In regards to what version of DSM you can run, without adding extra drivers or another NIC,

the DSM 6.1.7-15284 Update 3 (DS3615xs, using Jun's bootloader v1.02b is a safe choise.

If this is your first "meeting" with XPEnology, that would be the way to go.

If you have a compatible NIC to install, or want to try out some of the new drivers

read up on this topic extra.lzma/extra2.lzma before trying out DSM 6.2.x

Seeing as some use 10TB drives on their N54L, that is the same server with a better CPU,

you won't be blocked by any HDD drive size limitation.

Most, if i not all(?) info can be found by searching the forum, and ask if you get stuck :-)

Thanks, I might have to give it a go - do you have a link for the DSM 6.1.7-15284 Update 3 process?

Based on a previous post on how to update, from 6.1.x to 6.2.x ,

this would give you an roughly guide on how to install my primary choice of XPE on the G7 Microserver:

1 - Download Jun's Loader v1.02b DS3615xs (follow the links posted in this forum!)

2 - Prepare a (new) USB stick (there is a nice tool put together by Jensmander you could use)

3 - Find your vid/pid/mac/serialnr.

4 - Edit the grub.cfg in your synoboot.img

5- Write synoboot.img to your new USB stick

6 - Download DSM_DS3615xs_15284.pat.pat to do a local install.

7 - Shutdown your G7 Microserver (if powered on) replace any old USB stick with the one you just made.

8 - Power on your G7 Microserver, enter BIOS, disable the C1e option. Set all SATA ports as ACHI

9 - Reboot your NAS, find it using Syno Assistent, connect and install (or update) using the local copy of the .PAT file you downloaded.

10 - Something, something missing, something forgotten, something to be added later ...

11 - Something, something missing, something forgotten, something to be added later ...

12 - Disable DSM automatic updates Control Panel > Update & Restore > Update settings(to avoid bricking your box if an update is not compatible with the loader.)
13 - While in Update & Restore > Update settings, select "Important updates" only

14 - From Control Panel > Update & Restore > DSM Update, do a manual update, this should give you the choice to install "Update 3"

15 - Something, something missing, something forgotten, something to be added later ...

How many drives will you be using? If you want to use all 6 SATA ports, the first thing to think of is:

What BIOS version are you using, has it ever been updated, or replaced with a "modified" BIOS?
