Hi all, I'm back

gnoboot, great work as usual. Using your latest image with the 5.0-4458 release, it's working fine so far. Only issue I have is that there's no sit0 support, and I can't initiate a tunnel through Hurricane Electric :/

Is there any chance that you could compile it into the next release?

Does anybody have a problem where a virtual machine with DSM5.0-4458 would shutdown every day a random time because of "disk overheating" ?

Disks are virtual, how can they overheat ?

Also from /var/log/messages i frequently have such errors :

Mar 25 15:05:01 DSMesxi5 SystemInfo.cgi: disk_info_get.c:82 Failed to open /dev/sdc, errno=No such file or directory

And last few lines before it shutdown :

And this are always the last line before each forced shutdown. Any info on that?

No, I haven't. I do not even know this option. I'll try it later when I learn what does this option mean. Anyway I do not had such a problem on 4.3 with trantor's hba build.

It might be related to cpu_idle driver that I backported from kernel.org. Try it and let me know if it helps

During previous test session I obtained that error with irq16 in dmesg twice straight on two reboots within less than 10 minutes from dsm start. Today I tried to reproduce the situation (no changes in hardware or software) with no luck during 2 hours (with all the activities I had previously). A lot of segfaults with dsmnotify.cgi, but no crashes on irq... So as I can't reproduce the bug, I also have no ability to test sensibly the kernel option you mentioned. Sorry...

[11292.139798] irq 16: nobody cared (try booting with the "irqpoll" option)

Edit GRUB add irqpoll, you can also isolate the issue by disabling unused USB ports.

kernel /zImage irqpoll

EDIT: traceback happens to your i5 machine, right? Send your `lspci -vvv` result to me:) This patch (c12aba5aa0e60b7947bc8b6ea25ef55c4acf81a4) might fix it.

Hello,

I have downloaded your image (it is really impressive because the pat from Synology works immediately ), and I have some problems

there is no ACL on windows (right click on a file / directory and Properties there is ne Security page).

You say do do that

Try to insmod GRUB option synoacl_ext4.ko and synoacl_vfs.ko in 10.4.

I have made a insmod in a putty session but is not working.

I don't understand the method you recommend

kernel /zImage insmod=vmxnet3

# cat > /etc/rc.local << EOF

#!/bin/sh

source /etc/rc.subr

source /.gnoboot/modules.d/99-install.conf

source /.gnoboot/modules.d/05-media.conf

source /.gnoboot/modules.d/04-virt.conf

source /.gnoboot/modules.d/03-wifi.conf

SYNOLoadModules \$MEDIA_MOD

SYNOLoadModules \$VMWARE

SYNOLoadModules \$HYPERV

EOF

# chmod 755 /etc/rc.local

What must I do ?

I add a line (before the EOF) with the insmod ?

Doing the insmod directly doesn't work.

Also is it possible to mount a ISCSI target from another computer with your image ?

For example I create a ISCSI share from my own server and I mount it as normal drive for the GNOBoot?

Also I can't manage to apply the last update from synology (I downlaoded the last file and installed normally but there is a Update1 file that can only be applied from inside the DSM).

Thank you for your time

(I have clicked on every banner I was able to find on your web site).

Marc

Hi gnoBoot,

I updated from Trantor DSM 4.3 build 3810++ (repack v1.0) to 5.0 (stock DS3612xs 4458 .pat from Synologu) and all went smooth: I had made a backup of the configuration and I reload it after migration...I've only had to reapply the permissions to the folders, but this has also happened the last time when I go from 4.2 to 4.3.

I applied also the update1 without problems.

Everything seems to work correctly... esxi 5.5 nfs and iscsi (file level), integration with AD, timebackup from another Synology 4.2, etc.

So... great work!!!

My system: ASROCK B75 PRO3-M, 2x4 Gb ddr3 Dual Channel 1600 Mhz CL9, 8 x WD2000FYYZ 2TB, Core i3-3220 (Ivy Bridge) @3,30 Ghz, 1 x Intel® PRO/1000 PT Quad Port

Thanks!

I've been testing gnoBoot for some time now and want to say thanks for all your effort. I've had a lot of success thus far.

One thing that I am unsure of is what is the proper way to upgrade to the newest alpha? Do I just copy the latest zImage and overwrite the old one? Is there anything more to it than that? Sorry if this is a "newb" question, but an answer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

For each release I make a new vmdk (I'm using esxi), and just swap them out. On first but it updates whatever new kernel changes there are.

Whatever the issue is, it's an ongoing thing... more entries over time. And it writes to associated files in /volume1/ each time... so it causes lots of writes.

I'm on gnoboot 10.4, in esxi 5.5, using LSI 9201-8i in passthrough (VTd) w/ 4x 3TB WD REDs. I've seen it with virtual disks, w/ no HBA or passthrough as well.

You have to load ipv6 module, just google for it

I don't understand the method you recommend

kernel /zImage insmod=vmxnet3 <- GRUB option before you boot to DSM.

# cat > /etc/rc.local << EOF

#!/bin/sh

source /etc/rc.subr

source /.gnoboot/modules.d/99-install.conf

source /.gnoboot/modules.d/05-media.conf

source /.gnoboot/modules.d/04-virt.conf

source /.gnoboot/modules.d/03-wifi.conf

SYNOLoadModules \$MEDIA_MOD

SYNOLoadModules \$VMWARE

SYNOLoadModules \$HYPERV

EOF

# chmod 755 /etc/rc.local <- Run this command and lines above in your putty session.

What must I do ?

I add a line (before the EOF) with the insmod ?

Doing the insmod directly doesn't work. <- If you are loading drivers from putty session. You command should be `insmod /lib/modules/synoacl*.ko`.

Also is it possible to mount a ISCSI target from another computer with your image ?

For example I create a ISCSI share from my own server and I mount it as normal drive for the GNOBoot? <- YES

Also I can't manage to apply the last update from synology (I downlaoded the last file and installed normally but there is a Update1 file that can only be applied from inside the DSM). <- Please read the forums.

Thank you for your time

(I have clicked on every banner I was able to find on your web site).

Marc

You are right, it writes to /volume1 and might fill up your disk. Just move the core files to another directory such as /tmp or /dev/null, http://justlearningtoblog.wordpress.com/2010/07/23/enable-core-dump-files-in-fedora/

Add this line to your /etc/rc.local.

sysctl -w kernel.core_pattern=/tmp/core.%p

Thanks for the tip. I set it to null, I don't want unnecessary writes. I removed old files and now none get created

Hello,

I managed to apply the update using the following method

Download the update (but do not apply)

is a SSH :

sed 's/flashupdateDeb/flashupdateDeb1/' /autoupd@te.info > /autoupd@te.info1
mv /autoupd@te.info1 /autoupd@te.info

Go back to the DSM Gui and click the Update button.

For the insmod :

I boot normally (no change in grub) and then I open a putty session and when I do the following command

insmod /lib/modules/synoacl*.ko

I receive the error

insmod: can't insert '/lib/modules/synoacl_ext4.ko': unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter

For the ISCSI, I am looking for a guide (I will try http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/howto-setu ... initiator/)

as open iscsi is already installed and post if it is working (or not working).

Thank you

Marc

thanks for your time.

My bad, it doesn't work. Load the modules individually (i.e. insmod /lib/modules/synoacl_ext4.ko).

Checked with irqpoll boot parameter. 15 hours of runtime. No problem with irq 16 in dmesg. So it shall be the problem you imply.
