  1. Many of you might also use home assistant and no more about how xpenology runs VMs. The last home assistant seems to have made a change that has affected the 918+ and DVA3221 but not DS1823xs.
  2. Yes I had been away along time and I came back and I saw people discussing this and wondered what ARC was. So its not a fork of this project? Is there any reason to use one over the other? PS u were right about your answer previous to question , I was just desperate and thought some smart people might steer me in some direction
  3. I have a google coral inserted in a PCIe slot and am trying to get it working for frigate in docker. I am running 918+ using ARPL lspci -nn | grep 089a gives something like this, device 1ac1:089a is listed although the first part is different 03:00.0 System peripheral: Device 1ac1:089a 1)What are my chances of getting it working using the instructions? @https://coral.ai/docs/m2/get-started/#2b-on-windows 2)The only other direction I can find is here https://xpenology.com/forum/topic/56198-coral-accelerator-with-dual-edge-tpu-pcie-docker/ and it states I have to compile the driver for my system is that correct? 3) A long time ago I compiled a driver for a camera and to get the proper make environment was problematic, dependency after dependency with certain versions required it was difficult. Has anybody done this and can they give direction for the google coral? thanks for reading
  4. Has anybody compiled the drivers that they can share . Getting the make enviroment together isnt been easy.
  5. Sorry for the newbieishness of this question but I have updated dsm before with tragic consequences. I just want to confirm the steps for updating to new DSM same model. 1)restart the computer to get to the options page config loader-> type menu.sh at the prompt and choose update menu 2)I am guessing from that option I have choices but I need to update everything under the update menu 3)I cant remember the workflow, do I then rebuild the loader? I also remember that it prompted me to download a file when I built the original is that going to happen again? I found the download odd anyways since I feel I had to access the web gui and give it the .pat file that downloaded manually from the website manualy to my laptop anyways? 4)the last step seems to be actually accessing the DSM GUI and updating from there. Is the GUI going to be fully functional and I can choose to update or is it going to be the one where I have to give it the .pat file. Do I have to worry about bootloader and DSM version ...I know there is 7.2 beta DSM out there now that I am not really interested in. Lots of questions. Once upon a time I updated Juns version and there was alot of consequences bc I didnt do it correctly lol PS I used @apriliars3 post as a guide https://xpenology.com/forum/topic/65408-automated-redpill-loader-arpl/?do=findComment&comment=342170
  6. I have 2 machines as mentioned in the title. The samba addon for home assistant works on the 218+ but does not work on my xpenology install. Both are clean VM's spun up for testing. I have also exported the working home assistant VM(samba works) from the 218+ into the xpenology and it loses its samba ability. I have attempted to use MacOS samba client also but it also fails similarly Description of the failure: Mapping the network drive brings a prompt for user and password. There is a long pause and then the prompt for user and password appears again? Then failure with the following attached message. In the log for the samba addon I can see that authentication actually succeeds? I have done my best to config both VM's the same. I may have one DSM configured differently than the other but I have poured through the settings and compared. Its expenolgy related. Thanks if anybody has any suggestions. I have always used the mounted files for configuration however I have setup workarounds
  7. Thanks for all the help I have set up the HP g3 sff 800 with an iocrest jm858 aliexpress description: IOCREST PCIe Gen3 x4 slot to 5 Port SATA III 6Gbp/s Non-Raid Controller Card JMB585 Chipset Support Plug and Play with 3 Cables. link: aliexpress jmb858 . It was half the price of my local equivalent Vantec which also seems sold out and hard to find. I can see the ports are set up different. Four ports are stacked on the aliexpress one whereas the Vantec has five seperate ports. Would this make a difference in performance? I am confused both cards are 4x but only aliexpress tells how many lanes. I googled a bit about trying to understand this but applying it while shopping for cards seems difficult. The aliexpress performance listings seem pretty good lol. Almost need a guide on reading the hardware itself. I used APRL automated redpill loader to install ds918+ on baremetal with one drive on the mainboard. I then installed the jmb585 card and a single hard drive on the card. It detected the new drive and I built raid 0 to test. So far so good. I would like to have 8 drives total which are wd80ezaz 11tdba0(shucked from enclosures) when I am done. The elephant in the room is where are the actual hardware will exist as the sff stands for u know what. I will probably migrate the hp board to a server tower where all the drives will fit. 2 power supplies can live there and I will use this gadget https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003157010708.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.5.21ef1802qxcpW7to jump the 800 ocz power supply that will spin the drives. Idk for sure what the final product will be but let the hacking begin
  8. Worked great on HP g3 800 sff baremetal with 918+ 1)What is the procedure with the pat files. Does aprl do this for us now or do we have to download base OS and or update file 300 meg vs 34 meg? and use synology assistant to install 2)do we still forego all automatic updates in the setup screens as updates will bork the system?
  9. Sorry off the top of my head you said really old system...is your generation of cpu supported by the platform your installing? just thought I would check
  10. Reading along for a couple of days. Would appreciate some guidance. I have run Jun's bootloader 6.xx for a couple of years in an old sandybridge sysem with 8 hard drives(onboard controllers). Setting up a completely new system with hewlett packard g3 sff with Intel Core i5-6500 processor(skylake), 32 gigs ram, IOCREST PCIe Gen3 x4 slot to 5 Port SATA III 6Gbp/s Non-Raid Controller Card JMB585, 8 spinners, extra power supply for spinners, and a google coral either pcie or usb which ever will come first. The new system serves as the majority of storage but I had planned also to run one VM which is home assistant which is what the current systems responsibilities are. Is there something I must do to include support for the disk controller card and further down the line possibly the pcie or usb google coral which will need to be passed through to the home assistant VM. I am open to suggestions on what platform to use also. I have an synology ds218+ with apollo lake that currently acts as plex stack. The media libraries are stored on the old system which will hopefully migrate to the new system bc the ds218+ old has room for 2 hard drives.
  11. Thanks so much for answering. Your definitely throwing me a life preserver here. Agreed The HP case is restrictive and I thought of migrating it to a server tower case I have but I believe I have done that once before and well that's sort of mechanical engineering problem but maybe I will get lucky...I could also buy/make an external HD rack. It would slave away in the Utility Room Salt Mines so it doesn't have to look nice(it will look organized). What is the minimum power supply suggested to run say 8 total 10 terabyte spinners? I might find a HP power supply in the bin at work or the recycling store or I could power the HD's separately with the OCZ 800 Platinum I have running the sandybridge. I thought I could add a 10gb NIC in here somewhere is that not correct? I do have parts for 10 gb infrastructure hopefully going into place. I would then need ssds to saturate that anyway I suppose. I just thought in the future I might have multiple people watching 4k streams. Thanks so much for the direction on the sata cards. I will post some screens shots and hopefully you can confirm for the first one? There is a definite price difference between the cards here at a local retailer VS Aliexpress. How should the m2 slot be utilized then? I have read that its not useful for an SSD cache for most of us. Is it correct the newer hardware would have any benefit over the sandybridge as a NAS? . As a separate issue I do wonder if transcoding with the skylake is worth it too. If graphics card were cheaper I might try something like truenas scale and a patch nvidia driver. Sorry I tend to overanalyze I have highlighted the important questions
  12. This post is getting a little bit old but I thought I might ask here anyway. I am looking currently looking for a sata controller card and the more I read the more I dont trust myself to make an informed decision. Mostly I am getting confused on when manufactures are cutting costs on cards hardware by having less lanes. Can somebody suggest a card JMB585 or ASM1166 I am in Canada. Im struggling with a new build over here. I am just going to head over to hardware recycler and see what i can dig up too if you need use case...or just ask me.
  13. oh for sure this will sit in the basement so it doesn't to look pretty I could even move the mother board from the HP to the old tower server that the sandybridge lives it...hacking up a reasonable home is not a barrier but the hardware needs to fulfill my requests in the opening post.
  14. Hello thanks for any input. I have read quite a bit. Thank you @IG-88 and @flyride for all the posts with useful information. I currently have 1) synology 218+(apollo lake) with 2 Toshiba N300 NAS 4TB spinners,16 gig ram, running DSM 6.xx 2) Xpenology i7 2600k sandybridge, ASUS P8Z68-V PRO(4 sata 6gbs + 4 sata 3gbs + 2 esata 3gbs ports) 16 gig ram(it think there is 32 gig but only recog 16), 4 WD80ezaz11TD-ba0 spinners, 800 watt OCZ platinum PS, 120gb vertex ssd running DSM 6.xx (DS3615xs) I was given by my IT dept at my hospital(I regularly dumpster dive for old hardware ala war games and they know me) an elite desk 800 g3 sff with an i5-6500(4core, 4 thread Skylake),32 gigs of ram,180 watt PS, It has 3 sata ports (I think 6gbs),1 M.2 2230 for optional wireless NIC, 1 M.2 internal connector for optional SSD drive,2 low-profile PCIe (x1),2 full-height PCIe x16, one wired as x4. My use case 1)synology 218+ : Plex stack in docker 2)sandybridge XpenologyNAS and Home assistant runs in a VM Network environment: Brocade 6450p 48 port enterprise switch(4 unlocked 10gbs ports and 48 gig ports). I'm trying to get cat 6a installed in my house but it's a challenge. I have been for a long while thinking about switching the sandybridge system to the elitedesk but I am not sure about exactly what hardware to get or even if I should bother. I would like to add the 4 drives currently in use and make room for 2 more spinners with room for more in the future The biggest barrier I think on the elitedesk is the lack of sata ports which the OLD Asus has in abundance. I have read quite a bit about expansion cards to add hard drives either spinners or SSD’s and I think this is probably where I need the most advice. I am getting confused between HBA, SAS, and sata controllers. I am also getting confused about what's going on the expansion card in terms of lanes and what's best. Here is what I have come up with after reading. https://xpenology.com/forum/topic/35882-new-sataahci-cards-with-more-then-4-ports-and-no-sata-multiplexer/ 1)M2 key slot sata expanders are bad 2)If I can find a cheap sas controller at the recycler/dumpster dive maybe try it even though it sounds iffy with 918+ (is skylake good enough to transcode do you think?) 3)I probably should get a sata/ahci card based on JMB585 but maybe ASMedia ASM1166 is acceptable now? I can't tell from the thread here https://xpenology.com/forum/topic/35882-new-sataahci-cards-with-more-then-4-ports-and-no-sata-multiplexer/ Here are some options I have looked at https://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX00120961 (I can't find the chip that the manufacturer used) https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004525617521.html chipset:JMB585 https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003346314019.html the 4x 6/10 sata port chipset:JMB582 Im open to any feedback ...sorry for the long post just trying to include all the details

    New server

@Polanskiman I would like advice on putting together a new nas. I have read quite a bit so I think my post will be well informed. I would like to know the best place to put such a question? Thanks
