A few other things to consider regarding virtual v. bare metal installs: AFAIK, my understanding (and experience) is that with a VM setup, disks do not spin down. Wake-on-Lan doesn't work either. All of this means power usage is likely a to be higher with a VM (a VM will also need more memory as it adds some overhead).
