Hi,

This is just to say a big thank you to @luchuma and @flyride  for providing the great tutorial and the Fixsynoboot !!

This allowed me to move my EsXi VMs with RDMs from 6.1 to 6.2 up to 6.2.3 without a problem.

Your help is greatly appreciated !

Etienne

Hi

I've recently done an install with bootloader 1.04 DSM3615xs_25426. ESXi 6.7 with passthrough 8 port SATA controller. System is mostly working great and I found the tutorial easy to follow. I've applied the FixSynoboot.sh patch.

However I don't see any information under 'Info Centre - > General' the page is blank. Anyone have any ideas for a fix?

I had a similar problem, no real rhyme or reason for it.  I found a post with another fellow who found it working mysteriously later.  I finally just did a migration install to reinstall DSM and that fixed it.  Sort of a sledgehammer to pound a nail; I'm sure it was something simple but I couldn't figure it out.

I gather that the OP is not updated regularly But from what I've read it still works with ESXI 7 (free).

I am unclear on what the lasted version of DSM I can use is.

I am new to ESXI and Xpenology so I hope you don't mind newbie questions.

Thank you.

Hi guys,

I'm successfully running several Xpenology VMs very stable since years in a productive environment. Never had any issues so far.

But now I'm biting my teeth out trying to install a new VM on ESXI 6.7. Everything is working fine - up to the "DSM-6.2.3-25426 update 2".

FixSynoboot.sh is of course installed.

There is nothing fancy on this new vm:

  • 3516xs with 1.03b loader.
  • 2 SATA Controllers, one for synoboot.vmdk, and one for the system volume.

The update fails every time telling me the file might be damaged.

Any help would be appreciated.

Edit: well.. I found the solution: The provided script was formatted wrong. You had to run

sed -i -e 's/\r$//' FixSynoboot.sh

under /usr/local/etc/rc.d/ to fix the script.

In the tutorial i feel there is missing something between here:

Quote

save file, dismount all and exit.

???????

ESXi part:

Upload synoboot.vmdk and synoboot.img to esxi (in one folder)

I have NO experience with ESXI.
I have followed the tut untill here, but now confused. I have done this several times with my other server that runs 6.2.2, just not with ESXI
What to do. Where do I install ESXI and run it? How do I include the 2 files? Wich folder.

Sorry to be a complete noob :D

anyone who is able to take snapshot with this install might share some system information.

I created 3 xpes now with this settings but none of them let me take snaphots under esx (enterprise version)

thanks and thanks for the tutorial :)

i installed on my intel nuc esxi 6.7 before summer, using DSM_DS3617xs_23739.pat and OP steps without problems, added only one storage disk.

now i needed to move the storage drive in another location and finally i messed up, so removed the storage drive and made another one (i did not touch the VM or the synoboot drive).

Now i have to install dsm again but i am forced to install DSM_DS3617xs_25426 (says 23739 is too old) when i do the setup, but it always fails at 60% saying the file is broken (which is not).

I have the pat downloaded on pc, and i did not modify grub or lan settings since first installation.

the loader is just that, in the original unit its a usb dom that just holds the kernel to start the system loading (like the boot partition in old linux times)

the system (dsm) gets installed to every disk (raid1 over all disks), that way as long as one disk ist still working dsm boots up

so if you had just one disk and removed it you als removed your system partitons (or root file system if you translate it in old linux terms)

so the thing left is just the loader and the kernel on it (zImage and rd.gz)

that it forces you to use a newer version indicates the loader (synoboot.img) has a newer kernel on it (the original comes with kernel 6.2.0 aka 23739) so you must have installed a update later and the version on the loader and in the *.pat file (23739) does not match anymore

you could replace the two kernel files on you loader with the old file (osfmount can be used) or you replace the synoboot.img with the old original one but you would still need to change the grub.cfg for the mac that is use in the vm ( i guess)

i''m no expert with esxi and xpenology but i do remember a boot fix about it lately with 6.2.3

https://xpenology.com/forum/topic/28183-running-623-on-esxi-synoboot-is-broken-fix-available

so check if that applys

i am using the one included in the zip DS3615xs 6.0.2 Jun's Mod V1.01 on OP

is there newer version?

thats kind of impossible, dsm 23739 is dsm 6.2 and thats only working with loader 1.03b

As I see, this issue happens when second disk is too small. I use 100GB vdisk. So I still can't find the answer, what am I doing wrong.
