Sniper_X Posted July 25, 2020 Share #1 Posted July 25, 2020 I have spent 5 hours learning about the various ways that people install Xpenology and i have seen that ARECA Controllers are (or were) supported (or maybe drivers were provided in an extral.zma file?) Getting right to the point... I'm probably an idiot for not understanding this but HOW do I install a version of Xpenology that will support an ARECA 1200 series SATA card?! I need about a half-pound of Advil and a few shots of vodka at this point.
IG-88 Posted July 25, 2020 Share #2 Posted July 25, 2020 arcmsr.ko is part of my extended driver set (its not supported from jun's loader itself) so whatever loader you are using (i did not specify) you will have to use a corresponding extra.lzma to extend the driver set https://xpenology.com/forum/forum/91-additional-compiled-modules/ you also did not specify what hardware you are using, there might be other problems too i'd suggest starting with a disk on a internal ahci compatible port and get the system running before trying to use the areca controller
Sniper_X Posted July 25, 2020 Author Share #3 Posted July 25, 2020 (edited) So, I did get the server up and running before i posted this. That's how I knew it wasn't seeing the 24 drives on the ARECA controller. The hardware I mentioned previously as being ASUS, but to be specific, this is built like so: Motherboard: ASUS DSBF-D RAM: 32GB CPU: Dual Xeons (6 cores each.) CONTROLLER: ARECA 1280 ML (ver C) There is also an SSD on the SATA port on the motherboard. It always sees that drive and is fine. The link you sent is to a forum and i have seen that area and read much of it. Do I just simply take the EXTRA.LZMA file and replace the one in the BIN image using OSFMOUNT? I ask because the last time I replaced an "extra.lzma" file, it just hung - i let it stay hung overnight too and still frozen in the morning. What is the process? Also, how can i see the boot process on the server console? This synboboot just makes a console screen that does nothing. I would like to have more use out of the console than that. If you want to monitor console messages, connect a serial port, run a terminal app, and boot messages are available there.

Sniper_X Posted July 25, 2020 Author Share #6 Posted July 25, 2020 So, I am working with the image file: Jun's Loader v1.03b DS3617xs Synoboot_3617.zip | 19.5 MB | MD5 = 94d18efbc349da2bd45d6e57adabc54f I selected it because i saw in a table that it supports 24 drive, which i have. This bootloader brings the system online without issue - except that it wont see the ARECA card or its 24 drives. Then, using OSFMount, I mounted the BIN file and opened the 2nd partition, saw the EXTRA.LZMA file and replaced it with this one: extra.lzma for ds3617 v4.8http://s000.tinyupload.com/?file_id=82063388171933855891 This boots, but does not start the network. Connecting to the serial port console, I see only loopback when I type IFCONFIG: ifconfig lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:65536 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B) DiskStation> I have read that perhaps I should return to the unmodified SYNOBOOT.BIN image and them attempt to manually start the card. Once again, i get no network at all. I'm certain that I'm doing this all wrong. I'll try unpacking the EXTRA.LZMA file and manually adding the driver. IG-88 Posted July 25, 2020 Share #10 Posted July 25, 2020 also replace the rd.gz and zImage along with the extra.lzma, take the two files from the dsm 6.2.3 *.pat file, you can open it with 7zip what do you see on the serial console? if the drivers do not load/work there should be error messages you can also login with the serial console and have a closer look on dmesg

Will work on doing what you said with the file replacements. At this time i have Re-imaged my USB back to the original Loader v1.03b DS3617xs. I do want clarification though... You said: "replace the rd.gz and zImage along with the extra.lzma" Does this mean that I will find those files in the EXTRA.LZMA file and i need to replace all those in the synoboot.img file using FSMount? You then said: "take the two files from the dsm 6.2.3 *.pat file" Now, this confuses me... "the two files" from the .PAT file or what? I know you are likely being clear, but to me, my head is all scrambled after hours of hacking at this.

Finally I will take the two files i retrieved above from the PAT image and repalce thier counterparts found in the Loader v1.03b DS3617xs (Synoboot_3617.zip) IMG file as well. Is this accurate? I'll poke around in the BIOS, and maybe disabling the SATA controller gets me past it, but, i would like those to work so I can use SSDs on the MB as cache
