NEW DSM 5.1-5004 AVAILABLE !!

Recommended Posts

I managed to get the beta 5.1 installed WITH volume1 on a Virtualbox VM, but it only worked just once - I haven't been able to repeat it with either the Beta or the final dsm5.1. See

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4042&start=30#p24602

I am at a loss to understand why I couldn't repeat the install.

As I understand it, all we can do is wait for synology to release the gpl.

can i install xpenology (any version) on a Hp gen8?

n54l can take 6 drives but i think that Hp gen8 can only take up to 5 discs because there isn't eSATA on the back of Hp gen8.. only USB ports.. am i missing something?

Yes, is possible.

I got a HP Gen 8 microserver upgraded with a XEON processor and 16 Gb ram ... And have a hyper V environment with DSM 5.0 running.

Is it possible to have six drives on a Gen8 case like n54l on the ODD space? does have 6 Sata connection?

Guys, I kindly ask you to stick to the Topic: DSM 5.1.

Yes, I really. I do not ask you to buy me a new machine I just have two powerful NASes (already with dsm 5.1 update 2) and I beg you to help me buy a third, which I actually do not need. if $ 5-10 offend you, I not urge you to pay. and I am grateful to everyone who has helped the project. still needed a little more than half.

I'm sorry if I offended someone.

Good works guys, chasing away one of the few who has bypassed securities for past versions of DSM. His work predates XPEnology, and is probably one of the reasons this site even exists. I've personally used his Qnology releases on my intel based systems long before XPEnology even existed http://forum.qnap.com/viewtopic.php?f=9 ... it=qnology

If you don't want to donate, then just don't and STFU. Don't complain and cry on forum posts, because probably you have nothing to offer the community yourself.

You're right. Few people know me and my work. I'll stop this sh*t.

All donations will be refunded. Thank you, once again sorry.

Maybe You or sancome or gnoboot helps, but I'm quit.

Damn man, I know your work. It was your work on Qnology that originally brought me here. Really hope you decide to stick around. There are those of us that both know of and respect the work you've done. I wouldn't have XPEnology running on my QNAP without your guidance.

I think we also lost a fairly important link in all the post deletions. This is the link to Vortex's work related to getting DSM 5.1 on Thecus: http://forum.thecus.com/viewtopic.php?f=74&t=8448

Because probably you have nothing to offer the community yourself.

I think I do enough for this community running a website (see sig) with tutorials and what not. It's in my own interest that I'd like to continue this.

So, if this comment was towards me, I think it's uncalled for.

The only thing I like to see is this community a bit more stable. I have said it before and will say it again. In the say what, 6 months, we had 3 people making boot images and none of them are here! Things come to a halt. Which is a shame I think. So I'm glad Vortex is helping out.

I've sent Vortex a message if he could help etc. So, just that I make a comment on some donation thing, doesn't mean I disapprove. It was a general comment.

So, enough about donations. Let's focus on the thing at hand, making a boot image for 5.1.

Vortex, sorry if my comment put you over the edge, that is not my intention. I would like to see your work.

My comment wasn't totally directed at you, more so someone who's posts seem to have disappeared. It's good that someone makes easy guides for noobs who don't want to try to learn how to do the easy things themselves (editing grub menus, converting .imgs to ISOs and VDMKs), but without the people who spend tons of time reverse-engineering DSM none of that stuff would be useful. And I don't mean to come off as insulting to what you do.

Vortex wanted to get a system that is used very commonly among those in this community, so he had something to work with so he can try to release modded images. He doesn't really work with virtual machines (at least from what I've read following his work all these years). Personally I'm not interested in that HP machine, since I like my virtual machines.... but I don't want people, who want everything handed to them, pissing off the few people that are left who reverse-engineer and/or release boot images, ect. It's bad enough that gnoboot disappeared, we don't need vortex disappearing too - as I'm sure he'd have helped whoever continues gnoboot/nanoboot's work in some way.

First off, please don't leave Vortex, we all appreciate your work. Many are frustrated at the idea that this project may become a dead end, and that frustration is appearing in various posts.

Is there any way we can put pressure on Synology to release the GPL? I suppose that if you haven't purchased a DSM5.1 capable device from them, then they haven't broken a contract with you, and if you haven't contributed to the Linux code base, then they haven't broken a copyright there either. Does anyone know how to go about getting them to act? I had a look and couldn't find any concrete information about how to bring a complaint.

I did find a few references from people providing packages for synology, and they are apparently not getting the code either.

As far as I understand it someone who has proof of purchase of a DSM5.1 capable machine would have to ask them via email for a copy of the gpl code.

Maybe Synology are going to create a situation where an open source clone/fork project kicks off if they attempt to lock down the code base. It could make a viable crowd source project for a team with the right talents. Lots of expenology users want to run custom hardware builds which synology don't cater for. The bulk of DSM is open source so it's a little bit rich for them to make access to the code difficult. Even the synology hybrid raid is based on open source code. Personally I don't really use any of the synology frontend applications and the utilities I do use could be replaced with other projects if the system was based on an open core.

Lets say a team of developers decided to start a Syno DSM killer with RAID-Z that could be run on a wide range of hardware synology will lose a huge percentage of their market, along with most of the other dedicated NAS hardware manufactures. Case manufactures will soon produce some nice dedicated nas solutions as soon as the demand is there. There's a big market out there waiting to be tapped into for a flexible DSM equivalent. That market is going to be a growth area as it becomes less of a specialist piece of hardware. Corporates that buy multiple units could make massive savings if they could use off the shelf components.

What would people pay/donate for an equivalent DSM?

Could we manage to fund our own open source project and do we have developers with the time and skills within the community?

I've been there too... Some people doesn't really appreciate our effort for this community. All they want is free stuff and complain.

Poechi I also wrote a little guide and I did not expect any subsidy for it but I do not want to be dependent on one or two people so move to qts - has to offer little more than dsm for now

Qts can run outside hardware qnap's?

so in the 5 pages of comments i take it nobody was successful in getting this to work on any hardware. That is kind of scary to think about it, since nobody has this working and its been a good couple of weeks or so. I wonder if by this year in 2014 will it be possible to run 5.1 or have the xpenology box not be accessible from the internet.

Why? As mentioned, Synology should release toolchain and sources under GPL. Than there is more possibility to get 5.1 running. Till that time, you can still use 4528 (update 2) and is accessible through internet. It's just that you or not on the latest DSM release.

Why? Im curious is there anyone thats successfully got 5.1 to work on dissimilar hardware?. After reading around I believe vortex might have. i got bigger issues right now like trying to make this 4tb drive i got to play nice.. the reason i said leaving the system not online is due to the threat of shellshock. aside from that im already on 5.0 with the thanks of others posted on the forum. i use 4528 update 2 however not sure how secure that is. for now id be a happy camper if i can get my damn system to get out of degraded mode with a 4tb in after doing a repair.

I have been trying to get dsm51 to work since the beta, without luck (I once managed to get a 5.1 VM with a volume, but haven't been able to repeat it). I have tried various changes to synoinfo.conf in /etc & /etc.defaults, as well as modifying startup scripts, and generating mtab, fstab, and mdadm.conf before and during the install. As far as I can tell the problem is that something goes wrong in the handover from the boot bzImage and the synology 5.1 kernel bzImage. Device detection gets messed up and the devices/partitions from which the volume should be build by mdadm are no longer there so it bombs.

I don't think it is the install procedure itself - if you login as root on the console during the install (the password is calculated from the date see: http://codepad.org/naljB5Ze) you will find that the 3 md devices are working fine all through the install, the problem only appears on the reboot.

Even after the reboot, the _contents_ of the volume are undamaged - if you boot the vm to a different linux distro you can assemble the array and will find all the data still intact.

This indicates to me that the volume problem boils down to device detection during the boot process and only that.

The apparmor error is IMHO a red herring, you can turn it off in synoinfo.conf.

In my opionion it seems that all we can do is wait for the release of the dsm51, only then can a correct bzImage be compiled for the boot image so that device detection works.

I just used the support request from my ds411j to send the following support request:

"I see that the DSM5.1 is not yet posted on http://sourceforge.net/projects/dsgpl/files/ Can you please inform me of when the dsm5.1 toolchains etc will be posted, or point me to an alternative location where I can download them?"

It might help if everyone else who has a real synology box sent the same or a similar request.

Hi,

that argument is not entirely correct.

assuming that dsm software include gpl code (gnu gpl license), synology is obliged to publish source code and to distribute such code under the terms od gnu gpl license to EVERYONE. Not only to person, who had purchased a DSM from synology. This rules applies not only to orginal code but also to the code modified by synology (as well as work based on a gnu-gpl program) .

generally there are two ways to meet this requirement:

1. accompany program distributed in executable form with the complete source code (i.e offering access to copy the source code from the same place as executable form program)

2. accompany it with a written offer, valid for at least three years, to give any third party (..) source code,

details are in point 3 gnu gpl license (http://www.gnu.org/licenses/old-licenses/gpl-2.0.txt -I'm not sure on which version od gnu gpl is distributed DSM).

if synlogy does not meet these requirements, they violate the terms of gpl license and they are not allowed to use this program (work based on program -DSM) (p. 4 gnu gpl license)

Martin
