Lost usb boot stick

slackman99

Question

Morning all,

I installed DSM onto an HP microserver a few years ago.

We have moved house and in the move, the usb boot stick has gone missing. I can't remember what version of DSM is on the server, so have no idea which boot stick version I need to re-create.

I don't want to brick the system by trying to boot with the wrong bootloader.

Is there a 'safe' bootloader that will work with most versions of DSM?

Is there a way to find out what version I need without being able to boot into DSM?

When I create a new boot stick, it will be plugged in to the usb port inside the server so I can't lose it from now on!

No.

Yes. Read this tutorial:

This should give you access to the system partition. You will need a live ubuntu/linux/... USB.

From there simply look up the file called VERSION under /etc.defaults. It will tell you what exact version you are on. Do not mess with any file. Simple open, look and close.
