SergeS Posted May 20, 2014 Share #1 Posted May 20, 2014 1) I am lost in Xpenology versions, stuck with Trantor 4.3-3810, and do not knot what version to update to… It would be nice to have some combined table indicating the differences between Trantor vs. Gnoboot vs. Nanoboot, and including information about compatible hardware, last release, stability issues (known problem), power button and buzzer support, mac-addresses and push-notification issues, etc. Also, it will be very useful to mention information about migration between these versions, as far as I know there is some chance to loose data in some combination of migration. Are there anybody who test two or more versions, could you, please, share this vital information with everybody? 2) In my specific situation I have HP N54l with, as I’ve mentioned above, Trantor DSM4.3-3810 with approx. 5 Tb of data. I would like to update to dsm 5, but I am not really ready to risk my data. Also I would like to save all my settings related to around 20 users and multiple shared folders, I don’t want to manually assign rights for all that stuff. I do have some extra storage for full transfer of all data and make clear installation, but it will take so much time, and, that is why, I have considered this option as a last resort. Any suggestions how to update to dsm5 with minimum risk for data? But my main question is what version to update to… Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Dipper315 Posted May 20, 2014 Share #2 Posted May 20, 2014 Try Gnoboot, I updated from DSM 4.3 build 3810++ (repack v1.0) to DSM 5.0-4458 update 2 without hiccups. Only thing you loose is the folders permissions. Follow the guides instruction and prepare another drive for gnoboot Boot loader When you hit "This drive's data might be erased", turn off the server and plug back your old trantor bootloader and reboot. Nanoboot is quite new at this point, it is NOT based on DS3612xs. Trantor and some other member are testing it out. Data is OK, seems like everything working fine, most settings are ok, but users rights have been lost, manually have to set it again. backup configuration before migration and restoring it after migration - not working, dsm 5 does not accept dss-file, hello to Synology . No warranties I am not giving specific links, easy to find it on the forum, i am giving exact file-names. If you will have problems finding files and/or software i have mentioned below- let me know, i have saved all that stuff locally on my pc, i will share. Tested on HP N54L. 1. Make backup of your data on Xpenology. 1.5 Write down your users rights for your shared folders, you will lost it during following migration. 2. Make sure backup is OK. 2.5 Shutdown Xpenology . 3. Download file NanoBoot-5.0.2.4-fat.img. 4. Using Win32DiskImager and NanoBoot-5.0.2.4-fat.img, prepare bootable USB flash-drive. I have used the other one, not the same as for DSM 4.3-3810 (trantor), but it is optional. 5. Insert newly prepared bootable USB flash-drive to the Xpenology server instead of DSM 4.3-3810 (trantor) bootable drive. 6. Powerup Xpenology with new USB drive, wait few minutes. 7. Using Synology Assistant (or web-browser, if you know IP) - install DSM_DS3612xs_4482.pat from Synology web-site in migration mode! 8. Manually restore users rights from your records.
