Progress of 6.2 loader

Message added by Polanskiman

Let me get things straighten up here before this thread starts going sideways. This is the developper discussion room. Not a newbie forum to start asking for guides and whatnot. @jun hasn't even said anything about the loader he has uploaded to his repository. So I would advise self control. Also, to those in panic mode trying to make things work desperately please use your personal jugement and experience. If you want to have a positive contribution to this thread then please do so by posting about possible bugs or things that don't work (beyond the "no network" boring posts of course). I am talking about serious bugs or the such. All other requests will from now on be deleted or moved if appropriate. I have no time to babysit anymore. Use the forum subsections.

I just tried the DS918p 6.2-23739 Update 1 on a baremetal ASRock J3455-ITX using Jun's 1.03a2 loader and after the automatic reboot, the update experienced a kernel panic.

Can you try the ds3517xs firmware? I am using the j4105 cpu and the ds3517 seems to be more reliable than the 918 for this cpu.

I have other motherboards running DS3615xs and DS3617xs without any problems.  I have a couple ASRock J3455-ITX motherboards I am testing Jun's 1.03a2 loader.  A failed update is positive feedback to Jun, indicating  there could be a problem with the loader.  Currently, it is only alpha.  I was able to do a reinstall on the J3455-ITX which reverted the system back to the previous state before the update.  The ASRock J3455-ITX's are only test systems.  No harm done other then the time to do the reinstall.  Thanks for your feedback.

hmm, the fact that it coems up without a disc idicates the kernel and realtek network driver are working,, that board has 2x intel onboard (ahci) and 2 ports ASMedia ASM1061, also ahci with kernel 4.x (https://cateee.net/lkddb/web-lkddb/SATA_AHCI.html)

maybe you can try disabling the asmedia in bios for testing? or try installing 6.2 on a different system and after installing use flash drive and hdd on th Q1900

It seem to be a Problem with my 2.5'' Diskdrive (with my 3.5'' Drives it seems to work).

It works with the ASMEDIA Sata port but not with the intel SATA port.  When I switch the Intel Sata Port to IDE the machine comes up with a wrong IP (like 169.xxx.xxx.xxx)

Now I try installation on the ASMEDIA Sata port.

UPDATE:

1. After Install the PAT-File the system stucks in Reboot.

2. After hard Reboot the System comes up and on the HTML Interface I can see a 404 Page

After a few minutes the system shuts down (automaticly)

3. After turn the machine on again, it shuts down after some minutes

4. System is now inpossible to boot. Can't find it with syno Assistant.

@mrlgm007 how far are you getting?

What CPU do you have on this?  I am sure it is going to make the difference.  I tried to setup a machine exactly like that, but wouldn't boot because of the processor.

Does anybody know if a Q9500 Core2Quad would work with 6.2?

it's an very old CPU , i think is not compatible

Actually only Gemini Lake , Apollo Lake , Skylake , Kaby Lake , Coffee Lake and perhaps Haswell CPU is compatible

Thank you, you saved me the trouble of fiddling around with that old stuff.

the detailed list with the collected feedback is this

(for 918+ anything older then Haswell, intel core 4th gen, is not working)

I did not know there was a specific criteria required? I see people posting what they think they should?  Tell me what you want and I will, no need to get sassy

sorry did not wanted to be rude, giving as much information about the config might help to figure out for others if they might have a  similar configuration and how likely it is that it may work, we are trying to document where its working and where not and to find out why (so far 4th gen intel core seems to be minimum for 918+)

It's on a j3455

I should have been more specific.  The patch changes max disk to 12 and adds an additional 4 disks to internalportcfg but that's still 8.  The reason I asked was because when I did a remap of the first disk it didn't show up which was even more confusing.  Additionally, sataportmap is only set to 4.  0c will kernel panic

i don't know why jun did this, it was the same on 916+ so i guess he had a reason but a i cant see it, i'd tend to change internalportcfg for 12 disks as used by synology in 3615/3617

on a 12 port system i had two disks for testing on port 4 and 12 and the disk on port 12 was working in the same way as the disk on port 4, so its not a problem in general

I thought this was a dev forum where people can come and complain about the new awesomely annoying "Features" Synology added?

not having a user root is pretty much normal on linux today, has nothing to do with synology

but in general i'd say complains are for synology, suggestions for xpenology :-)

if you are referring to synouser? that longer works by itself, have to do more, the one I picked was to add no NOPASSWD but that means no pass prompt on sudo su.

Going back as why not just ...It's really just a matter of convenience with winscp.

instead of using root you can modify the /etc/sudoers

change

%administrators ALL=(ALL) ALL

into

%administrators ALL=NOPASSWD: ALL

and you should be able to use your admin account with winscp

918+ has a lot more goodies, you know that.

compared to 916+ its "only" the newer hardware transcoding support (kaby/coffee lake)?

hopefully more/better drivers then with kernel 3.10.x on 3615/3617

(at least i got mpt2sas working with 918+, i did not get this working on 916+)

I'm confused, I thought the current 1.03a2 bootloader is exclusively for the 918+

How are you using ds3517 with 6.2 firmware?

Intel Core i7-8700K

ASRock Z370M Pro4

Migrated DSM from 916+ to 918+.

Tested to boot: ok

Tested to video hardware transcode: not working (latest Plex Pass and Videostation)

Would appreciate any feedback on the hardware transcoding? Activation looks okay with SN/MAC, maybe missing some codecs?

{"success":true,"activated_codec":["h264_dec","h264_enc"],"token":"xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx"}

I also ran this command:

sudo synocodectool —activate_codec h264_dec --pkgname videostation
reboot

There were some errors like this in the logs:

2018-07-05T15:11:34+01:00 Syno synoscgi_SYNO.VideoStation2.Streaming_2_open[4635]: json_utils.cpp:147 Failed to parse json file [/tmp/VideoStation/enabled]

I noticed the /dev/dri folder is missing? It was the same on 916+. No HW transcoding in Plex or Video Station.

Hi mate, I think you misunderstood. He said he was testing ds3517 with 6.2.

I was asking how he was doing this.

I am testing ds3517 with 6.17. In my case I found the 918 is not stable enough to boot with 6.17 DSM and my j4105 motherboard, however ds3517 seems to do pretty good jobs.

Installed on my H110M ITX with a G4560. Using a valid SN (MAC unchanged) I got activated codecs.

root@NASTest:~# cat /usr/syno/etc/packages/VideoStation/codecs.conf
support_codec_h264="yes"
support_codec_vc1="yes"
support_codec_mpeg4part2="yes"
support_codec_aac="yes"

It starts transcoding with HW accel according to top, CPU usage is at 25%:

/var/packages/VideoStation/target/bin/ffmpeg -ss 0.000 -vaapi_device /dev/dri/renderD128 -hwaccel vaapi -hwaccel_output_format vaapi -noautorotate -i /volume1/video/testvideo.mkv -r 24 -vcode+

However it reboots after seemingly exactly 5 seconds after the video starts playing. I'll see if I can find more detailed logs. I can't find anything in any of the files in /var/log/, they all skip the time the crash happens at, the kernel log is just the boot process which repeats right after a crash as expected, but there's nothing in between them.

Quick update on my issue. I just noticed the Intel Coffee Lake CPU's (8th gen) are officially supported in Linux kernel 4.15 (released 18.01.18). The DS918+ is using kernel version 4.4 (released 10.01.16) so it's quite far behind the main release cycle..

I guess it will take quite a while for the i7 8700K to get HW acceleration in DSM unless Synology patch it in? So it looks like IG-88's list is correct for these 8th gen CPU's (working but without hw acceleration).

hy,

today I tried a upgrade of the hardware from my productive system, but with another disk with an 6.1.x testinstallation.

the installation succeeded, but there was a kernel panic during install. after a manual reboot the system was ready and working!

my hardware is:

HW: ASROCK J3455-ITX, 8GB RAM Crucial

SW: dsm 6.1.x ds916+ image 1.02b loader

it seems that all hardware is working, also an the onboard realtek nic

my question is, is the loader 1.03a2 ready for production system? what about that kernel panic, does it matter?
