I think the Areca controller is more specifically the part that is not playing well with current DSM images.  The rest of the system seems like it should work fine. So you have the choice to find another more compatible controller, or if Areca is supported by ESXi, install on that, then RDM the drives into DSM (a little bit labor intensive but equally functional)

You know that's an interesting idea.

Especially considering i cant use the console anyway.

I may also pass through the 10Gbit NICS - hmmmmm

Okay so I stuck an ADAPTEC 52445 controller in.

I was hoping (perhaps needlessly) that it would just "SPRING" to life and show me the 24 drives.

NOPE.

Now I begin the process of trying other EXTRA.LZMA files and also setting up JBOD vs. 24 separate RAID0 sets.

I'll keep my eye on my email for notifications in case anyone has an idea on what gets me to the finish line quickest.

1 - Did you see any drives at all? (depending on your bootloader, there is a limit of 12/16 drives (out of the box)).

2 - Does this card support IT mode?

1 - No drives at all.

2 - IT mode?  I don't know what the acronym means, but I did try RAID0 with just one disk and also JBOD on each disk.

Finally, dmesg doesn't show evidence of the card at all.

initiator target mode, its from scsi/sas

might also be called direct mode, it a mode where every disk can be seen as a single disk from the system

there should at least be a pcie device with vid/pid  in dmesg or with lspci
