Edit what ever you want in the cfg, just test it before on a test vm; no point risking your data Personally I still use the old version, can't setup dsm 6 the way I like it. Tried to add a 1 Tb drive to the vm using RDM, not working. It says the drive is bigger than the availe space on a datastore (that contains the virtual disks created before). For some reason a few subnets that my internet provider is using can't access this forum; tried posting from xpenology.us but what I post from there doesn't appear here. So I have to use other ways to get here (proxy, vpn). I sent a pm to the forum admin but so far nothing.

Of course, the boot it's just for boot My initial reply on this matter was addressed to a user that allready added a second drive (ignoring the boot drive from count). After that second drive is added in dsm it's safe to remove the first one. Like I said, personally I see no reason to do that but every one is entitled to their own setup Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk

WHAT?! NO!! You can't remove the 8GB, this is the ONLY place where it is installed... Yes, after you add a new volume you can remove the initial one. Every time you add a drive in dsm you will notice that its missing some space (about 4.6 Gb on dsm6). That space is reserved for dsm, in case you need to remove the first drive or it crashes. So as long as you have at least one working volume you can remove all others, no matter the creation order, dsm will boot normally. This was the case at least since dsm4 (my first contact with synology) and didn't change now. PS: Just to be sure I tested right now, removed the initial drive (16 Gb in my ovf) and the vm started just fine from the other drive that I added after.

Why would you remove it ? Removing it should not create any issues, as far as I know DSM gets installed on all drives; but didn't tried it on 6 so far...

Leave that one alone and add another hdd from the webui; on that 16 Gb you install the apps ad the big one is for storage. I only changed from 8 to 16 Gb and didn't had issues, but I did that before booting and starting the DSM config.

Start storage manager, go to raid group, hit create. Chose the drive, the type (I used basic, single drive vtrfs); at some point drag and drop from left to right, next-next until finish. When you are done with that go to volume and hit create, using the raid group you just created. Repeat when you add other drive, if you have more drives and you want you can create a raid 1, 5 whatever, I like to keep mine simple, basic is ok to play around I guess you already figured out all this, but for some reason I don't get notification for new posts on some forums...

@ venno I tested the ovf again, it just works right after deployment, you don't need to change a thing on it, the boot disk is non-persistent. I deployed now the ovf and just started it from vsphere, http://find.synology.com/ worked for me. Tryed in other browser ? But if you want to add another drive you need the webui.

Check your router, you should see there all the clients in your lan. Or some network scanner app, to see all active ip's. Also install the webui, it's really easy. https://labs.vmware.com/flings/esxi-emb ... ost-client In any case, it should work. If the console is not completely black you have it running, if it's remaining empty after the start of the vm you need the webui to investigate. Edit If you installed esxi 6.0 update 2 HP custom image you should already have the webui installed, I think it's included. Go to https:///ui and check. If you have it update to the latest version before use. Edit 2 Try Nmap to scan your lan. https://nmap.org/ Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk

One other thing I noticed is the long time before you are able to login, about 3 minutes after I start the vm. If you try before that you get a message : system is getting ready, try again later. Maybe that's how dsm6 work's, I don't know. Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk

Not working for me; I copied the files on a datastore, imported the vm and tried to start it. It won't boot with SATA : Failed to power on virtual machine DSM 6-v10. Failed to open disk sata0:0: Unsupported or invalid disk type 7. Ensure that the disk has been imported. edit After I change the boot to IDE: Failed to power on virtual machine DSM 6v10. Failed to open disk sata0:1: Unsupported or invalid disk type 7. Ensure that the disk has been imported I guess that we need to convert the vm to properly import the disks. Edit 2: I converted the v10 to v10 and it works now; after conversion I edited the settings to make the boot non-persistent as before. Only now we see in storage manager the boot drive, becouse it is SATA now not IDE as before. update : And now we have 5 seconds to chose run or install at every boot.

I edited and removed the sound card, no use for it in hp gen8 Settings got saved this time; why did you made a 100 Gb hdd ?!? 16 or 20 Gb are more than enough for install... Not a big issue, but I wanted to use my ssd drive as datastore, and I only have like 30 Gb free on it. Thanks again, finally working on esxi Edit: What version did you converted ? From 12 to 10 or from 11 to 10 ? I want to try and make one myself, with a smaller install hdd. Edit2: I did it, from version 11 to v10, with a 16 Gb drive; it works, I tried this conversion yesterday and it didn't work, because the boot disk was SCSI not IDE I guess. Here is an ovf with only 16 Gb drive, no sound card, 2 Gb ram and 2x2 cpu. https://mega.nz/#!J4YV3ZxY!AGg7p4c_cgM5NRjWhvjHAhajoW9cLWSchZ806WA0PRw As posted above, after import enter vm settings and check the drives, IDE and non-persistent for boot and SATA persistent for the first drive; you can add a new drive (only SATA) now or later, after the config. Use webui to modify the vm settings and add drives, vsphere can't add SATA. Big thanks to oktisme and haydibe

Thanks; system is geting ready... it started; the vm cpu is 1x4 cores, changed in settings 2x2, settings not saved, but it works. I tried first to edit settings in vsphere - error, then I edited in the web ui but for some reson it didn't save the cpu.

I managed to convert the vm using vmware converter, directly to my host, it boots but always ask to migrate; tried various stuff, no joy for now. Maybe I'll try another conversion later, this one gave me 512 MB boot file. (thick provisioned)

Same thing, going to migration again; I give up. I'll just have to use the vmware player if I want to play with dsm 6. Thanks.

Using this I can chose to boot from iso, but it always goes to migrate page; I let it migrate 2 times (both options) and when it's finished and restarts it goes to migrate again.

here is the vm, just made it again I have no idea how to tell it to start from the iso after the install, I'll dig around... maybe to convert the iso to vmdk and then use it as a new hdd... at the moment I don't have something to quickly convert iso to vmdk.

    Working DSM 6

Yeah, I assumed that it will automatically boot from the ide drive (iso file). Next time I'll look for a way to tell the vm to boot from the iso. Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk

I had the iso on at all times, but after the install attempt I don't get the same screen asking for run or install. The screen is just black, nothing happens. Like I said, I'm going at it again later or tomorrow, if someone cares to help I'll start a TeamViewer session. What I know for sure is I have to use the Web ui to create the vm, that's the only way to add sata disks. From vsphere I can only add SCSI and ide. Also I have to chose vm version 11 for the e1000e network adapter. Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk

I give up for now, tried to create a new vm on my esxi setup. After install using the pat file it says wait for reboot. Waited 15 minutes, nothing happens. Tried both from vsphere and Web client, SCSI and SATA controllers, same for all. I'll try other things tomorrow if I have the time. Thanks again for the files and explanations. Thanks for the files and the tips; I'll try to make it work later today. I only hope that other forum members with more knowledge than me will try this, as I'm a beginner.

Thank you very much for this. I still can't boot on my setup, but that's my problem I run esxi on a hp gen8; I copied the vm, added a new hdd and no joy : "Failed to start the virtual machine. Module DevicePowerOn power on failed. Unable to create virtual SCSI device for scsi0:0, './Boot.vmdk.REDO_kF29hq' Failed to open disk scsi0:0: Unsupported or invalid disk type 2. Ensure that the disk has been imported."

Thanks I wish it was vm version 9; it is version 12 and can't use it on my esxi 6.0
