  1. I think I'm using the 2 stock exhaust fans. But have a noctua fan on my CPU. I forget the details offhand, I know I posted them somewhere but can't find them. The temps might run a little high under extreme loads, but it's nothing the cpu and board can't handle. I also have a linux VM in there, and have compiled android without any overheating issues (nothing shut down).

Xpenology, and WIN 7 for WMC. ESXI is reporting CPU use @ ~225-250MHz, w/ an occasional spike to ~600MHz.. so basically the VM's are idling w/ little activity. I started up a plex movie that was transcoding for a few minutes, and the CPU temp toggled between 60-61C. edit: it's not a thorough test, but it's all I can do from work, teamviewing into desktop.   3. I have the same motherboard and case. I run ESXI on mine, and have multiple VM's using the hardware.
  4. 1) Copy new VMDK to datastore location of your choice 2) Shut down your XPEnology VM 3) Edit the XPEnology VM settings > remove old boot image disk 4) Add new boot image disk pointing to new VMDK of boot image. 5) Start your XPEnology VM
  5. DSM doesn't use smartctl. Synology uses their own proprietary tool called synodisk. I have no issues with smart data w/ my LSI 9211 controller that is passed through in an esxi VM.
  6. Netgear just added support for OpenVPN as well. Just enabled it on my R7000 router (was previously using synology DSM).
  7. don't waste your time. YOU CAN NOT USE IT... unless you just want to play around w/o any volumes. It has been this way for a long time after each new update, dismounted volumes. There most likely won't be any progress, because the team the releases xpenology doesn't release anything for betas... and who knows if they are even together, or will work on any future releases.

I think that modifying the actual bios you are running is probably pretty dangerous; the bios determines how to communicate with the underlying hardware, so modifying it could potentially break your hardware or just make it un-usable with the modification. I think a safer solution would be to stick with a custom bootloader, but instead of having the bootloader patch away all the Synology hardware checks it would emulate the hardware that Synology is expecting. It would be nice if the emulated hardware would only be used for the Synology Hardware Checks, so that any other functionality would get passed directly to the appropriate layer without going through the emulation. I don't have any experience with implementing what i described above, but sounds like what you are describing. That would be the best way of doing it.   11. A real synology isn't much different then what we do. Internally there is a little usb flash board that plugs into a usb header. On it is the bootloader. The only difference is it looks for specific hardware to make sure you're a real synology, which is what hacked on our versions. And the only reason it does that is because people make it work on other hardware, and synology is trying to prevent that.
  12. The USB is a bootloader only. It's not meant to be written to. In a real Synology box, internally there is flash storage on a little board that plugs into an internal type usb header. Most of the time when people have issues with their box not booting, nothing happening, ect, it's because this usb flash storage got corrupted. It's not intended to be written to. It just boots the box, and is what either greets you with the install wizard, or boots of the install on your disk array. When you create an array, it partitions each disk into at least 3 partitions. 1st one is DSM install - it's mirrored onto every storage disk in your box (not the usb flash). 2nd is swap partition - it's also mirrored on every storage disk. Partition 1 and 2 are basically RAID 1. Partition 3 is your storage array, which can be a few different RAID types depending on what you chose during the array creation, and the number of disks you have. Now you may be able to trick/hack the DSM install onto your boot disk... (some have done it). But it's not really going to do much for you, as DSM will still be installed on the 1st partition of every storage disk. The only way DSM will not partition a disk is either esata/usb (removable drives), which can't be used in arrays.

It's one the thing to not like a release for things that aren't working good enough, but there's no need to repeatedly complain on the forums, and piss off devs. Simply post once about your issues, and then alter what you are doing (another words stop updating to the latest version of DSM, if you have issues with the boot images). I personally don't use 5.2 at all, since there seem to be many things broken if you look at dmesg, and my system works great on 5.1.
  14. It's how LSI cards are. sda, sdb, sdc... ect, are not the order of the physical port numbers. They are the order the drives spool up and enumerate. You can't change it.
  15. I don't think you understand the issue. Your LSI card has 8 ports (port 0 to port 7), if put plug port 0 into slot 1, port 1 into slot 2, ... port 7 into slot 8. Put 1 drive in slot 1 and one in slot 8. Look in DSM and they will show as slot 1 and slot 2. It will fill the slots in DSM in order any drive is detected, regardless of their port #, or what physical slot they are actually plugged in. Everything I've read said this is the only way the LSI cards work. Also, everything I've tried supported this as well.
  16. I'm not sure you're following what he's looking for. He'd like (myself as well) for port 1 on the HBA to be slot 1, port 2 to slot 2... ect. LSI cards will give the sda label to whatever drive enumerates first, regardless of the port # they are attached to on the card. So every time you reboot your system the drives slots assigned to drives change.
  17. I searched for a while on the LSI drive order issue, and it's just how LSI does it. It's not OS related as far as what I've read. On 5.2, I just think it is broken.   20. Nanoboot bootloaders are for DSM 5.0 and below. The big question is what update did you apply? If it was something greater than 5.0, than you'll need to use the appropriate bootloader. I'm not sure how you'll figure that out if you are unsure, since you can't login to the box w/ your old root password.... maybe it is booting in an unconfigured state, and expects the root password that is based on the current time and date: 1st character = month in hexadecimal, lower case (1=Jan, … , a=Oct, b=Nov, c=Dec) 2-3 = month in decimal, zero padded and starting in 1 (01, 02, 03, …, 11, 12) 4 = dash 5-6 = day of the month in hex (01, 02 .., 0A, .., 1F) 7-8 = greatest common divisor between month and day, zero padded. This is always a number between 01 and 12.   22. Things I'm noticing: Hard drives won't sleep. I'm aware it's an issue on official synology forums, but it was working fine on previous VM on same hardware - prior VM started off on DSM 5.1, then was upgraded along the way as updates came in, to the latest 5.2 w/ working sleep. New one is with brand new hard drives - 5TB x 4. After boot takes a while before DSM web UI will let me log in - says it's busy. Seems longer than usual. Sometimes DSM drops my volumes after booting fine - proctection patch issue? Sometimes DSM will prohibit login to DSM web UI. Checking console reveals something issued shutdown.
