HP Microserver N54L

Hi Guys,

I am really considering purchasing the above server over a Asustor nas bay, but power consumption is putting me off.

Just wanted to know if scheduled shutdown and start ups work with the latest version of Xpenology and if yes is it pre-installed or would have have to add it myself?

Also if I use 2 red drives will they power down if I use in raid 1?

Would appreciate any advice.

Many thanks...

Hi and welcome to the forum,

I'm using the N54L, but for now only with one drive. A WD red of 3TB. It is configured as a SHR. In the control panel the option is set to spin down the HDD which it does according to the logs.

Spin-down is set to 10 minutes inactivity.

As you can see the system will do something every 40 minutes or so. Maybe it is my sickbeard running in the background. I still need to finetune this.

Reckon putting the drive in RAID1 will give a similar output. As long as there is no IO, the disks will go into hybernation.

What's the difference in power consumption between the N54L and an AsusStor?

Let's assume it's 50W (I think it will actually be considerably less) and do a power calculation for the UK...

50w x 24 hours x 30 days per month = 36kWh per month.

I pay around 12p per kWh for electricity, so 36kWh = £4.32 per month to run.

N54L can currently be purchased for £130 from eBuyer.

4 bay AsusStor (ASUSTOR AS-204T) is around £270.

So purchase price differential is £140. £140 divided by £4.32 = 32.4 months = 2 years and 8 months before the lower power consumption gets you any benefit.
