  1. Searched the forum a bunch but can't seem to find what I need.. Currently have a windows server running flexraid 🤐with 5, 2 TB drives (several Seagates bought over various periods) holding my movie collection). Want to rebuild this server into an XPEnology box. System is a Node 804 case with Mobo MSI H97M, an Intel Core i3 4160, 8GB RAM plus an IBM M1015 Raid adapter flashed to LSI IT firmware. Also have an HP NC360T dual nic laying around (no sure whether to install that or not). My migration strategy currently is: buy an 8TB drive, copy all the data off the 2 TB drives and rebuild the 5 drives into an SHR set. copy the data back and add the 8TB drive as a loose backup volume for some backups from my lan (photos, system backups etc) . I don't think adding the 8TB to the SHR set would make much sense since I would loose 6TB. Would rather have an SHR2 but I need the total of 8 TB space to hold the data. Question 1): should I split the drives between the onboard sata ports and the LSI card or should I place all the drives on the LSI card? (assuming that the onboard sata ports are detected and work with xpenology) Might be trivial to experienced builders but I consider myself an XPEnology novice Question 2): I know synology has a very elaborate disk compatibility list. Is that list driven by the synology hardware or the DSM software? (In other words: do people using xpenology adhere strict to the list and should I keep in mind which type of xs version I use? ) (planning on using the 'good old 3615xs) Remark: any comment or tips on a better migration strategy are welcome. Thanks for reading!
  2. Hi All, First post here, I'm looking to build a DIY NAS and install XPEnology on it. The NAS will mostly be used for data storage using SHR raid, but I'm also interested in playing around with some of the apps as well (maybe database server, web applications, etc). Here's what I'm looking at right now: Case: Fractal Design Node 304 (https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811352027&cm_re=fractal_case-_-11-352-027-_-Product) MOBO: ASRock H270M-ITX/ac LGA 1151 (https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16813157737) CPU: Intel Core i3-8100 Coffee Lake (8th gen) (https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117822) RAM: Crucial 8GB DDR4 2133 (https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIAB0Z6WV0783) PSU: Rosewill Glacier Series 500W Modular (https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182339) Total: ~$445 I'll most likely be putting in 4x4TB Western Digital Red hard drives and using SHR, so will have 12TB total to work with if I understand correctly. Please critique this build and whether or not this hardware will be compatible with XPEnology. Thanks!
  3. Hey this is Vish and noob to Xpenology, i was planning to buy new ds 216 until i found out about Xpenology ! i Was using ds 212j with 2tb +1tb Hdd no raid, all merged (backed up my v important data thru extarnal 1tb hd), unfortunately its motherboard crashed ! NOW is there a way where in i can use my existing dsm hdd (2+1tb HDD) in expenology like plug and play or little work around rather than starting off with a scratch like backing up all my data in other drive and then again tranferring it back which will be heck of a process ! I have another spare internal drive 500gb wherein i can set up xpenology and then attaching the existing internal drives (which i was using in ds212j, 2+1 TB ) Is it all possible ? if not what would be the best and easiest possible way out to use my internal drives in xpenology ? As you all must be knowing that windows/mac doesnt recognise the file system of dsm which makes all my data very difficult to access. Pls help me out, thanks.
