Silver Fang Posted April 15, 2019 Share #1 Posted April 15, 2019 Hi, (please move this thread if its in wrong forum) I want a NAS that is powerful to transcode .mkv for one user and can fit one WD RED 4TB. Synology DiskStation DS218+ is having Intel Celeron J3355, so I know it needs more CPU than that. Will this motherboard with Intel Celeron J4105 works with XPEnology? ASRock J4105-ITX https://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/J4105-ITX/#Overview If the motherboard works, what 8GB memory works for XPEnology (I know it must be compatible with the motherboard)? I dont need much features from the NAS, only to store pictures (jpeg) and .mkv movies (from GoPro and anime, max 2GB per file). Want to be able to access the NAS from outside of my home on my phone/iPad/laptop. Thanks in advance.
Prinz_Protato Posted April 15, 2019 Share #2 Posted April 15, 2019 (edited) That motherboard and CPU will work fine. - It should work with Jun's modloader 1.04b which emulates a DS918 - so Hardware encoding for the CPU will work great. Technically any ram should work, looks like the motherboard uses SO-DIMM (laptop) RAM. You can just boot the loader off a USB and have the SATA ports (there are 4 of them) for the HDD's Edited April 15, 2019 by Prinz_Protato
Silver Fang Posted April 15, 2019 Author Share #3 Posted April 15, 2019 Will the turbo of the CPU work, from 1.5GHz to 2.5GHz? Is one 8GB memory stick good enough or is 2x4GB better? Thinking to use this small case. What PSU is recommended? Chieftec Compact Series IX-01B Mini-ITX Thanks again
flyride Posted April 15, 2019 Share #4 Posted April 15, 2019 That board is having problems with 6.2.2 and we haven't figured out why yet. It works with 6.2.1 okay.

Chieftec Compact Series IX-01B Mini-ITX Thanks again I don't see why Turbo wouldn't work. 2x4gb is technically better as it'll be dual channel rather than single channel mode 15 minutes ago, flyride said: That board is having problems with 6.2.2 and we haven't figured out why yet. Silver Fang Posted April 17, 2019 Author Share #18 Posted April 17, 2019 Have now ordered: Case: Chieftec Compact Series IX-01B Mini-ITX PSU: Chieftec AC Power Adapter CDP-085ITX 85W Motherboard: ASRock J4105-ITX - Intel Gemini Lake - Intel Onboard CPU socket - DDR4 RAM - Mini-ITX Memory: Corsair Vengeance SO-DIMM DDR4 2400MHz 2x4GB (CMSX8GX4M2A2400C16) Hard drive: WD Red WD40EFRX - 64MB - 5400 RPM - 4TB Almost small as Synology DS218+ but more powerful and cheaper. Only fit one 3.5" hdd and power brick is outside the device, but fanless. Just need to check how to install XPEnology. Do I need to update BIOS for the motherboard if there is any newer version? Thanks in advance

Olegin Posted April 17, 2019 Share #21 Posted April 17, 2019 You can use this tuto. But when the DSM installation starts (j) use this pat file for manual installation.
Silver Fang Posted April 18, 2019 Author Share #22 Posted April 18, 2019 Do I need to have the USB-stick attached to the NAS all the time or is it only during installation of Xpenology? If I need it attached all the time, then I must buy a smaller one 🙂 Thanks in advance
Olegin Posted April 18, 2019 Share #23 Posted April 18, 2019 You need it in all the time when the xpen will boot. The best way buy a smaller one and forgot about it. 😉

Silver Fang Posted April 26, 2019 Author Share #25 Posted April 26, 2019 (edited) 3.5" hdd doesn't fit with the motherboard and case, the motherboards heatsink is too tall. 3.5" hdd is 2.61cm in height, but the space that can fit is 1.7cm, so I ordered a 2.5" hdd that is 1.5cm. Maybe not the best drive for NAS, but the only one that is 4TB. Case: Chieftec Compact Series IX-01B Mini-ITX PSU: Chieftec AC Power Adapter CDP-085ITX 85W Motherboard: ASRock J4105-ITX - Intel Gemini Lake - Intel Onboard CPU socket - DDR4 RAM - Mini-ITX Memory: Corsair Vengeance SO-DIMM DDR4 2400MHz 2x4GB (CMSX8GX4M2A2400C16) Hard drive: Seagate Barracuda ST4000LM024 128MB 4TB USB stick: SanDisk USB 3.1 Ultra Fit 16GB Edited April 26, 2019 by Silver Fang
