Synology release a new update today (or at least I was reminded by my setup).

Release Notes:

Version : 5.0-4528

(2014/10/22)

What’s New

This hotfix includes all bug fixes as well as security fixes in the previously released critical updates since DSM 5.0-4458.

This hotfix will remove the current known malware on your Synology NAS.

Fixed Issues

Fixed two Linux kernel vulnerabilities that could allow local users to cause a denial of service resulting in uncontrolled recursion or unkillable mount process (CVE-2014-5471 and CVE-2014-5472).

Fixed one Linux kernel vulnerability that could allow local users to cause a denial of service or possibly gain privileges via a crafted application that triggers a zero count (CVE-2014-0205).

Fixed one Linux kernel vulnerability that could allow man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof servers and obtain sensitive information via a crafted certificate (CVE-2014-6657).

Fixed one SNMP vulnerability where the improper validation of input could allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CVE-2014-2284).

Implemented minor fixes related to the ShellShock Bash vulnerabilities previously addressed in DSM 4493-05 updates (Bash 4.2-51, 4.2-52, and 4.2-53).

Anyone already tried updating to this version? Or can some test it on a test VM? Currently I'm running DSM5.0-4493-7.

It looks like you need to upgrade your setup. I can't seem to find any bromolow patch.

I'm testing right know.

So after a clean install or from a upgrade 4493-7 I got following message in a pop-up shortly after logging on:

You are not permitted to use this service.

Then after clicking 'OK' it logs me out of DSM.

So, I think Synology has implemented some security checks.

Let's troubleshoot

Boot images are on my site. I think it's best to use them for testing only till everything is sorted.

strange. i installed 5.0-4528 on virtualbox VM few times without problems, also on ESXi 5.1. it was upgraded from 5.0-4493 and clean install

Since i'm the creator of the Single HDD image he is referring to i have just helped him with his issue on my own website, If any one else on this forum is using the same image then please read the posts in this thread for help on updating by changing the text.

Thanks

How do you access the partition with grub ?

If the Virtual Diskstation is booted ... you have only access via winscp to the Synology structure ... no the startup disk one

i had a ubuntu system on my vm, so i mount the virtual disk to the ubuntu then edit it.
