If you get an error about connecting to the network - that's the reason.. Tell us more details? Was the real sn/Mac combination from a completely different nas? Or was it from a real 918, so same model...

I had tried to use a real one and change it slightly but it didn't work and I got the error about network connectivity.

Ok, was quite sure that that was going to work, I wonder if the same truck also works on a 3615

No idea as to how long this is going to continue to work for though.. It's a legit key; but who knows what will happen after any Surveillance Station updates etc.. So far so good though.. Means I can retire the DS216j I had running my 3rd camera..
NoFate Posted November 2, 2018 Author Share #30 Posted November 2, 2018 Well , bacause of the model off course, if you use a real 918 key on a virtual 918 system, no way that Synology is knowing that... If you use a real 918 key on a virtual 3515... I think Synology knows it .... Because probably the model number is also in the sn/Mac combination
Hostilian Posted November 2, 2018 Share #31 Posted November 2, 2018 Not sure what you mean.. The Surveillance station licenses are not specific to any model - they can be used on any model.. If you mean using an actual DS3615 SN/MAC on a virtual DS3615 box, then I think adding a SS license should work.. Not much different to what I did.. NoFate Posted November 2, 2018 Author Share #32 Posted November 2, 2018 Indeed , license are not specific, but they need to be activated on Synology servers , therefore I think the combination of sn AND Mac AND model needs to be all correct
Hostilian Posted November 2, 2018 Share #33 Posted November 2, 2018 Well yeah, that's the whole point.. I've always used SN/MACs that are specific to the model - at least within the same range - on all of my boxes.. That wasn't enough for the Surveillance station license.. It needs to mirror an actual box.
marigo Posted November 5, 2018 Share #34 Posted November 5, 2018 (edited) You can also try the following: Disconnect the xpenology from the internet Apply the key You get a warning that there is something wrong. Just click "ok" Connect the xpenology again The key should have been applied. Note: This does not work on latest surveillance station package (8.2.1-5765) Edited November 5, 2018 by marigo
NoFate Posted November 5, 2018 Author Share #35 Posted November 5, 2018 good to know what i was thinking... if you have a real SN/MAC combination, from ANOTHER model can we change the model for example in the grub file from 3615 to the another model where you have the real sn/mac combiation from ? marigo Posted November 5, 2018 Share #36 Posted November 5, 2018 Sure you can change this. I have applied my serial/mac from my DS211j. All Synology packages are working on xpenology.
NoFate Posted November 5, 2018 Author Share #37 Posted November 5, 2018 ah ok, verry good to know, so it means your xpenology is actually an ds211j ? so also quickconnect should work then not that i am going to use it
marigo Posted November 5, 2018 Share #38 Posted November 5, 2018 (edited) I have never used quickconnect to get to my xpenology. I use a VPN to connect to home when on the road. Personally I prefer to block all internet activity of my xpenology. Only when I need to upgrade some packages, Internet connectivity is allowed. (or install manually) Edited November 5, 2018 by marigo
NoFate Posted November 5, 2018 Author Share #39 Posted November 5, 2018 ok, gonna setup a new synology on my esxi setup with a custom model in the grub with real sn/mac combo if that works, gonna buy a license

Did not work. Used REAL combo SN/MAC but different model and it did not work. Give it a shot on your end, maybe it will, but from my experience it did not. NoFate Posted November 5, 2018 Author Share #41 Posted November 5, 2018 but did you also change your xpenology grub file to that model? so not only sn/mac ?

Yes, I did that before installation. Model + SN + Mac = WORKS SN + MAC + DIFFERENT MODEL THAN THE SN/MAC BELONG TO = DOES NOT WORK
NoFate Posted November 5, 2018 Author Share #43 Posted November 5, 2018 ok, wanted to test also, i have a real ds1512+ , so changed SN+MAC in grub file also changed this : syno_hw_version=DS1512+ now, on first boot to install DSM , it still recognizes the ds3615 ? what else do i need to change, to the system thinks its a ds1512 ? I dont think you can do it that way around; unless someone releases a loader for a DS1512.. You could then install the pat file for that model. Why do you want to do that though? License keys are now transferable between systems (thanks EU) as long as it's only on one system at a time...

However, it might be worth a shot.. You can buy it anyway - as you can transfer the license to whatever you can get to work on your Xpenology (as long as it's only on 1 system at a time).. ......and if you can't get it to work, you can always sell it on (or return it).. NoFate Posted November 8, 2018 Author Share #47 Posted November 8, 2018 well, alread tried changing the model name in grub, but then i get a corrupted system, so its a no go
Alex-1 Posted June 1, 2019 Share #48 Posted June 1, 2019 Hi guys.. any news on that? I am very happy new user of xpenology (DS918+ and 6.2.1) and trying to start using Surveillance Station with more than 2 cameras.. but it would be better know that the license will work.. Polanskiman Posted June 4, 2019 Share #49 Posted June 4, 2019 Unless you have a genuine combo SN/MAC for a DS918+ and they were used during installation, no it won't work. Still though it's not a warranty!
