How to install DSM 5.0 4458 using gnoboot-me

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

I have a N54L with vga out but the TV I use only has hdmi AND I can't afford a converter.

I was told in another thread that if I changed the "hd0,0" in boot\grub, it would boot off the usb stick.

But I would have to changed it back or have another usb stick ready when it re-boots.

What I want to know is what do I changed the "hd0,0" to? and do I changed it in all the .list files ?

thanks.

Use advise from bottom of http://xpenology.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2152&p=10720&hilit=menu.lst#p10720

Thank you.

As I've got trantor's V5 beta installed and no screen I edit the grub config to look like

"kernel /zImage root=/dev/md0 ihd_num=1 netif_num=0 syno_hw_version=DS3612xs sn=B3JN00310 vga=0x370 loglevel=3"

then changed the "1" back to "0" when it reboots?

I guess you are totally on the woodway here

OK I mean you are barking up the wrong tree.

hd0,0 means frist device, first partition and is definetely right if the system boots from the stick.

to install you may edit the menu.lst like this:

default 1

timeout 0

fallback 0

On reboot during installation you may change this back to

default 0

timeout 0

fallback 0

vga= 0x370 is definetely wrong as there is no such video mode. Should be vga=0x307.

and if I am right netif_num=0 means no network so you will not see your system.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Hello,

I would like to test DSM 5.0 on my Vmware Esxi 5.5 environment.

I've been reading different threads but don't seems to find a step by step on how to do a clean install.

I would really appreciate if any of you can guide me trough the steps of installing DSM 5.0 using gnoboot-me as a virtual machine.

Thank you in advance,

Zeek

Hi,

Did you try this

PERFECT thank you for your help

For other N54L people I used two USB sticks and edited each on as above. Booted off the default 1 then changed the USB stick to the default 0

I have a "1" on the control panal but I can't see any update?

- Web station and photo station not working. The usergroup 'http' is not listed. Had to manually create the account in usergroups. Given the right permissions on web folder and web station started to work. Needed to re-install photo station.

Can you shed a little light on this? I just upgraded to gnoboot 5.0 and I can't get my photo station running. I tried creating "http" through the gui, and it said it was reserved. I found it in the user list via SSH, but I'm not sure what it needs access to.

Thanks

In my case as I mentioned, the usergroup 'http' was not present. So, I create the usergroup 'http' and then give the usergroup 'http' read/write access on the shared folder 'web'. Then start the web station service. After that photo station still not working correctly. Needed to re-install.

Biggest problem for me is MariaDB not working. So not upgrading yet to this release.

I went back through and reinstalled the PAT, and managed to get photo station working again. Broke some other stuff in the process, but I think i've gotten it all sorted out.

Thanks for the help.

Big thanks to gnoboot as well. So far this thing is rock solid, and I am finally able to passthrough my SAS controller to get Smart data.

Hi all.

I've read through this thread and others but can't find a solution.

It's taking about 5-10 minutes for the services to get up and running

also I have a "1" on the control panel icon and I can't find out why?

There is no update and I've checked what I know but it's still there. Any help would be great.

Thank again.

I fully agree with gnoboots way of working!

When you release something publicly you barely get any useful feedback.

bullcrap there's linux (why even publicly release that shit or firefox???).. there's tons of sourceforge software that i gladly participate feedback on bugs etc. im grateful for those that have taken their time ie trantor and stanza and a few others in replying and working on xpenology. I am ungrateful to selfish assholes that brag about shit. How their dick is as big as a missile, drive a Bugatti veyron and take shits in 24k gold toilets. I give respect to those that deserve it. Ive been on the net longer than 95% of people on this very exact site. They can suck my ungrateful dick!. lol

why even come on this forum and brag about how you got version 6 working then disappear, its like saying look i won the lottery fuck all you poor mother fuckers.

@CtrlAltDel, I've only just started playing with xpenology and immediately I've noticed how easy it was to use trantor's releases. Then, when I wanted to try out gnoboot, I had to jump through hoops just to get even an old release and then when I got it, it didn't work. I have spent more time trying to figure out how to get a non-working gnoboot release than I had to spend to get trantor's working releases. I will emulate trantor's way of contributing to the community as soon as I learn a thing or two about repacking DSM builds. A big thanks to all in this community who freely contribute their time and knowledge for the benefit of everyone.

Sorry for the late reply. Trantors packages have worked well for me. I can't comment on gnoboot and the hoops as I would never subject myself to begging for a password to a control freak. I can only commend you on your appreciation of Trantor's work ethic and willingness to emulate him.

I fully agree with gnoboots way of working!

When you release something publicly you barely get any useful feedback.

What a load of fallacious tosh! It's not very difficult to prove what a load of BS that statement is - open source whether free as in beer or freedom is prominently freely available to the community with out any hoops! In fact I can't think of a project that protects their source with passwords or questionnaires. If I came across one I would certainly not support the project. I an open community that would be like taking a sh1t in a public swimming pool - by endorsing such a negative mean spirited model of control.

If you force feedback you get much more of it. So the software can grow.

First of all 'force' generally results in achieving the opposite effect to that which was intended. People by nature resent force whether they openly display it or not. The quality of feedback would be questionable as a number of people may well react negatively without really openly displaying their resentment.

Do you really need people to point you to some major projects that prove beyond any doubt that that is another totally fallacious statement?

Mozilla projects, Joomla, Wordpress, the phpbb project which we are using right now, as well as all the linux projects and elements of the various stacks like php, Apache, MariaDB and phpmyadmin...blar blar blar. The bulk of synology DSM is built one open source/free software, even their raid system is built on freely available code/concepts! Synology lock the DSM down with hardware checks while the vast majority of the applications are freely available.

You have to ask for access once and get it.

And if suckers over at nas.cn would not dteal his work (it's against the spirit of open source not to give credit) he would not be forced to protect the files by PW

Are you saying that the same password is used for every release both major and minor releases? That's not the impression I get from reading this forum.

Humm hypocrisy on top of your previous fallacious statements..."(it's against the spirit of open source not to give credit)" it's against the spirit to password protect the code! No one forced anyone to implement a method of tracking and control, that's a choice and a tactic. An alternative approach would be to request a credit be included in the code base. As is generally required and expected!

Personally I wouldn't condone anyone that failed to give credit where it's due. It's also virtually impossible for anyone to achieve anything "new/original" without riding on the shoulders of past giants. Shared knowledge is the foundation of human development and occulted information has always been used against it. Liberty benefits the whole of humanity.

I like the fact that both trantor and gnoboot get along so well and share their findings! As a result both of them have made massive contributions to xpenology which is more than I can say about all the people complaining.

I can't comment on truth in that comment as I don't share your first hand knowledge of their cooperative relationship. I can say that that's not the impression I get, and here''s a snippet in support of my conclusion...

If you trust the developers/repackers here then its secure. That was the reason I went over and build my own kernel that can be installed using official pat file(installer) from the vendor. [spoiler=]My porns are very valuable to me and I don't want anybody to look at it. Kidding aside, just always keep a backup or have a test machine before you upgrade to another version.

I'm afraid I get the insinuation presented within the first two sentences, and that's based on numerous other comments by the author of that quote else where on the forum which gave a bad vibe. The attempt at diluting the intent with the humour wrapped in a spoiler does nothing to soften the opening statements. It's simply a device to draw a veil over the original intent, so that people that pick up the same vibe as me can be countered, and made to look delusional should we offer an honest opinion. Sycophants will beat me over the head shouting it was light hearted and good humoured, even though they themselves may feel uneasy about the delivery.

You have no idea what contributions or support other members here have made to open projects. They may well lack the skills to support this particular project directly, but their willingness to invest time in investigating or adopting it is a contribution. Great software with no users is beneficial to who?

Some of us here go back to the days when hackers were free and open (that spirit lives on) - there was nothing readily available 'n everyone did their bit to improve things as devs or as lowly users. Which is why many of us old timers respect freedom in all it's forms. What you never had you don't miss I guess. The likes of M$ and Apple went against the vast majority and developed proprietary code and unfair user conditions of encyclopaedic proportions. They stifle development and creativity, use and obfuscate code without giving credit and use their profits to buy up unique/successful projects, or mount legal claims small devs can't afford to fight. They also willingly breach our trust as they remove our privacy and freedoms!

This is what most people thought of the internet in 1994 "what is the internet". Some of us had been busy using bb's and

well before that on the march to where we are today. It was a community effort!

I don't understand what all the fuss is about though. We've had frequent feature requests and bug fixes from them both. So what if gnoboot expects a contribution from us users in the form of feed back?

Spirit 'n attitude. And the fact that the feedback argument is fallacy, or maybe you're under the impression that no feedback is given on this forum? An alternative blog could also be viewed as diluting this resource, while it's used to promote what could be considered a competing project.

If you're unhappy with either of them, go and start your own kernel build or buy a proper Synology. Nobody owes you anything here.

I like the fact that both trantor and gnoboot get along so well and share their findings! As a result both of them have made massive contributions to xpenology which is more than I can say about all the people complaining.

I have no idea what the relationship is between either party mentioned, all I can go on is what I read and the vibe I pick up from information in the public domain. Here is a link to a thread that gives me reason to doubt that the caring and sharing isn't quite as warm and fuzzy as you guys seem to imply > MAC address Workaround. My opinions are based on my own impressions which are based on substance rather than fallacious arguments. My opinion is based on much more data than the two items presented here. Other people may draw different conclusions and hold different opinions. In which case I guess we will have to agree to disagree.

I along with many others am extremely happy with Trantor's packages. I as well as many others don't have the skills required to build a kernel, that doesn't mean we lack other skills which we share willingly when we can. A number of members here do have Synology products, unfortunately the performance of the units isn't always adequate - especially the consumer end of the line-up.

My only objections to the gno package is the division it causes and the negative spirit that it portrays. I have no idea what the package is like or what the blog has to offer. It obviously offers something as there seems to be plenty of people migrating over especially in the quest for DSM 5. If people adopt it that's a matter for their own conscience and moral compass.

No one has claimed that anyone owes them anything that's a fallacy based on emotion. I like others vote with my mouse clicks and bandwidth and I don't beg for passwords to access anything. Jumping and hoops aren't an option as far as I'm concerned and I won't be contributing to page loads and ad views/clicks on a alternative blog. Just as I wouldn't sh1t in the communal pool! I have invested my time in Trantor's packages which more than meet my requirements in functionality, stability and community spirit.

We're all free to make choices and have an opinion.
