Progress of 6.2 loader

jun
Message added by Polanskiman

Let me get things straighten up here before this thread starts going sideways. This is the developper discussion room. Not a newbie forum to start asking for guides and whatnot. @jun hasn't even said anything about the loader he has uploaded to his repository. So I would advise self control. Also, to those in panic mode trying to make things work desperately please use your personal jugement and experience. If you want to have a positive contribution to this thread then please do so by posting about possible bugs or things that don't work (beyond the "no network" boring posts of course). I am talking about serious bugs or the such. All other requests will from now on be deleted or moved if appropriate. I have no time to babysit anymore. Use the forum subsections.

my question is, is the loader 1.03a2 ready for production system? what about that kernel panic, does it matter?

a2 means alpha for a reason I guess. What's wrong with staying on 6.1 atm?

nothing is wrong with 6.1.

but alpha or beta does not mean anything here -> there is never a loader that is labeled STABLE

as I remember 1.02a2 was used long time before 1.02b came out

I am using j3455 board so ds918+ would suit best to my system. and there is a new kernel in 6.2 on ds918+

Would be really nice if it would be possible to override the maxdisk option of the synoconfig as a parameter. A system-update otherwise is not possible with more than 12 disks (without a rebuild or a loss if more than 14 disks.

Would really love this too as I use a 24 bay Supermicro with 12HDDs. Could anyone explain why it does this on more than 12 disks? Really sucks rebuilding all the time.

as long as you have 12 disks and and they are connected to the first 12 ports you should not have any problems, its only a thing if you use a port above the count of 12 as this is the default for jun's loader (more or less by accident as 3615/3617 come with 12 from synology and jun refitted this "12" into his patch as he created 916+/918+ to have it as much like the "standard" used by most users until this point)

if you want a "smooth" update with more then 12 ports i see 2 ways (both not tested as i dont need it for my system)

1. install the update and when it reboots after the update (your 24 disk config was replaced by the default config from synology) do not boot the 1st time with your normal usb flash drive, use one with a live/recovery linux, after booting this mount the system partition (mdadm raid1 over all disks, this steps are part of the downgrade version howto), change synoinfo.conf's how you need it to be, reboot with normal dsm loader flash drive

2. (more difficult but universal if its done), juns loader patches the orgininal synoinfo.conf it it finds the "old" (aka original synology parts) synoinfo.conf entrys and if there will change it to what you usualy see with jun's loader, you would have to extract extra.lzma, rewrite the patch file inside extra.lzma to change the values in question to fit 24 drives and repack extra.lzma

in case of 916+/918+ its changed from 4 to 12, so should be easy to to as you can replace jun's values by your own, in case of 3615/3617 its much more complicated as the synology default is already 12 and jun's patch does not contain parts in that direction so you would have to extend the patch by creating new parts, needs more skills but possible

if done correct it only needs to be redone when creating a new flash drive or put in another extra.lzma (like for newer drivers)

just a small warning for people trying the 918+ with more then 2 NIC's (more precisely more then 2 network ports)

(same goes for 916+ i guess)

i had some fun with that as non working drivers and this "new" limit interfered confused me a little (driver working and no ethX)

the limit is there for years but not interfered when using the bigger business models that can have additional nic's

918+ has

maxlanports="2"

in synoinfo.conf (in /etc AND /etc.defaults) the standard for the "normal" 3615/3617 is "8"

to get more then two ports working you need to change this or you will and up with only eth0 and eth1

you can change maxlanport to 8

maxlanport="8"

and also should add values for ethX_mtu (if i remember correctly they where already up to eth3 - i guess - as there are 2 wifi usb allowed as addition to the two internal)

eth4_mtu="1500"
eth5_mtu="1500"
eth6_mtu="1500"
eth7_mtu="1500"

you might add wol options but imho not really needed

eth2_wol_options="d"
eth3_wol_options="d"
eth4_wol_options="d"
eth5_wol_options="d"
eth6_wol_options="d"
eth7_wol_options="d"

hopefully after sorting this out the extra.lzma will be tested soon

also another warning about bios settings for 918+ image

i have a hp prodesk 600 g2 for testing (skylake) and the booting was erratic and resulted often in kernel crashes

after swtichg off the legacy option in bios (no legacy, no secure boot) the system comes up stable every time when booting

the crash was related to 915i driver so i guess i've never seen this before as when testing 3615/3617 it does not matter and with 916+ testing i guess the i915 was not used when loading as it did not fit the (newer) hardware

I wanted to try DSM 6.2 and the new loader and my i5-2500k/i5-4570 were not supported (although i5-4570 is on the list - maybee a network driver issue).

So I bought a ASRock J3455-ITX which seems to be the more promising. Here are my advices to those who would like try it too.

1/ Do not plug your USB stick on USB3 port. I got an error 13 during installation until I changed to USB2 port.

2/ Be patient. When I launch the system, It lasts sometimes 2 minutes or more to get an IP address. You can think it is not working whereas it is only super slow.

3/ Everything works fine including DSM 6.2 Update 1, except hardware transcoding. If you untick the box (see capture below) in videostation, everyting is fine. If you tick it, system gets frozen as soon as you launch a transcoding.

Maybee those advices are valid only for this motherboard/CPU.

don't hold back about the nic, if we know what vendor/type (if its onboard neme the board) someone might be able to make a estimate (at least i will)

i5-2500k will be to old, 4th gen intel core seems to be the min. for 918+ - did you actually tried it? if yes i will add it so the not working section

about the i5-4570, we had at least 3 different reports (45xx/46xx/47xx) for Haswell to work

i will add a comment about this one in m ylist

strange as J3455 is exactly the cpu that comes with the 918+

- I tried both i5-2500k and i5-4570 and never got an IP address. So I was not able to go further. Indeed, i5-2500k seemed too old so I did not insist on it.

- Indeed, my bet was that using same CPU as 918+, It should work as well as possible. I will run more tests in the following days.

not a general problem, tried a fresh install from a usb3 port on my skylake test system, no problems, clean install

but should not be ignored when having error 13 problems, did see error 13 problems (vid/pid and pat file ok) on my C2550 system when testing 918+, might be something different but at least its not always wrong vid/pid

I guess this could be linked to controller driver or BIOS settings, so motherboard specific ? (That was a fresh install too)

I used default BIOS settings and I read here & there that there are some tweaks (AHCI, legacy settings...). Some of them could even solve the hardware transcoding problem ?

Here again, i will run some tests as soon as I have enough time.

i have uploaded the first version of my extra.lzma for 1.03a2/DSM 6.2 if anyone want to give it a try

in contrary to 916+ i got mpt2sas working so the often used lsi sas 9211 will work, also as its a new kernel we might give the hp smart array controllers a new try, the driver from kernel 4.4.59 is included for testing, if that does not work we can still try the driver from external source

defiantly not working (as in kernel 3.10.102 - its a synology mod thing) are all sata_* and pata_* drivers

Successfully migrate from 3617 to 918+ on Asrock J5005 with Gemini Lake Pentium Silver J5005 and + Driver extension jun 1.03a2/DSM6.2.x for DS918+.

Could you check, if hardware encoding using intel quick sync is working with emby or plex?

Sorry, I am newbie. Can you tell me how I can do it well? Sorry for my english...

Well you need a Movie on your NAS and Emby (a programm to organize movies and other things). Then you have to go into the settings of emby and enable hardware acceleration (intel quick sync) and start a video in another resolution. Finally check for the load on your Cpu and if it is as low as normal, then it works, if it goes above ~50% load, then it doesnt work.

Hi guys,

I'm considering buying some new hardware to use Jun's new loader. Looking through @IG-88's great CPU list, there's only a couple CPU's that allow hardware transcode.

The J3455 CPU would probably be the best choice as it's identical to the 918+, but the Asrock J3455-ITX ("B" model?) board we have locally available only has 2 SATA ports whereas the Asrock J4205-ITX has 4 SATA and an M.2 slot. I would've jumped on it but looks like @x01015918 is having some trouble with it here and here.

Has anyone else confirmed whether the J4205 is actually working as nicely as the J3455 with Jun's loader and 6.1.2? Or do these issues also occur with non-synology J3455 boards?
