Hi,

I have an old system HP Pro 3500 which I would like to install XPEnology but it seems like I can't, the DiskStation is not found by Synology Assistant nor at https://find.synology.com. Already tried a couple of option but every one failed on different status:

System:

HP Pro 3500

Mobo: 701413-001 H61

Intel i5-3470 CPU @ 3.20GHz

4GB DDR3

BIOS: v8.14 01/23/2013 (last available)

NIC: Realtek PXE B03 D00

NIC PCI: Realtek PXE B04 D00

Case 1:

Loader: 1.04b [6.2/6.3]

DSM: DS918+

Failed @: No DiskStation found on LAN

Case 2:

Loader: 1.02b  [6.0.3 to 6.1.7]

DSM: DS3617xs

Failed @: Installation go through but when the DiskStation reboots get to "Migrate" or "Re-install" installation

Case3:

Loader: 1.02b MBR_Genesys

DSM: DS3617xs

Installation done : DiskStation found, installation process fully done, created Server and User, after reboot DiskStation was found and got access, Update to last available DSM version

Failed @: Reboot DSM, couldn't be found anymore.

Hi there!

In my experience, HP Servers usually function the best as a 3615xs with the 1.03b loader by Jun.

However, be aware that on some versions, the onboard NICs will stop working since some versions apparently only support Intel NICs.

Are you certain that pid and vid of the stick and the mac address(es) are correct and that you saved the grub before dismounting?

I know that might seem like a dumb question, but things like that were the most common mistakes that both me and a couple of friends of mine did because we were too impatient.

And last but not least, I´d recommend deleting all data on the HDDs in between installations. In case 2, DSM could be partially installed or just be corrupt and case 3 could see the data on the HDDs as an already existing DSM and therefore just try to recover the data, which fails because said data is corrupt. I hope you get what I mean... ;)

Anyways, best of luck with your installation. If it fails again, you could try installing a virtualization OS and try it there, maybe that works.

Hi @Apfelbomber,

Thank you for replying, I'll give a shoot to the ds3615xs tonight at home. On this board I don't have Inter NIC, it's like there's something to do with the NIC. Before each installation I format the USB as the SSD. USB using DISKPART to delete the EFI partition and the SSD using Disk Management to be sure no other partition still there.

So far, I can´t see anything out of the ordinary. My best bet would be to get a cheap Intel NIC (I bought one for not even 25€, 2-port, 1gbit) and try it with that. I´m currently working on a couple of Dell servers and I´m having a similar issue as you do, though it´s not even working with my Intel NIC.

Just try a couple of different configurations, loaders and whatnot, there´s always something that you need to figure out before it works... ;)

If you have a spare HDD, try that out too. Especially with your case 3. Usually, it doesn´t matter whether it´s an SSD or an HDD, but you never know.

Good luck! :)

thats not going to work as 918+ needs at least 4th gen intel cpu, yous is 3rd gen

if you use loader 1.02b then its only going to work with DSM 6.1.x

when you updated to latest it would mean 6.2.3 ant that would need loader 1.03b

and when looking through the table on the link above you will see that loader 1.03b does not work in uefi mode, you would need to change in csm/legacy mode and use the non uefi usb boot device

if you dont need that installation i'd suggest start over with loader 1.03b and dsm 6.2.3, the realtek nic should work ootb with loader 1.03b and dsm 6.2.3

Hi @IG-88,

But I give up but just to info you. I tried loader 1.03b on DSM 6.2.3.

DS3615xs

Step 1: Downloaded: https://mega.nz/#!OV4gVKyZ!dCgfXx1bgAOyvbFwFiov3s7RSNoFuqnAcNmSllLoUiw

Step 2:

a) Mounted with OSFMount

b) Edited [grub.cfg]

  • Changed VID, PID of the USB drive
  • SN generated for DS3615
  • MAC of the node

c) Added files to 2nd partition of [synoboot.img]

  • Downloaded [extra.lzma] for DS3615xs
  • Extracted [rd.gz] and [zlmage] for [DSM_DS3615xs_25426.pat]

Step 3:

Used [Win32DiskImage] to write [synoboot.img]

Step 4:

Booted from USB - No - UEFI mode

Result could't boot...

Thx anyway...

why not the mbr version like in the successful 1.02b test

the extra.lzma might be wrong 15.12.2019 is in the timeframe of dsm 6.2.2 and thats incompatible you would need to use jun's original from loader 1.03b ( can be extracted with 7zip) or my new one for 6.2.3

Thank you very much but where can I find the new 6.2.3 compatible [extra.lzma] ?

there is a section for additional compiled modules, the thread about the 6.2.3 driver is this

https://xpenology.com/forum/topic/28321-driver-extension-jun-103b104b-for-dsm623-for-918-3615xs-3617xs/

also as mentioned you can use the "old" extra.lzma that came with loader 1.03b the realtek driver in there should work too

in the 1st post you wrote just realtek so i was asuming the usual realtek 8168/8111

after looking for the specific computer it seems to be al little more exotic?

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03364089

"Realtek RTL8171E Gigabit Ethernet controller (standard)"

never heard of that chip before

can you provide a pci vendor and device id like lspci would deliver, maybe boot up live linux from usb and ckeck with

lspci -k | grep 'Kernel driver'

whats the id and what driver is used

if i assume a vendor / device id of 10ec / 8171 then i find its a rtl8191 and thats a wifi chip

https://pci-ids.ucw.cz/read/PC/10ec/8171

???

looking for rtl8191 and rj45 results in a gigabit pci card

https://www.aliexpress.com/i/4000141204870.html

as the computer in question pretty old and the chip too then there should be a driver in the 4.4.x kernel already

never seen such a card before or at least can't remember it

so i guess we should come up wit a working driver

still, please find out what the vendor and product id of that onboard nic is and if you have a more common nic at hand you can get this computer working with a added nic

edit: from the above assumption the driver in question would be rtl8192se

Hi,

Just to inform you guys, I upgraded my hardware  to:

Mobo: MSI B250 PRO VDH

CPU: i3-7100

RAM: 16 DDR4 2333

Cooler: Hydro H60 High Liquid CPU Cooler (Old one I still had)

DS918+ runs perfectly, no issues at all. Already running Virtual machines as Win10 and Ubuntu.

Thx for your help!
