Install XPEnology on USB or ESXI?

If you're new to Xpenology and you don't need to run virtual machines then it's probably best to go with the USB option. The N54L isn't really going to give you the best performance for virtualisation in a production environment with moderate activity. Both methods are well supported on the N54L apart from the known issues listed for the current 5.1 EXPEnoboot if you go the virtual route.

You can find tutorials for both methods on the xpenology.nl website.

How is the RAID performance? Some people said not really good on RAID and better do a backup every month.

RAID performance, RAID drive tolerance and Backup have completely different purpose and should not be compared, interchanged or even related.

RAID is for drive redundancy and different levels can provide different performance. It is for drive fault tolerance and Its not a replacement for backup. You delete.corrupt some files and its deleted, corrupted on all the drives.

Backup to another media/location is necessary if you value your data. Doesn't mater if you use single drive or supper redundant RAID.

RAID performance is fine, almost any system you will get your hands on will be limited by Ethernet( large files) or disk IO (small files) and not by your CPU doing RAID calculations.

RAID is not about Backup, Backup is always required, RAID only sometimes is required.
