Possible to turn RS812 to an expansion unit and use XPEnology to connect?

Question

Hi All,

I would like to build out a computer that would essentially run XPEnology. I currently have a RS812. If I'm able to find a mother board that supports eSata, is it possible to turn the RS812 into an "expansion" unit?

I'm not sure how the RX410s work or what operating system it's running to make it run as an "expansion" unit... Anyone has any insights?

Thanks.

I doubt that you can use a Rackstation as an expansion device. The expansion units have different boards inside the case which have nothing to do with the normal mainboards. You can think about iSCSI/LUNs in combination of Xpenology <> RS812.

no its just a normal  (older) computer with just 4 sata ports, pretty much the same as a normal 4bay nas just as 19" version

only thing you could do is kick out the original board, build in something more powerful and use the 4 hot swap bays as normal drives

2nd option - extremely ineffective - throw out the board, aggregate the for bay's with a sas cable to a external sas connector and connect this 4bay sas chassis to a xpenology system with a sas controller with external port - more of a mind play, ineffective/expensive
