Vortex Posted April 29, 2014 Share #56 Posted April 29, 2014 Weird, log is not it? Note that this log file was encrypted, and his filname is carefully obfuscated. I would not be surprised if this log is transmitted to Synology.
Schnapps Posted April 29, 2014 Share #57 Posted April 29, 2014 Hmmm, Could be but Elvis can still be alive also ). Let's not go to much into conspiracy theories. The fact is that Syno knows about XPeno and only they know what strategy they have in regards to this community. They could destroy XPeno or they can make it flourish and turn it into their mega beta test environment (Personal opinion) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
666 Posted April 29, 2014 Share #58 Posted April 29, 2014 I just cannot find the dsm.data in my genuine Syno device running 4482.
Vortex Posted April 29, 2014 Share #59 Posted April 29, 2014 dsm.dat is a protection check log. On genuine synology it is not created.
Vivian Posted April 29, 2014 Share #60 Posted April 29, 2014 only thanks xpenology I bought 2 synology boxes. Without Xpenology I would have bought qnap.
stelle007 Posted April 29, 2014 Share #61 Posted April 29, 2014 Might be stupid question, but could the dsm.dat file be made write protected, without it being rejected? That way it would always be empty.
almstsobur Posted April 29, 2014 Share #62 Posted April 29, 2014 I'm really not sure why some of you are freaking out over security issues. First, any device like this should be behind a firewall, do you really have Samba shares or log-ins open to a public facing interface? Second, I can't imagine using XPEnology in a production environment, if you are .. shame on you, I hope you get fired. Secure your network and XPEnology device properly, only open ports needed too and from locations accessed and you should have no security concerns. I highly doubt your wife is going to exploit CVE-2013-4496 to get a look at your porn collection. Relax, -Almstsobur
Schnapps Posted April 30, 2014 Share #63 Posted April 30, 2014 I always say the same thing. If you will need it for real important shit(data) buy the goddamn original Syno. Me for example, I have it as a "productive NAS for home". Am I doing the right thing? ) PS: I already recommended at work to buy some big DiskStations that should provide rather cheap but large storage spaces in remote locations where a SAN is not the option due to lots of reasons. The best choice! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
yaqushi Posted April 30, 2014 Share #64 Posted April 30, 2014 Unfortunately most Synology solutions are underpowered in CPU for plex transcoding. The 3612 might do the job (price tag of 3k), but even that is borderline. If they would only offer smth with more power in the consumer field. nsfw Posted April 30, 2014 Share #73 Posted April 30, 2014 Yes, but it is more strict now. what check does it do to know if its real or not? could a pci table file be changed to trick it into thinking it’s a real synology?
almstsobur Posted May 1, 2014 Share #74 Posted May 1, 2014 I'm not sure if anyone has tested to see if maybe it is just a serial number check? I own a Synology NAS, and I gave my ESXI Xpenology the SN of my offline real NAS and the MAC of my offline real NAS, and it seems like features such as the buildt in dynamic DNS etc all work for me.
