Installing bootloader

Hi,

I decided to install Xpenology on my DIY NAS. Only one question occured.

When i install the bootloader on a USB disk, i need to keep de USB disk attached to my NAS for everyday use? I assume the bootloader installation only touches the USB Stick and afterwards DSM is installed onto my HDD?

So the USB Disk is still used to boot the system?

Hope you guys understand what i'm trying to ask.

Not 100% sure but I think actually it's not.

iirc the DSM is only installed on Vol 1. (I know packages, for example, ask which volume to install on but also they only end up on the onne volume.)

Technically,if you have only 1 volume and all your drives are RAIDed in it then I guess it's on all the drives. Otherwise, pretty sure it's not.

DSM IS on every disk. DSM builds a raid, that covers all disks in your system. If you look at your disks, they all contain 2 partitions in the beginning (DSM and swap-partition), and then the volume partition(s) where you store your data.

Packages are often installed on volume 1 if they need to store some data.
