  1. just because this is coming up in Google: I have checked that my motherboard is set to use iGFX (not set to auto or any other setting) I have tried several commands via SSH to get the drivers downloaded/installed, but most of these seem to be aimed at Debian or other Linux systems I have completely rebuilt my NAS, including formatting the USB stick and all internal drives.
  2. I still don't have an answer for this. I have been searching everywhere, but it seems like this should "just work" once DSM is installed. I have tried to manually install the drivers, modifying files and even a complete wipe and re-install, but nothing works
  3. for those that find this post, I never found a solution for this. I tried running several commands to rebuild and connected drives to an external device, but no luck. I ended up biting the bullet and wiping the drives!
  4. I am trying to get Plex Docket set up to use hardware transcoding. I am missing the dev/dri folder and I can't find any references on how to get it created. I assume it is because there are drivers missing? when I try to create the Docker image it fails because this folder can't be found. any help would be appreciated I have a Plex Pass. DSM 7.1-42661 Update 1 Intel Core i5-9600K Tinycore Redpill loader
  5. I'll try to keep this short! We had a street-wide power failure yesterday. The power went off, came back on for around a minute, then went off again. This caused some kind of issue with my Xpenology system. At first I suspected the redpill USB wasn't working, as I had issues booting up into Xpenology. I was able to get the USB re-configured, and Xpenology recovered but now I have another issue. My volume reported a degraded status and wanted to perform data scrubbing, which i did and now it is reporting as normal. However, i had historically been using PetaSPace, and this reports as crashed. None of my shared folders are visible. I have tried various methods of repairing the drives, unmounting, and remounting, but nothing seems to work. Searching online only brings up articles from Synology, which don't offer much help. I even thought I might try and remove the volume from PetaSpace, but the option is greyed out. Is there a way i can either get PetaSpace to work again so my shared volumes are visable, or somehow bypass it altogether and view the shared folders (or at least the data within them)? I have around 27tb of data, with a total volume size of around 40tb. running redpil 0.8 with DSM 7.1
  6. Will probably go with something like http://www.biostar-usa.com/app/en-us/mb/introduction.php?S_ID=917 I may be able to get my hands on a Dell H310 SAS card and flash it to IT mode, then I can use SAS to SATA adapters and run maybe another 8 drives
  7. yes, adventurous. It took a little while to get right, but it has been running solid for almost 2 years now. Yes, backplane connector connects to a SAS 8087 to 8088 converter that mounts in one of the free slots. This then has an SAS cable running from Server2 to Server1 and connects directly to the RAID Card (LSI SAS9220-8I, not an HP card as I thought). So in essence, Server1 uses the B120i and the LSI card and the SATA port to give it the 9 drives. Server2 only uses the SATA port. going to order https://antec.com/product/case/vsk4000e-u3.php. I can get 4 drives in there initially, plus 1 of the SSDs. I am hoping a friend of mine is going to make me some sort of drive cage to fill the 5.25" bays so I can house another 5 drives in there. Probably going to use an i5 CPU with 16GB RAM and I'll get a new RAID card as well.
  8. Sorry, I should have mentioned that the volumes are called "volume 1" and "volume 3". I was actually able to sort of resolve my issue by recovering the data using the Linux method described on the synology support pages and rebuild the volumes. No, my N54L has been gone a while now, this in in 2x Gen8 Microservers, using the onboard RAID controller for drives 1-5 (4x 4TB WD Red, 1x 960GB Crucial SSD cache drive) and an HP PCIE RAID card for drives 6-9 (using the SAS connector of the 2nd server to connect to the RAID card). I also have a 250GB SSD in the 2nd server so I can still use it as a PC. I am in the process of getting rid of all of this and replacing it with a custom built machine that will hold all 9 drives (and have space for a couple of extras)
  9. I have a 9-drive Xpenology setup with 2 volumes. 1 of the drives failed in volume 3. Thankfully this was the a 2-disk SHR setup. The issue is I was using Peta space, and so my shared folders are spread across the 2 volumes. Now the entire system is read-only. I want to try and copy the data from volume 3 to volume 1, so I can remove volume 3 completely. Any ideas?
  10. That will explain it. It is SHR. I'm guessing there is no easy way of "converting" without losing my data Sent from my SM-G950F using Tapatalk
  11. Hi, I have a Gen8 running DSM 6.1.4-51217 Update 5. I have been trying to get Virtual Machine manager up and running. The package installs fine, but when I run it, it only allows me to select Volume 3 as the storage for the VMs. I am using PetaSpace to manage volume 1, which is made up of a combination of drives. Am i unable to use this volume for VMM?
  12. just FYI, I stated to receive "no disk space" error messages in download station before this happened. The disk it was downloading to has lots of free space.
  13. I noticed that a few of my apps were not running (download station, audio station, media server, photo station, proxy server, video station). When I try to start them I get the following error message: "failed to run the package service. Upgrading database. please try again later". well this error message has been present for over 4 days now, and whatever this upgrade is, it clearly isn't working. I tried to uninstall and reinstall download station to see if it solved the issue, and while the uninstall worked, I now cant reinstall because of the same error. Searching around has brought all sorts of solutions to freeing up some disks space (I have 3 volumes, one at 99% used (12GB free), 1 at 45% (600GB free) and 1 at 4% (950GB free), but other solutions involved OS rebuilds, modifying databases and all sorts of things. Is there a permanent fix for this problem?
  14. I have xpenology 5.0.4528 installed using NanoBoot 5.0.3.2 on a HP 54L. I have 1x4tb WD RED drive installed. I want to add an additional 2tb drive, but when I add it to the server, I can create a new volume but it shown up seperatly to my existing volume. is there a way of "joining2 these 2 drives together so they show as 1 volume?
  15. Does the eSATA work on HP 54L? I have an eSATA hard drive enclosure on order, but there are mixed reports on if this works or not. I want to be able to connect an NTFS drive and copy the data onto the internal drives, without the drive being added to the pool. In the future I may want this to be an option though. can anyone clarify how eSATA works on the 54L with Xpenology? I have DSM 5.0.4528 and NanoBoot 5.0.3.2
  16. I've not found a way to do this automatically, but I mount the ISO in windows using Daemon Tools lite, then use a DVD ripping tool to create the video file. I don't think I can create MKV but you can create other formats like MP4 and AVI
  17. when I used the cashback offer for my gen7, it only applied to certain retailers, so just make sure you check before you buy! I think most sales are starting now, but I tend to look for the refurb or open boxes stock that are Christmas returns. FYI ebuyer are offering the G1610T microserver for £165.24 after cashback. I'm not sure how Xpenology uses FAT32 disks, but if you are starting fresh it may be a good idea to format the drives anyway. using the xpenology format (ext4 I think) you can build the software RAID and drive pools.
  18. I have Xpenology running on the older Gen7 HP 54L Microserver, last time I checked you can pick one of these up for about £170 from amazon. the newer Gen8 is more powerful (and IMHO better looking) but costs significantly more. If you already have the hard drives then I would buy some extra RAM (comes with 2GB as standard, but will take up to 8GB) This will run Plex, but the CPU is not very powerful (2.2GHz AMD Turion II dual core) so if you are wanting multiple HD streams or a lot of transcoding, it may not be up to the job. If you just use your Raspberry Pi, then you should be fine. Only issue you may hit is that if your existing drives are formatted with NTFS, then Xpenology wont read them from an internal connection, and you would need a USB adapter. What I did was copy 1TB of stuff off of the 1TB hard drive I was using onto a USB drive, formatted the internal drive for Xpenology, then copied the media back onto the drive. I have ordered a hard drive caddy to transfer the rest of the data over. Have a look at Xpenology.nl as they have some user guides and things on there that might be useful
  19. I've been putting of replacing my SuperHub, mainly because at one stage there was talk of Virgin replacing it with the SuperHub2, but now that doesn't seem to be the case I think I'll have to look at an alternative. I still have some older devices that need G (a Wi-Fi security camera and the Wii), but I have looked at hardwiring both of these and then only using 5GHz (there are 2 phones, 3 laptops, a printer and a TV all on Wi-Fi and they all support N) I haven't looked into the custom firmware recently, the last thing I did was DD-WRT on a much older netgear router. Not sure I'll worry too much about custom firmware unless it brings some significant benefits in performance. I still need some more drives for the NAS, and a whole host of other things before I'm allowed to buy a new one
  20. I've been looking at this router too, I've head the Asus stuff is pretty good, but I haven't tried it with Xpenology
  21. I have a fresh install of Xpenology 5.0.4528 update2 on a HP 54L. The server is connected to an unmanaged gigabit switch, that connects to my router. The router I have is a Virgin Media SuperHub VMDG480. When I try to set up port forwarding using the EX-Internet app, I get as far as the final step, but then I receive a message saying that the maximum number of port forwarding rules has been exceeded. When I log into the router, and look at the port forwarding rules, there isn't anything there! I can manually add the rules into the router, but I guess without the corresponding rules set up in Xpenology, it wont work. How can I get around this problem?
  22. I saw the boot image and the DSM available on xpenology.nl, I haven't looked into it in much details, but I guess that this version doesn't work?
  23. that's great, thanks for having answers to my questions! how do I go about adding community sources to DSM? I was planning on using 5.1.5004 update 2 with nanoboot 5.0.3.2 (x64), I haven't seen many guides on this but they must be out there. a UPS is something I will look at, right now I have it connected to a surge protector/UPS, but there is not battery in to, and for the cost of the battery, I might as well get a new one. I've read something about the UPS drivers in Xpenology being a bit picky over the makes and models they support, not sure if this has changed with newer versions. like I said, I've read a lot, just need to collate and organise everything that's in my head!
  24. I have a HP54L, which I am about to turn into a NAS server. I have been reading lots of guides and tutorials but I have some questions regarding the setup of Xpenology on my NAS 1. am I amble to use different size drives? I currently have 1x4tb 1x2tb, 2x1tb and 1x500gb. My plan is to gradually upgrade all the smaller drives to WD Red 4tb. can I set up the NAS with my current setup, and then just swap the drives out when I get the new 4tb drives? any issues or things I need to watch out for? 2. I was planning to use the internal USB port with a 4gb USB stick to run Xpenology. will this work? do I have to remove the stick after boot? 3. are the updates "safe" to apply? or do I need to re-install the whole system? I was planning on using the newer version 5, as this is what I have been using in virtual box to test with 4. how do I add the community app sources to the system? do I have to download each app separately, or can I use the Xpenology interface? 5. I will be using the NAS mainly as a backup device and for Plex. I will be running Plex on separate hardware. is there a recommended setup for this? 6. I have a 5th drive in the 5.25" bay. I have the modified BIOS installed and set up. Does Xpenology need any additional configuration to see the 5th drive? 7. can Xpenology read NTFS formatted drives? 8. can I connect USB or eSATA drives to Xpenology? I don't want to add them to the pool, I just want to transfer data from them onto the NAS (I guess this is quicker then transferring it over the network? I have about 2.5tb of mixed files, both small and large) 9. What sort of protection do I need for the NAS server? antivirus/firewall/encryption etc. not really found a definitive answer on this! sorry if these have been asked before, but I've read so much old and new stuff that I have confused my self!
