  1. I need a cheap build (better if around 100€) for torrenting, SMB and Docker. What do I already have: - 6GB PC3-10600S (4GB + 2GB) RAM https://i.imgur.com/HJqOPDW.jpg - 2TB 3.5" HDD (and it would be enough for the moment) What do I need: everything else (case, psu, mobo, cpu) Performance-wise I would like to get something like the Synology DS218play/+. I need it to also have low power consumption (I'm in europe so keep it in mind while hunting for prices ❤️ ).
  2. i wonder if these components will work nicely with DSM 6.2.3 ds918 loader i'm going to create a raid 10 https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/190886/intel-core-i3-9100f-processor-6m-cache-up-to-4-20-ghz.html https://asrock.com/mb/intel/b365m pro4/index.asp#Overview https://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B01LOOJBQY/ref=ewc_pr_img_4?smid=A20TIXVFK0Z53C&psc=1 https://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B084GRMJFS/ref=ox_sc_act_title_6?smid=A11IL2PNWYJU7H&psc=1 thanks
  3. Hello everyone, I have ordered the parts to assembly my nas as per below: asrock j4105 crucial ddr4 2400 sodimm 4GB memory pico psu 160xt leicke 12V 150W power brick 2x 4TB ironwolf sharkoon QB One case now I was wondering will the pico and power brick be provinding enough power eventually if I add an extra 4GB of RAM and a SSD? or should I instead opt for a be quiet system power 9 400W psu? thanks in advance to who can help regards S
  4. Hey all, very new to DIY NAS and XPEnology, hope my plan makes sense. Am looking to migrate family files out of wife's desktop into standalone NAS. Add in backups of PCs, phones etc. Plus Plex server (not a lot of transcoding but nice to have the option) Currently only 1TB of files so not massive. The storage was on twin 8TB HDDs with a LSI RAID card (which started getting flaky) Planned hardware is: i5-6500 CPU MSI H170 motherboard (6 SATA ports, 4xDDR4 ram slots 2x8GB RAM @3200MHz (not that it will run that fast) 2x8TB HDDs Circa 550 watt PSU I have a couple of small spare SSDs floating around, if they serve a purpose? Maybe chuck in a 5yo graphics card if there's a point to that also So my questions are: Hardware sound ok? What DSM version should I be looking at? eg DS918+ vs 3617xs? Updates - I've noted all the warnings, do I give the latest a crack since I'm starting from a blank slate, or stick with an earlier version? Thanks in advance for any advice!
  5. Hello, Longtime user of Synology but new to XPEnology. I currently have DS412+ and has been running without any issues for about 7 years now. Since it is reaching EOL with no updates after DSM 7, I am planning to build out xpenology as a hyperbackup destination until I buy another synology unit. Am planning to install xpenology on ESXi with RDM to 4 * 8TB WD Red drives. I will be using SHR configuration. My question is, How easy is it to move the drives from esxi to synology at a later date. Is it similar to NAS to NAS migration (remove and insert the drives) or should I have to live copy the data? Thanks,
  6. Hello everyone! I've been using Xpenology on baremetal for the past 3-4 years on an old pc (Q6600 with 4GB ram) and now I want to build a new NAS with a more acceptable power consumption and performance. I use the NAS mostly for docker (Plex, cloud storage), backup, and possibly vm (at the moment this was not doable). One of the main point of the new build is having HW decoding for 4K movies, so I need QSV (I have a plex pass). These are my needs: Compact system (m-ITX) Low power consuption (TDP <35W for cpu) 4K HW transcoding (QSV) NVME cache 10 GbE (I have 10GbE internet at home xD) I have two builds in mind: MB: Asrock H270M-ITX/ac (~112 USD) CPU: Intel Core i5-7400T (~100 USD used) MB: ASUS P10S-I (~185 USD) CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1235L v5 (~100 USD used) All with: 16 GB RAM 2400MHz (~100 USD) be quiet! Pure Power L8 300W (already own) 4x 4TB WD Red (already own) ASUS XG-C100C 10GbE network card (~80 USD) Fractal Node 304 (~40 USD used) SAMSUNG 970 Evo Plus SSD M.2, 250GB (~80 USD) What do you guys think? I've read some discussion on the actual possibility to use NVMe cache on baremetal with 6.2, so I'm considering switching to ESXi. The 10GbE seems to be working with v4.9 test extra.lzma.
  7. Hi everyone, my name's John. I'm new to XPenology and looking to build my own. The parts I currently have are: Case: Fractal Design Node 804 Motherboard: ASRock Rack Mini ITX DDR3 1333 C2550D4I RAM: Kingston PC3-12800 4 GB (2 x 2 GB sticks) DIMM 1600 MHz DDR3 SDRAM (KHX1600C9D3K2/4GX) Power Supply: Silverstone Strider Essential Series 500 W 80+ Gold (SST-ST50F-ESG) Thumb Drive: Verbatim Store 'n Stay 16 GB Nano USB 3.0 thumb drive Other than drives, are these parts sufficient for a XPenology DIY build? If so, what steps do I need to finish building (I've seen a few videos that say go to XPenology.me and others say to go to synology.com for the pat file)? DIY NAS Objectives: 1.) Able to add drives or larger drives to increase drive size without having to move data off then back on or losing data (i.e.: start off with 3 drives and be able to add drives and changing the RAID from a SHR1 to a SHR2 configuration to have up to 2 drive redundancy without moving or losing data) 2.) Remote access from outside network for uploading/downloading/streaming to computer/android/ or ios device 3.) Assign users and passwords on a URL connection to share media without allowing downloading of media files (i.e.: video files, music files - with a possible log of when user logged in/files accessed, etc.) 4.) Media streaming to computers/PS3/PS4/Xbox 360/Xbox One/Boxee Box/etc. without access to other folders and files 5.) iTunes server - run iTunes in the background to allow home sharing within the home network 6.) Issues or errors notified via text/email 7.) Access via IOS app like My Cloud 8.) Use a UPS for the NAS build and have it shut down once battery has depleted 9.) Sync selected files/folders to a cloud drive or to another NAS 10.) Automatic weekly backup of all computers - keeping the last 5 backups before the oldest one rolls off 11.) A copy of each computers OS set up with all programs and settings for restoring to a new drive if needed 12.) Real time backup/sync of each computer Also, can a link be set up to access another NAS devices on the same network? Also can the NAS build be mapped on a Windows computer to act like a locally connected drive within my home network or outside of my home network and connected to the internet? Thanks, John
