Hardware Review for New Build

Hello everyone!

 

I've been using Xpenology on baremetal for the past 3-4 years on an old pc (Q6600 with 4GB ram) and now I want to build a new NAS with a more acceptable power consumption and performance.

I use the NAS mostly for docker (Plex, cloud storage), backup, and possibly vm (at the moment this was not doable).

One of the main point of the new build is having HW decoding for 4K movies, so I need QSV (I have a plex pass).

 

These are my needs:

1. Compact system (m-ITX)
2. Low power consuption (TDP <35W for cpu)
3. 4K HW transcoding (QSV)
4. NVME cache 
5. 10 GbE (I have 10GbE internet at home xD)

 

I have two builds in mind: 

1. MB: Asrock H270M-ITX/ac                             (~112 USD)
   CPU: Intel Core i5-7400T                                 (~100 USD used)
    
2. MB: ASUS P10S-I                                              (~185 USD)
   CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1235L v5                          (~100 USD used)
    

All with:

• 16 GB RAM 2400MHz                                      (~100 USD)

• be quiet! Pure Power L8 300W                       (already own)

• 4x 4TB WD Red                                                 (already own)

• ASUS XG-C100C 10GbE network card          (~80 USD)

• Fractal Node 304                                              (~40 USD used)

• SAMSUNG 970 Evo Plus SSD M.2, 250GB   (~80 USD)

 

What do you guys think?

 

I've read some discussion on the actual possibility to use NVMe cache on baremetal with 6.2, so I'm considering switching to ESXi. 

The 10GbE seems to be working with v4.9 test extra.lzma.
