In any case, I've been able to get NVMe drives to work (in my case, U.2 interfaced drives, but they are the same to the system as M.2 NVMe) using ESXi and configuring the NVMe drives as physical RDM. I'm not aware of anyone getting NVMe to work in any other way as of yet.
