XPEnology gnoBoot

gnoboot

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm about to install XPEnology via gnoboot on my home-NAS.

I have a frew questions. (Also I might suggest, as this thread grows and grows to setup a sub-forum for gnoboot)

The gnoboot image goes on a usb thumb drive which probably corresponds to the "hidden" flash-boot device inside a normal synology box. The installer then installs the DSM onto the mirrored partition on all harddrives.

As thumb drives _will_ fail some day, I wanted to ask if it's just a read only thing and if I can restore the downloaded gnoboot image to another thumb-drive and all will be fine again?

Minor updates are downloaded in place and then the replacement with "sed" has to be done (why, do we need to change that string?). What about major releases. Let's say DSM 5.1 or even 6.0. Would one first update the gnoboot thumb drive and then in-place upgrade the DSM software?

thanks for helping out,

Dark-Sider

You can just replace the usb, nothing is saved on it...

Hello!

I've installed XPEnology gnoBoot on my HP Microserver G7 N54 over ESXi 5.

All right, but my speed of copying on XPEnology is very slow (at beginning over 60 Mbs, after that it go lower to 5 Mbs). If I install XPEnology as real OS on my disk speed of copying files into Microserver over 110 Mbs.

If you have got same scheme can you provide me your speed.

At this moment I will try installing another hypervisor (Proxmox) and test XPEnology on it.

Can it be some troubles with configuration of ESXi and problem can be solved by fixing it ?

Thanks!

have a look at ESXi thread - i think there was a discussion or several posts at least on pvscsi, RDM and pass-through speeds

I got same results. I found out that the RDM solution makes the access to HDD much slower comparing to the VMDK-drive. In random places in this forum, I read similar results.

Currently, I decided to use XPEnology on the real device, but spend the smallest drive for ESXi needs.

Today, I've installed ProxMox and install XPEnology in virtualmachine - I've got about 40-45 Mbs in writing on disk.

Thats much better, but i will search more to have good result. Maybe try Citrix Xen Server?

Elgato DTT DVB-T Sick is making problems in my vm. Is a Nova-T clone I think.

System is gnoBoot alpha 10.5 with DSM 5 update 2.

Videostation didn't detect the stick.

and reached this in dmesg:

usbcore: registered new interface driver dvb_usb_dib0700

What now?

I am currently using a HP 54L and running synology 4.3-3810. I am using iSCSI with my windows 2012 server and running 5 or so hyper-v machines. If I update to DSM 5.0 update 2 is iSCSI working properly? I have searched the forum and posts but I can't get a confirmation if iSCSI works on the latest version.

Thanks

Functon missing : USBSD copy or SD copy

as the org. DSM 5.0 got those function.

fi so I could use it to copy mine sd photos into it ...

1. DS3612xs do not have SD Card Reader

2. to facilitate SD copy, you need a Copy Button, non-real synology hardware do not has such thing, even you cannot use the power button to shutdown the NAS, because the kernel do not have the interface can read its status

does it make sense to you

Hi !

I'm successfully install gnoboot 10.4 on Readynas pro 2 ( thank's Gnoboot for you work ) but any buttons and led status work.

Led disk status is userless, but copy and reset buttons is a little userfully

Original netgear kernel has a special module call nv6gpio.ko who "talk's" whit led and buttons. Is is possible compile it from src file and "inject" to gnoboot kernel ?

I have source code this original module

P.S.

sorry for my english

Haven't looked into it  .

Hello,

with 10.5 my PERC310 (8 SATA/SAS-Port Controller) doesnt work, the Volume is not showing up...with 10.4 it works great...PLS Help

I´ve created the Volume in the BIOS settings (4 SAS Drives / 1 Volume) so i dont have to create an Software-Raid in the DSM.

I'm using 9211-8i and it works (IR mode) for me on ESXi+vt-d. Are you using baremetal or vt-d? Doesn't show in DSM or doesn't detect the disk?

*

For me i have always problem with Realtek network card 10DE:8136 rev=02 ( motherboard HP IPMEL-AE PEGATRON )

no IP ...?

addon cards

8086:1229 rev=02 OK

10DE:8169 rev=02 OK

I have a log with RR62x failed ...with no card in the computer

if i plug a RR622 card run , no problem in sata mode with only one HDD no RAID << fine ****

*** to change something or it really takes me a very detailed explanation **

** I know almost nothing linux !! ***

Try to blacklist r8169 using rmmod GRUB option.

BTW, I have tried MagicPro PCTV Dual USB adaptor on my Xpenology box with 10.5 alpha, the dongle is not recognized by video station.

Did you load the drivers in /etc/rc.local?

bump , anything new? Or any idea what shoul I try?

Try it again using 10.5, added more boot-up messages to trace your problem.

Hello, now I`m trying gnoboot-alpha-10.5 and v10.4 directly on hardware (MB GA-EP-DS4). Installed latest DSM 5.0-4458. I have some issuses with that configuration.

1. When system boots up I have to wait about 5min to be available on the network, or unplug and plug in Lan cable. Motherboard using Realtek 8111C Chip.

2. Unable to install Update 1 no matter if trying automatic or manual update. System loads update the saying that the file is broken.

3. My DVB-T dongle not workig (works well on Trantor version and 4.3). This is Manta dvbtusb01 it is based on chipset It9135. As I see drivers are present in system, but Videostation not recognizes any tv card.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks

Try to blacklist r8169 using rmmod GRUB option. Did you load the DVB drivers in /etc/rc.local?

Ok, rmmod r8169 solves the problem with network. Now system boots up normally.

I`m still trying to get my DVB-T (IT 9135)tuner working, but without success.

rc.local file created, added lines:

#!/bin/sh
source /etc/rc.subr
source /.gnoboot/modules.d/05-media.conf
SYNOLoadModules $MEDIA_MOD

but still without sucess. dmesg now is looking different:

Hi,

I get 110 MB/s when copying files via GBit LAN. I'm using a LSI 9240-8i controller with stock-firmware w/o any Raid-Volumes defined. 6 WD-RED 4TB Disks are mapped via RDM (physical) into the Syno VM. The disks are attached as SCSI 0:1 thru 0:5. The Virtual Controller is LSI SAS. SMART is working except for the temp which displays 0°C

Intel e1000 as virtual NIC.

Mainborad is the A1SAM-2750F from Supermicro (Intel Avoton).

bye,

Darky

New problem....

I tried ít twice.

Made a backup via rsync... which worked.

but after is was ready no share were available anymore... df shows no drive..

after a reboot everything looks ok.

no entry in any log

so, after the file system errors is this the next curious error

Are you using ESXi5? are you able to see SMART status in your DSM?

Hi,

Are you using ESXi5? are you able to see SMART status in your DSM?

I'm using ESXi 5.5. I'm able to run and schedule SMART tests for the disks from the DSM web GUI. The disks' serial numbers also display within DSM. However, the temperature is shown as 0° C / 32° F what leads some nasty scemd.log entries every two seconds. My solution was just to delete scemd.log which prevents logging until the next reboot (or probably log rotation...). I also might just link scemd.log to /dev/null.

bye,

Darky
