I got the modules loaded with insmod but trying to mount with "mount -t 9p -o trans=virtio <mount tag> <local path>" threw errors (special device missing/no channels available). My google skills failed at solving these errors, the top answer being a missing module (virtio_input) that isn't present in your extra.lzma.

virtio_input is not used by synologys virtual dsm and i've not stumbled upon it yet (i never used kvm)

integration virtio into the loader is on my list, i added virtio_input

beside this i even don't know what the 9p modules are good for but i guess its enough to find out in what succession they are needed to load to make a test version

Did not know this. Modprobe didn't return any errors though so I thought it was working.

afair there was some information missing for modprobe to work but maybe i'm wrong at all or that changed in the last 2 years

I tried modifying the rc.modules according to this post where someone got 9p working on xpenology in docker but ofsmount fails to mount the lzma on two windows machines i tried it on...

i guess you wanted to mount the usb or the *.img file in windows to access the extra.lzma

there is something in tutorials

https://xpenology.com/forum/topic/29872-tutorial-mount-boot-stick-partitions-in-windows-edit-grubcfg-add-extralzma/

the flaws in that can be fixed so that win10 can access it the normal way, i used MiniTool Partition Wizard Free, converted the loader to MBR and back to GPT, that fixes the problem

(its not much tested, not elegant , so its not mentioned anywhere yet, i would prefer a way with some open source tool but it was not that important as i fixed it on my usb's i use for testing)

Last thing to try is get a utility like ofsmount for linux

you could use a usb or just mount the img, "mount" is the thing you are looking for

maybe just use a ready made usb and moount that to access extra.lzma

i will have some time this weekend to work on extra's and drivers, maybe i should do a in between version with virtio and some newer realtek drivers

Thanks for your effort and looking into my problems, I know I'm a fringe case...

9p is a driver used to mount a VM host's file system inside the guest VM giving the guest direct access. In my case I'm running Xpenology on UnRAID and want unraid to handle the physical disks and parity and xpenology to handle the files. Photostation wont work with smb/nfs shares and i'm hoping it'll work with 9p...

the new realtek drivers did not compile aginst old kernel 3.10.105 of 3615/17

the only new i could make would be for 918+

Is there any way I can help with this for the 3617? The driver source is "supposed" to work with 2.6 and above.

918 will work but it has issues:

No cpu governor, even using the scalar script. I either get 800mhz or 8 core turbo, no in between.

CPU support locked to 8c/8t

synology uses this in its virtual dsm

insmod /lib/modules/virtio.ko
insmod /lib/modules/virtio_ring.ko
insmod /lib/modules/virtio_pci.ko
insmod /lib/modules/virtio_blk.ko
insmod /lib/modules/virtio_net.ko
insmod /lib/modules/virtio_scsi.ko
insmod /lib/modules/virtio_console.ko

and i found this somewhere else (its different from what you choose)

virtio.ko
virtio_ring.ko
virtio_net.ko
virtio_blk.ko
virtio-rng.ko
virtio_balloon.ko
virtio_console.ko
virtio_mmio.ko
virtio_pci.ko
virtio_scsi.ko

there is nothing in dmesg like as if its not even loaded at all

i'd expect some messages about the drivers being loaded

more like this

[ 0.471820] virtio-pci 0000:00:03.0: irq 40 for MSI/MSI-X
[ 0.471822] alloc irq_desc for 41 on node -1

I noticed that aswell. The virtio drivers don't complain but they also don't record anything in dmesg...

I have looked into my Debian VM and lo and behold, it comes with 9p and virtio drivers built in.

  • The command "mount -t 9p -o trans=virtio <mount_tag> </local/path>" just works out of the box
  • "lsmod | grep 'virtio\|9p'": virtio_console, virtio_balloon, virtio_net, virtio_pci, virtio_ring, virtio, 9pnet_virtio, 9pnet, net_failover (dependency of virtio_net)
  • "dmesg | grep 'virtio\|9p'": virtio_net virtio3 enp4s0: renamed from eth0, 9pnet: Installing 9p2000 support
  • virtio3 resides in /sys/bus/virtio/drivers/virtio_net

So the drivers leave no dmesg on Debian aswell when being loaded, only a message that a device has been renamed.

I'm going to contact the guys on here that have Xpenology running inside docker because they seem to have figured 9p support out. Maybe they have an idea how to get it working. But I'm not too confident that 9p will solve my issues anyways (PhotoStation can't be forced to index pictures on network shares) as it's just another way of mounting a remote share that doesn't seem too much different from CIFS or NFS...

even if xpenology can mount 9p I believe that photostation can not show pictures with network protocol.

Otherwise you can try Moments app. I've mouted shared folder via cifs (network protocol) and then mergerfs (fuse). Moments can index pictures but when the mountpoint is not avaiable then reindex the library;  the missing pictures are still avaiable (could not automatically deleted)

I have some tests of 9p but it did not work in xpenology ds918+

No, I need PhotoStation.

I moved away from Synology because I want to consolidate all devices into one tower and I found the solution in UnRAID. Have a Win 10 gaming VM set up and wanted to do all other tasks with plugins or docker containers. Sadly after half a year of searching for a picture hosting app I found that there are plenty of gallery apps and a lot of them support tagging pictures but they shy away from modifying the actual files by storing tags in metadata. Instead they have a proprietary database where tags are stored so if I ever need to switch gallery apps for whatever reason the tags will be lost.

Solutions that support storing tags in metadata are professional digital asset management ssytems that are  not free/cheap and/or dont have a simple UI that is just a gallery.

PhotoStation sits right in the middle: simple, intuitive UI that can be just a gallery and at the same time it modifys/searches metadata of the files so the tags and other information can stay with the files.

Sadly PhotoStation has a hard time indexing directorys outside of /volume*/photo (but it can be done with some shell trickery) and it absolutely shits the bed (on purpose?) when told to index a network share (CIFS/NFS). I have delved quite deep and I found that AppArmor denies it access to network shares but even disabling AppArmor doesn't improve it... It just throws errors when trying to write to the share and google doesn't come up with a solution. Thats even when the shares are explicitely mounted with root access. It's not that PS doesn't have a graceful way of handling missing pictures. Removing pictures or mounting a different dir on top of /volume*/photo will just display a grey symbol for missing pictures. Would be totally fine if this happened with missing network shares aswell.

9p used to work in DSM 6.1.x apparently but broke with 6.2. :(

I have a NUC with mini PCIe ASM1061, but this card not reconized with all tested extra drivers version:

1st boot a normal live linux and check with "lspci -k" if the additional device is found  and if the ahci driver ist used

its device id should be 1B21:0611

you should see that device id in your dsm's dmesg log, if its not there then a diver cant work

Ok thanks, I don't show the card with lspci -k and clonezilla doesn't show my ASM1061, I think the card is bad, I bought here:

i did this last week and a user tested it, just forgot to go on and publish it

look in the 1st post, i changed the text and link (now u3 mod2 for 918+)

its also possible that the slot is limited to a certain type of card, look in the manual (might be not that prominent to see) and maybe try to find some more info about people who tried to extend y this slot with other cards then network/wifi

could you be more specific about the hardware? i did not found a intel nuc system with a N3150 cpu

The PCI and msata slot is inverted on picture ! the card need a harddisk connected to show up. It's work now !

can you confirm? Does xpenology 3615xs 1.03b work in proxmox at 10gb network speed via virtio drivers?

no, i'm not using kvm/proxmox and dont test this and i have not seen a positive feedback of people loading the modules manually in integrated in the current releases of the extra.lzma

(you can open the extra.lzma with 7zip and extract the virtio modules to test them)

Hello everyone, I need help, I'm already starting to go a little crazy ...

I have the following configuration:

Gigabyte GA-965P-DQ6

Marvell Yukon 88E8053 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet (on motherboard)

Dual Controller of the Realtek PCIe GbE family (8168F) Although I bought it supposedly to be 8111G or 8111H

Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 - 2.13 GHz

4 GB RAM

6 SATA II ports

2 SATA II Gygabyte ports

Only modifying USB VID and PID can I install DS3617xs without problems with jun's loader 1.03b

When I try to install DS918 + with jun's loader 1.04b and extra.lzma / extra2.lzma for loader 1.04b ds918 + DSM 6.2.3 v0.13.3 it is impossible to do so. It does not assign ip and it does not appear and I cannot access its web interface. I have also tried without extra v0.13.3

I have modified vid and pid, mac1 and mac2 (always RTL 8168F), only mac1, sataportmap = 62.

One thing that I have noticed is while ds3617 load, the usb keyboard and mouse is activated on boot, it turns off for a few seconds and then it is activated again and everything works correctly, however, on 918+ once the usb keyboard is turned off it does not turn on again.

I would like to use ds918 + because I can use Synology's SHR RAID

Any help? Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks in advance.

 driver liste here

https://xpenology.com/forum/topic/12859-driver-extension-jun-103a2dsm62x-for-ds918/

say's its sky2.ko as driver, alle the drivers are still there in the current versions of extra.lzma for 6.2.3

realtek 8111(8168 is also no problem

2nd controller beside chipsets sata is JMB36X and thats supposed to be ahci (should not be set to raid mode)

chipset also needs to be set to ahci (no raid, no ide)

cpu is no problem but you have to use 1.03b 3615 or 3617, 1.04b 918+ need at least 4th gen haswell cpu

its documented her in the tutorial section

https://xpenology.com/forum/topic/13333-tutorialreference-6x-loaders-and-platforms/

you did not read the faq?

https://xpenology.com/forum/topic/9394-installation-faq/?do=findComment&comment=81094

so shr and 3615/17 is no problem

even if that would be reset on a update it would still be working, only effect without the setting is that you cant create a shr, under the surface its working all the time and support is prsent, just switched off in gui by default

so you are more or less done installing, just use the 3617 you have and change synoinfo.conf after installing (if a volume was already created just delete it and create ne one with shr)

as synology just released the kernel source for 6.2.3 i'm back on square one with the new drivers, i will need to reconfigure the build environment, test it and redo some additional kernel patches for certain hardware (alx "killer" nic's, mvsas)

Is this going to get you a chance to see if the 8125b drivers will compile for the 3617xs? If so, I am standing by to test as needed.
