Driver extension jun 1.03a2/DSM6.2.x for DS918+

This version is alpha, as the loader 1.03a2 is, so DO NOT use this on a "production" systems and be prepared to loose the data you have on the "test-system" (I recommend you have a very recent backup)

 

:!:!!!all sata_* and pata_* drivers are still not working because of the kernel source changes Synology did (same as in kernel 3.10.102 used and modded by Synology), as long as no one writes a patch for this I can use to fix this, it will stay this way !!!:!:

 

HP SmartArray Controller driver (hpsa.ko) is back in for testing (for now the one that comes with kernel 4.4.59), my P400 i had access to was to old for this driver

so please try to test, newer controller even seem to have a IT mode so if present try it with this mode

 

To check if the hardware is supported with a driver, use a running DSM installation or boot a live Ubuntu from usb. In console type the following:

lspci -k | grep 'Kernel driver'

That command will list the used kernel modules for the hardware. Modules for network and storage will be listed. Compare that with the list of modules that comes with the extra.lzma ramdisks provided below.

Other things good to know about DS918+ image and loader 1.03a2:

1. DS918+ image comes with a limit for 2 internal network ports in synoinfo.conf (the original hardware has two ports and does not have a pcie slot for extending)

jun's loader does not changes this (now?), so if you plan to user more then 2 ports you will have to manually change the synoinfo.conf

(3615 and 3617 are bigger business models and have options for additional network card, the default from synology is 8 on this systems)

2. hardware transcoding seems to crash the system when a monitor is attached, unplug monitor, reboot try again

to see if there is decoding hardware present you can try this (there should be something in like card0)

ls -al /dev/dri/

when using plex you should download the 64bit version from website, with plex pass active (hardware-accelerated streaming is a premium feature and requires an payed active Plex Pass subscription), Settings > Server > Transcoder, Turn on Show Advanced, Turn on Use hardware acceleration when available

 

3. if your screen goes blank during boot and the system does not show up in network the kernel might have crashed on boot while loading i915.ko driver (CPU internal GPU)

look in your bios for a legacy mode option, disable it and try again

(boot process and crash can be seen when using a "good old" serial cable and a console program like putty on a 2nd computer - that's rarely done but if you want to know for sure, that's your way to find out, DSM does not have a typical boot screen that shows log info and login prompt after boot, that's redirected to the serial port)

also just for a bare Asrock J3445M with 2x ahci storage and a realtek onboard nic you dont need this extra,lzma, the driver for this are even inside the original dsm 6.2 file

same as @modboxx hardware, just ahci (driver from synology dsm) and realtek 8111 (r8168.ko, v8.044.02) nothing from my extra.lzma used, just what synology and jun already provided

on write speed you should be more specific, is it about network speed or is the ahci/disk speed limited

realtek nic implementations are know to be "difficult" but its not a chip thing, i have pcie card with 8168e chip and tests with dsm (mainly 6.1) i have seen speeds of 112MB/s (SMB/CIFS), same as the intel nic did

latest driver version by realtek is 8.045 from 9/2017 so its synologys and jun's are pretty close to recent, not much gain to expect from the latest driver

 

your board has a pcie 1x slot so you can test a different nic if you want

I got 2x ASM1061 2 ports each card and a single nvme card with a sm961 but so far so good.

Thanks for putting this together. I've added to to my 1.03b usb stick which boots fine using the onboard sata + 2 port ahci sata card. However, when i stick my IT mode (LSI 9211-8i firmware) Perc H310 card in and attach all my drives to that, it loads mpt2sas successfully, appears to see the 4 drives but complains about umount: can't umount /dev: Device or resource busy

 

It gets a bit further and looks like it loads a bunch of other drivers but never gives me network access. Unplug the drives, plug them back into the onabord controller and it boots again.

 

Any ideas?

 

Disk write speeds are still terrible though. Reading gives me a the full 115MB/s but writing is all over the shop.

on 1st try the kernel drivers for mpt2sas/mpt3sas did not work so i switched to the v20 kernel source of mpt2sas i already had from loader using with 1.02, 918+ uses kernel 4.4 and the release date of the driver is before the release date of the kernel so there might be hidden problems, my plan was to check an this if problems come up and try the kernel drivers again

i've tested with a 9211-8i on a skylake with Q150 chipset in a pcie 16x slot and i was able to make one connected disk part of a raid1

what hardware did you try and did the pcie slot had a least 8x pcie lanes (have not tried what will happen when its used in a slot with less then 8 lanes), your 2 x sata onboard implies a smaller hardware with low count of pcie slots and lanes

thats ahci i guess but how do you test when there is no network access, there seems to be some parts missing on what you use and how you test

just as a guess, check the cache settings of the disks, if write back cache of disks are not active then there will be less performance, synology has settings inside the disk manager for this but i dont know what exactly is done when its not working

ah good point! the board has a x16 slot but is only electrically connected as x2. Interestingly enough - it saw the 4 drives attached, just wouldn't umount /dev according to the serial output.

the board has a Realtek RTL8111GR chip. i used iperf to test the network and it seemed fine. Was getting over 900mbps on continuous loops.

using dd and writing zeros to the array. trying to write ~10GB of data showed that the average writing speed was 35MB/s - whereas the same drives in another machine (using AHCI and juns 1.02b loader) was over 120MB/s. 

 

I had a look through the control panel but nothing really changed the performance. i've installed windows to do some more tests, will try ubunu next - but just trying to hit each component from different angles.

The board i have uses the same CPU as the 918+ and Intel's specs page says it only has a max of 2 SATA ports. Looking at other branded boards, they add sata ports by utilising third party AHCI controllers just like the PCIe version I've put in.

i've tried the mpt3sas (includes the mpt2sas code) kernel driver from synologys 4.4.59, no luck just crashes on boot, the mpt2sas i provide is from the latest external source so i dont see what i could do if it does not work on your system, i does on mine so its not a general problem with the driver

the ahci is part of the synology kernel, so kind of nothing i can do here, only thing might be some tweaks to the start options in grub?

the chip itself is at least 4 years old so not much to expect, if you get 900mbps then its not to bad

Thanks for all your work on these! My LSI 9211-8i (IT mode) came in yesterday and I did some testing on my 6.2 box.  It's a Supermicro x10slm+-f with E3-1220v3. 6.2 is running well and stable on it with just the onboard SATA ports.

 

Plugged in the LSI and booted with the standard loader. As expected, drives were not detected on the LSI card.

Added the modified extra.lzma to the usb and it booted fine and disks were detected on the LSI card but with some issues.

 

1. Hotswap was broken, it's fine when plugging in but when a disk is taken out, dsm will crash and reboot.

2. S.M.A.R.T. data were missing on the disks plugged into the LSI card.

 

Messed around with BIOS settings for a bit with no luck.  To rule out if it's a hardware issue, I booted up 6.1(DS3617)  with the 1.02b loader and everything appears to be working. Hotswap doesn't crash and S.M.A.R.T readings were available.

 

I'm in no rush to transfer my "production" disks to this box so I'm open for more testing later.  This is somewhat new to me so I don't know what kind of logs to pull and share at this time.

i've checked with my test system and the smart problem is also to be seen there, i never flipped open the disk in HDD/SSD, just checked if disk(s) found and created volume/raid

there is also no serial number and firmware version

i'd prefer to use the original kernel driver but i cant see why its crashing on load, the (older) mpt2sas seems not to be a good fit, at least its working, thats more the what i got with the 916+ image, but yes without hdd serial and smart it pretty limited

one thing in the log indicates that there is something wrong

i guess from some experiments that the buisiness models use different kernel code /driver and might have additional stuff in place to handle mpt controllers the synology way

its a first time for a consumer model with the 918+

as long as we dont have the recent kernel sources (synology did not publish anything, looks like they dont like the GPL way) it will be difficult to say, also 3615/3617 still use the old 3.10.105 kernel with dsm 6.2

I booted up 6.2 again with the custom extra.lzma and got about the same error messages.  It's super late when I was doing this and I may have done something wrong, but when trying to install DSM with only a drive connected to the HBA, the installer reported no disks detected.  Installed dsm on a disk connected to the onboard sata and once booted, it can detect disks on the hba again.

so the driver mpt2sas is working properly, only dsm fails to use the information, i guess synology has its ways to filter and the information gets lost on the way (with 918+ its not as with the business units 3615/3617 those come natively with lsi/sas support)

for now its not a driver thing, smart does work as seen in the output, maybe some else might have the time to look into this to see if it can be fixed by addind some scripts or programs from the business units or adapt things from there

i've test this too with the driver that will be in extra.lzma 0.3 (will be later this evening online), it did work without problems

connected a disk already installed on a ahci port with dsm as sigle disk to the lsi, came up without problem

emptied a disk and connected it to the lsi (2 port ahci + 8 port lsi) as disk 8 and booted up the the usb flash drive, installed to the disk without problems and booted after installed

 

edit: looks like the reboot only happens when more then a system/swap partition is on the disk, reproduced the reboot with a SHR volume on the 2nd disk

also when reconnecting the disk is not recognized as formerly used disk, only after reboot the system partition and  SHR partiton was recognised

so replugging is also not really working

hotplugging should be avoided when using the mpt2sas driver

 

 

 

so the driver is in basic working condition from my point of view (cant see how to improve it further)

won't get better as i cant find out why the newer driver mpt3sas (that also support mpt2sas controllers) is not working - see my post above and the spoiler part with the log

if someone has a idea whats wrong drop a comment here

(i've tried mpt3sas from the kernel and v23 from external source, both have the same crash)

There is no available extra ramdisk for 3617xs for the current loader (1.03a2 or 1.02b) yet.
