/extra2 from here

https://xpenology.com/forum/topic/28321-driver-extension-jun-103b104b-for-dsm623-for-918-3615xs-3617xs/

your systemboard has 6 sata ports and you have 8 disks, if you look for a controller i'd suggest one with a jmb585 (pcie 4x card, pcie 3.0, 2 lanes used, 5 sata ports)

m.2 support in 918+ need patching and you might loose it when updating (repatching), with just one m.2 its only read a cache, imho not worth the money and time with just a 1G nic, most of the time the cache will not be used in a home use enviroment

(atm there is no other use beside as cache drive in dsm for a m.2 nvme drive)

if you are in for 4k hardware transcodig you will need this

good luck with that nice text adventure, it will at least keep you busy for a few hours  ;-)

sorry for not getting back sooner but have hit a wall when getting this far

image.thumb.png.11599347aec6d58775b582e9b8dbb091.png

If you booted the USB drive in EFI mode then you will see the same text without the last 3 lines but that's ok.

Do not see the last 3 lines and for some reason am unable to see the NAS on my network.

I have gone through the process several times even with different images and USB drives with no luck. Even tried with / without hard drives.

My system is

motherboard MSI Z390-A-Pro

Intel Core i3 1800 (1151/Quad Core/3.60GHz/6MB/Coffee Lake/65W/Graphics)

Have today ordered a dual Lan Adapter with Dual Realtek 8111G Chipset hoping this will do the trick.

Any help really appreciated

Just got to set up my drives and start the long process of transfering files.

Thanks again 😀
