trek102 Posted May 28, 2020 Share #1 Posted May 28, 2020 Hello all, does anyone know where the messages are stored for the Synology Chat app? I assume there is a database somewhere. Any ideas? thanks Marc
jensmander Posted May 28, 2020 Share #2 Posted May 28, 2020 Synology stores it in a Postgres SQL DB, including data from the MediaServer, NoteStation, etc. Enable SSH/Terminal access and connect with PuTTy (or similar tools). enter: sudo -u postgres psql followed by your admin password. Your input cursor should change to "postgres=#". The command \l (<- little L) shows a list of all databases. To connect to the synochat DB type \c synochat With \q you'll quit the session. trek102 Posted May 28, 2020 Author Share #3 Posted May 28, 2020 thanks for this! Very helpful. Do you happen to know if actual chat messages can be retrieved (after they are purged inside the app)? Or do we have to remove the records from the SQL database to be sure? Also, are the messages from encrypted chats also encrypted in the DB or can they be read? jensmander Posted May 28, 2020 Share #4 Posted May 28, 2020 No, I don’t know how Synology handles encrypted messages inside the database or if they remain after a purge. Maybe you could try the archive viewer as an admin user. https://www.synology.com/en-global/knowledgebase/DSM/help/Chat/chat_archive_viewer

trek102 Posted May 29, 2020 Author Share #6 Posted May 29, 2020 Hi - we tried the above and also did a few steps to unlock Postgres so we could see the inside of databases. Sadly, now Chat wont start anymore. It seems that postgres is not launching anymore. ANy tips?
