As svb3000 mentioned, you don't want to use a hack as your production environment. You mentioned you would do a backup to USB just in case; to that, I'd say you should have a proper backup in general if the documents are important. You should have both a local backup (for fast restoring) as well as an off-site backup (in case of a fire.) A RAID 1 is not a backup. I've had my fair share of data loss due to drive failure in the past and have learned it pays to be paranoid about data storage.

Unfortunately, everything on this forum is x86/x86-64 specific and the SheevaPlug is an ARM based box so it won't work.

The newer versions have had issues with DHCP on my N54L, too. You'll have to plug in a keyboard and monitor to the machine and manually assign it an IP address. This can be done in various ways: Method one: Type: "ifconfig eth0 netmask up" replacing nasip with the ip of the NAS and netmask with your subnet mask. Method two: "vi /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0" Then change it to something like this: DEVICE=eth0 BOOTPROTO=static ONBOOT=yes IPADDR=10.0.0.5 NETMASK=255.255.255.0 IPV6INIT=off BRIDGE="" Changing the IP and netmask to yours.

I've run OpenVPN on DD-WRT, Tomato, and Merlin on the Asus RT-N16 and the Asus RT-AC66u and I've run OpenVPN on the N54L. You performance will ultimately be capped by your internet speed, so if you have a slow 1mbps upload, it won't matter what you use, you will have a 1mbps connection to your server. That being said, if your speeds are high, there WILL be a difference between the low clocked MIPS CPU's on the routers and the high clocked x86-64 CPU's on the XPEnology boxes. (People with the R7000, the Asus RT-AC56U, and all Asus devices above the RT-AC68u use a dual core ARM Cortex-A9 SoC clocked at a decently higher rate. This will likely perform somewhere in the middle.) From what I've read, the N16 at least will cap out at around 18mbps. The AC66 will do around 20MB/s. The ARM based CPU's, around 60MB/s. A decent x86 CPU can do much much more.

Their spec sheet (http://www.lg.com/us/burners-drives/lg-N1A1DD1-network-attached-storage) show it to have a Marvell 88F6281 which is an ARM SoC. Unfortunately, xpenology only supports the x86/x86-64 architectures.

I'm having a bit of an issue. Long story short, I had some issues with accessing the UI and saved the state using the CLI. I had to reboot the whole server, shortly after. After it restored, I have had an issue with VM's getting stuck in the "starting" status. I tried reinstalling and even uninstalling and installing an old version. As soon as I reinstall, all my VMs are still there and the two I tried to start up still show "starting" with all other options grayed out except the log, which I can provide on request.

That's right. It was a postgres issue. You can either delete your database and loose some data from some of your apps or correct the issue. I corrected the issue but I can't seem to remember what information I used. (There was no direct fix anywhere, so much as a mixture of information from different places.) If I can find that info again, I'll let you know.

Linux is case sensitive. Eth0 != eth0. Not sure if that's the issue, but it doesn't hurt to try.

rok1, I am not sure a whole subforum would be a good idea as it would be hard to search through. An indexible and searchable sticky post or website would be easier to search through and also to maintain. It would also allow one to list devices through categories (like sub-$200, "plex" server, etc). If something isn't listed, people would reply to the OP and the OP would add it then a mod would remove the post (or preferably, the OP would be a local thread moderator so that it could be done in one fell swoop without the possibility of someone missing something. There's also the option of a properly maintenance google docs "excel" sheet but those can get ugly... That being said, having a subforum does have its merrits. There wouldn't need to be a specific person maintaining the post/website and thus if that person disappeared from the community, updating the list would not stop. Also, each thread subject could be prefaced with [out of box] and [instructions] (or [oob] and ). Out of box would be for devices that just work out of the box and being that it's a whole thread, for those devices that require instructions, the poster could add full instructions on how to get the box working. I also thing that the posts should be locked right after posting for anyone but the original poster. To avoid confusion, there should also be a predefined format which all posts must take. But... all this is moot point if we don't have the moderators to moderate it to ensure the quality of the posts.

Do you have a cross over cable to test with between PC and server without router? What router do you have? (This can make a huge difference.) In fact, a buddy of mine gets similar speeds to you using an Asus RT-N16 running DD-WRT. I get 114MB/s on both my Asus RT-N16 running Merlin (and switch "nat" hardware acceleration back ported from the RT-N66u and enabled) or my Asus RT-AC66r with the same "NAT" acceleration enabled (CTF acceleration).

I have a N54L and just went from 5.0 to 5.2 without issues. But then I updated to Update 1 and now I can't seem to access my server through SSH, WebUI, or SMB. +1 to disabling rapid thread creation or adding more forum moderators. However, I do not believe disabling new thread creation is the way to go as that would lead to thread high jacking with new people trying to ask questions.

I don't believe XPEnology supports SSD Cache.

XPenology installs a copy of itself into every drive. The OS itself is super small. Unless you are only planning to use that 4GB drive as your only drive, it makes no sense to install it unto that drive.
