Volume crashed, not whole system is read-ony!

Recommended Posts

I have a 9-drive Xpenology setup with 2 volumes. 1 of the drives failed in volume 3. Thankfully this was the a 2-disk SHR setup. The issue is I was using Peta space, and so my shared folders are spread across the 2 volumes. Now the entire system is read-only. I want to try and copy the data from volume 3 to volume 1, so I can remove volume 3 completely.

Any ideas?

So....

If you have only 2 volumes, then how can you get a drive failure on the non-existing Volume 3 :35_thinking:

btw:

Are the 9 drives mentioned being used in the N54L mentioned in your signature?

If so, how are they connected?

Sorry, I should have mentioned that the volumes are called "volume 1" and "volume 3". I was actually able to sort of resolve my issue by recovering the data using the Linux method described on the synology support pages and rebuild the volumes.

No, my N54L has been gone a while now, this in in 2x Gen8 Microservers, using the onboard RAID controller for drives 1-5 (4x 4TB WD Red, 1x 960GB Crucial SSD cache drive) and an HP PCIE RAID card for drives 6-9 (using the SAS connector of the 2nd server to connect to the RAID card). I also have a 250GB SSD in the 2nd server so I can still use it as a PC.

I am in the process of getting rid of all of this and replacing it with a custom built machine that will hold all 9 drives (and have space for a couple of extras)

that sound pretty "adventurous", what hp controller is this?

so you use the backplane's sas connector of the 2nd unit to connect to the sas controller of the 1st unit (that is running dsm)?

250GB ssd is used on internat sata of 2nd unit and uses the mainboard (without the backplane)

there are SAS housings for cases like this

https://www.silverstonetek.com/product.php?pid=423&bno=74&tb=32&area=en

(imho there are not much affordable choices when it hast to be a sas enclosure)

also depending on what kind of build you plan something like this can be useful (there are different brands for a thing like this)

yes, adventurous. It took a little while to get right, but it has been running solid for almost 2 years now.

Yes, backplane connector connects to a SAS 8087 to 8088 converter that mounts in one of the free slots. This then has an SAS cable running from Server2 to Server1 and connects directly to the RAID Card (LSI SAS9220-8I, not an HP card as I thought). So in essence, Server1 uses the B120i and the LSI card and the SATA port to give it the 9 drives. Server2 only uses the SATA port.

going to order https://antec.com/product/case/vsk4000e-u3.php. I can get 4 drives in there initially, plus 1 of the SSDs. I am hoping a friend of mine is going to make me some sort of drive cage to fill the 5.25" bays so I can house another 5 drives in there. Probably going to use an i5 CPU with 16GB RAM and I'll get a new RAID card as well.

if possible dont use mini-itx board, use something with more pcie slots so you can extend for controller or 10G nic (pcie 4x/8x)

think about using a 8 port ahci controller, ahci does not need any additional drivers to run dsm, less dependencies

i found 2 good looking candidates

if there are enough pcie slots then also 2x4port controller might be a option

Will probably go with something like http://www.biostar-usa.com/app/en-us/mb/introduction.php?S_ID=917

I may be able to get my hands on a Dell H310 SAS card and flash it to IT mode, then I can use SAS to SATA adapters and run maybe another 8 drives

if you block the 16x pcie slot with the controller you cant have aother 4x card for 10G network or another 4x storage controller

i used this one

https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/B360M-HD3-rev-10

more or less the same

thats the same as the one you already have, you will depend on a working mpt2sas/mpt3sas driver and atm its a little unclear how scsi/sas added drivers will develop, there are present/working for 6.2.2 now (mpt2sas/mpt3sys) but on long term a ahci solution is a safe choice as it will work with dsm ootb as synology uses ahci for there own boxes, mpt drivers are only ootb supported on some units, mainly business units

you might read about "native" drivers here
