Possible new AMD based DS1621+

looks like they got tired of waiting for new intel soc's

 

4x1GbE?, just syno's crap, that soc has a 2x10Gb interface support

it's syno family is"v1000" (same as amd's name for the soc class), nothing in 6.2.2 kernel source or tool chain we have from synology

would be nice to see 6.2.3 or 7.0 kernel source, tool chain and toolkit (edit: there is 6.2.2 since 10/2020)

(btw. in september synology added geminilake 6.2.2 source to its gpl source repository, not that we could make much out of this, only useful might be the new i915 driver they added for geminilake but we already have that driver in 918+ with dsm 6.2.3)

 

there is also a new ds1621+ 6.2.3 *.pat file from 9/2020 in synologys repository (includes the u2 updates already) - so its not a "possible" anymore its already in release

will be interesting if they will address hardware transcoding in videostation with that soc (i guess no intel qsv support)

You know what is fucking more annoying? Their list of supported NICs. FFS Synology - you are doing this on fucking purpose - 4 NICs supported. 2 from Synology ($200+) and 1 from Intel ($500 used) and 1 from unknown company.

 

Why would they NOT support Intel X540T2 or X550T2? What the *******.

 

Do you think it's still possible the drivers are baked in for X540T2?

 

I'm in process of buying one to get a bit more stable environment, but this is infuriating.

a quick glance in the drivers of the pat file from 6..2.3 shows more 10G nic's then just intel

 

these are the drivers that belong to the list of nic's they support but you can use all alder hardware supported by this driver, the drivers usually have a list of supported pci id's

so as a summery i'd say its a nicely usable original unit, the 4x1GBit is questionable (as the 4GB RAM default is) but it can be extended and the default driver set isn't to bad so it will not burn a hole in your wallet when adding a 10G nic, especially mellanox and aquantia are cheaper ones

Its original price (from manufacturer) is way less that what it's being sold for. I think their plan is to get sales on this unit and make larger profit on it.

not sure how i came to 4 x1G ports for the 1621+ but there seem to be 2x1G and 1x10G port, so its not that bad after all

 

maybe synology will have m.2 nvme usable as normal data volume later with 7.0? qnap does support that (and even more) so they need to move or people will not consider them for a new unit anymore, 2 slots in the unit and 2 more as pcie card might be ok

and hope the card you buy is compatible anough to run (did that with a tehuti card i bought from qnap but did not work with a later bought tehuti card as this card had another phy chip and did not work with the older/limited synology driver)

it looks like connectx-3 is supported by the drivers

so looks like the card in your link would be ok

connecting to a brocade 1020 should be no problem as long as both have sfp+ then dac or optical can be used, if one has sfp+ and the other rj-45 10G the its not that easy

it looks like connectx-3 is supported by the drivers

so looks like the card in your link would be ok

connecting to a brocade 1020 should be no problem as long as both have sfp+ then dac or optical can be used, if one has sfp+ and the other rj-45 10G the its not that easy
