TheCUS N5550 video howto for DSM 6.2

Hi gquiring,

Thanks for showing how to install DSM on the N5550. I just installed DSM 6.2.3.25426 on my NAS.

Have you managed to control the fan-speed? Because the thing is blowing at full speed.

I have two N5550's and this way, they will produce a lot of noise....

Thanks,

Arno

I’ll post the steps from the above thread that work for me. They’ve survived a couple of updates so far (also from 6.1 to 6.2).

Please read everything first before doing the actual stuff!

I logged in as root: sudo -i

Then, from the thread above, I followed post #36 by 'gdw1963'.

However:

* I did not edit the .profile

* I created file S99fancontrol.sh in /volume1/@optware/etc/init.d/S99fancontrol.sh

Do note that running pwmconfig will overwrite the contents of /etc/fancontrol.

The contents of my /etc/fancontrol are:

# Configuration file generated by pwmconfig, changes will be lost
INTERVAL=5
DEVPATH=hwmon1=devices/platform/it87.656
DEVNAME=hwmon1=it8728
FCTEMPS=hwmon1/device/pwm1=hwmon1/device/temp2_input hwmon1/device/pwm3=hwmon1/device/temp2_input
FCFANS=hwmon1/device/pwm1=hwmon1/device/fan1_input hwmon1/device/pwm3=hwmon1/device/fan3_input
MINTEMP=hwmon1/device/pwm1=20 hwmon1/device/pwm3=20
MAXTEMP=hwmon1/device/pwm1=60 hwmon1/device/pwm3=60
MINSTART=hwmon1/device/pwm1=150 hwmon1/device/pwm3=150
MINSTOP=hwmon1/device/pwm1=70 hwmon1/device/pwm3=70
MINPWM=hwmon1/device/pwm1=70 hwmon1/device/pwm3=70
MAXPWM=hwmon1/device/pwm1=255 hwmon1/device/pwm3=255

As you can see I assigned the temp and fan monitors different than gdw1963 so the result of running sensors are:

It's summer now and the temperature outside is near 25 degrees C, inside it's a little cooler: 23 degrees C. The fans are NOT rotating at max speed.

Current disk temperatures (not shown but can be found in Storage Manager >HDD/SDD > Health info) are 34-35 degrees C.

temp3:        +33.0 C  (low  = -68.0 C, high = +52.0 C)  sensor = thermal diode

I did not do the last steps, after the last 'shutdown -h now' I was done.

If everything turns out well your NAS reboots, fans are high and then after a while they go quiet.

Do note, that I have enabled Smart Fan Control in BIOS, I enabled it AFTER doing the pwm settings, first you just should have them enabled.:

Smart CPU Fan - Enabled
Start temp: 30 degrees C.
Smart AUX Fan - Enabled
Start temp: 30 degrees C.

Good luck!

Hi.

I can not get it to work, I have tried recording the images in different USB, I have tried 1.3b and 1.4b.
And this always happens to me

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijagaVrwPsM&feature=youtu.be

I have tried to copy the files "zImage and rd.gz" from the PAT file to the second partition as I read in the forum and nothing

You are not copying the correct file.  Have you use OSFMount to modify the grub.cfg for MAC address, VID/PID and serial numbers?

Hi,

Where did you guys get the it87 module from?

# Configuration file generated by pwmconfig, changes will be lost
INTERVAL=5
DEVPATH=hwmon1=devices/platform/it87.656
DEVNAME=hwmon1=it8728
FCTEMPS=hwmon1/device/pwm1=hwmon1/device/temp2_input hwmon1/device/pwm3=hwmon1/device/temp2_input
FCFANS=hwmon1/device/pwm1=hwmon1/device/fan1_input hwmon1/device/pwm3=hwmon1/device/fan3_input
MINTEMP=hwmon1/device/pwm1=20 hwmon1/device/pwm3=20
MAXTEMP=hwmon1/device/pwm1=60 hwmon1/device/pwm3=60
MINSTART=hwmon1/device/pwm1=150 hwmon1/device/pwm3=150
MINSTOP=hwmon1/device/pwm1=70 hwmon1/device/pwm3=70
MINPWM=hwmon1/device/pwm1=70 hwmon1/device/pwm3=70
MAXPWM=hwmon1/device/pwm1=255 hwmon1/device/pwm3=255

i got a (i think pretty similar) thecus (N2200 XXX), on which fancontrol used to work with OMV and the it87 kernel module.

I installed the DS3615xs pat file. but was not able to control the fan.

Any ideas?

regards

Busterix

Hi there. I have the same problem on thecus N5550. Everything is working properly, except for the fans that are working in full speed all the time.

Can you please help me fix it? I tried to follow your solution, but my files are different than yours. Please note that linux is not my strongest point :)

Thanks in advanced

A couple of updates.  DSM 6.2.4.x does not work.

I also updated one of my N5550's today with WD Red Plus 12TB drives.  The hardware sees the drives.  Only minor issue is the mounting screws don't line up with trays.  You can secure each drive with two screws only.
