Hello everyone,

I installed Xpenology on a USB key but i have a HDD (40gb) which is useless for me.

I'd like to know if it's safer to install Xpenology on a HDD or on a USB key ?

Second question : how can i switch between these two system without losing my data and my configuration in my administration panel ?

I mean, if i install nanoboot on my HDD, do i need to install again DSM or i just have to plugin my HDD and everything will work fine ?

Thank you !

The Synology DSM installs on each of the installed hard drives anyway, the USB key is just for the boot loader so that you can boot Synology DSM on non Synology hardware. Just use the USB drive, if it fails, install the boot loader again and you're good to go as all the actual information for the DSM is on your hard drive/s.

I'm running DSM under Esxi on a HP N54L. I followed some guides and now my drive setup looks like this.

HD 1, virtual disk with the Boot loader

HD 2, 16GB virtual disk. This is the drive i first installed DSM on to try it out.

HD 3, RDM mapped

HD 4, RDM mapped

HD 5, RDM mapped

HD 6, RDM mapped

The RDM mapped is all mounted as one volume (SHR)

The Synology DSM installs on each of the installed hard drives anyway...

Does this mean HD2 is not needed to run DSM and I can just delete this drive?
