 Hello all

ive retrieved my old n40l from the loft where its sat for about 5 years, i lost my mobile about 6 months ago with nearly 2 years of pics not backed up on it!

so determined to get my n40l up and running as a nas, where best to start? ive read on here while just looking for info that i might or might not need to up date my NIC?

my N40l is fairly stock, i changed/ added the sound card a few years back to give me s/pdif, and i will be ordering a couple of seagate ironwolf 4tb hdds probably tomorrow

i would like the latest stable version of xpenology.

are there any upgrades to the n40l that are regarded as must haves or highly suggestible or is the stock good enough

thanks

no the internal nic (i guess broadcom) should be fine with dsm 6.2.3

dont waste time with 918+ loader 1.04b, your cpu is to old

https://xpenology.com/forum/topic/13333-tutorialreference-6x-loaders-and-platforms/

read the faq section and continue in the tutorial section with this

https://xpenology.com/forum/topic/7973-tutorial-installmigrate-dsm-52-to-61x-juns-loader/

(!!! disable C1E in bios, afair yous is a amd based unit)

its pretty much the same for dsm 6.2.3 but you use loader 1.03b instead

https://xpenology.com/forum/topic/7848-links-to-loaders/

maybe read this recent thread too

https://xpenology.com/forum/topic/38806-working-dsm-61-and-63-on-hp-microserver-gen7-n40l/

you can also consult this section to see if there are any comments about your hardware

in that tutorial it has

Change mac1=0011322CA785 to mac1=[your NIC MAC address #1]. is that the mac of my pc or of the NAS?

also the USB with the loader i assume i remove this once its setup it dosent need to be left in the NAS?

thanks

the mac of the system the nas is running on, its important if you want to use WOL

yes and no, you  will need it every time the system boots so it needs to be where it is

you can remove it while its running for backup or updating it (rarely needed), its not mounted when the nas is running

looks like i forgot to mention the faq
