segator Posted October 12, 2014 #1 Posted October 12, 2014 Hi, I have n54l microserver, and i'm out of space on my SHR RAID, I'm thinking to expand the file storage is it possible to expand SHR Raid with the esata port that I have? connecting the esata enclosure(with port multiplier)? esata enclosure like http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009EM ... ajaisma-20 Sorry for my bad english!
berwhale Posted October 13, 2014 #2 Posted October 13, 2014 The eSATA port on the N54L doesn't support port multiplication. I don't think anyone has found a PCI-e SATA card with port multiplication that works reliably with DSM (happy to be corrected!). By the way, you can easily fit two 3.5" drives in the ODD bay, four if you try hard enough.
SergeS Posted October 13, 2014 #3 Posted October 13, 2014 By the way, you can easily fit two 3.5" drives in the ODD bay, four if you try hard enough. Four!!! I would like to see it ! Or what do you mean by "hard enough"?
segator Posted October 13, 2014 Author #4 Posted October 13, 2014 Hey, N54L support port multiplication(With Custom bios), don't know if working on DSM Xpenology but on Windows and OpenMediaVault work's perfect(Tested) but how can I add two 3,5 drivers on ODD bay, can you extend 1 sata to x2 sata? Thanks!
berwhale Posted October 15, 2014 #5 Posted October 15, 2014 1. You need the custom BIOS to allow internal SATA/eSATA to run in SATA mode. 2. You need a 2x 3.5" to 5.25" adapter (I used one similar to this: http://www.frozencpu.com/products/15856 ... 34c273s852) 3. Run an eSata to SATA cable from the back of the server, through a PCI blanking plate to the 2nd drive in the ODD bay.
segator Posted October 17, 2014 Author #6 Posted October 17, 2014 Thanks for the info Esata port is detected as internal port on DSM? Can I use HDD on esata port to expand my internal SHR Raid? anybody knows if I can connect a Esata to 4xSata(Port Multiplier)?
djbills Posted October 17, 2014 #7 Posted October 17, 2014 The bios and hardware will support a port multiplier on the eSata but the DSM does not. Synology is blocking us on that one. I am trying to get the same thing running and I'm going to try a USB to esata adapter ($30 on amazon?) that supports port multiplication and I'll see if that will bootleg support for my 4 bay esata enclosure with xpenology and let it see all 4 drives. Will report back in a week or 2, haven't had time to mess with it yet.

I Think with this config you can see and use the HDD but cannot create SHR or Expand with existing Raid's, only mount and backup HDD. I Wait for your news
