Raid5 - Can I start with 2 drives then add 3rd later?
DSfuchs replied to droiduser22's question in General Questions
This is possible and makes sense, as the second volume can be used for backup and recoverable data, among other things. The new drive must be created as a "Basic" type (RAID1 with single drive). -

That's not true, there's no getting away from SHR. You were lured into the manufacturer's trap. The hurdle to switch to another manufacturer has then been made as high as possible. -
Raid5 - Can I start with 2 drives then add 3rd later?
DSfuchs replied to droiduser22's question in General Questions
The truth is: The extremely slow RAID5 starts with 3 drives. It can be even drastically slower with the proprietary SHR and >=2 volumes. So only RAID1 and pairwise expansion to RAID10 is an option. Since the performance is excellent under RAID1, 4 and 10, cache drives are superfluous. They would also have to be enterprise SSDs with SLC chips, which would cost several thousand. Normal SSDs would wear out quickly, especially under RAID5. Pushing up IOPS, my favorites are there 2x additional Intel Optane Memory 16GB, M.2 2280, MEMPEK1W016GAXT. Less is more. Everything else just benefits the manufacturer's, and gives the user a fragile and slow system of their own making. The fastest and by far the most cost-effective is RAID4. I already have a write speed of >400MB/s with 3 drives, but this is also the case if one drive has failed. But since this would drastically reduce Synology's profits, the GUI does not offer it. However, it is very easy and quick to set up via the command line. When it comes to real data security, a system must have the ZFS file system build in. Synology is the wrong choice, as it is unfortunately not supported by them yet. -

-

The i3 CPU would consume far too much power. That's why I use motherboards/PCs with N3150/N3160 or N3710 CPUs. If you want to invest in DDR4 memory, get something from J4105 or J4125.
-
Hi Nico, were are you from? - which CPU is build in your NAS - are your hard discs encrypted - do you have still your original USB stick untouched I think the whole thing has nothing to do with Xpenology, but with the power failure and your defective CMOS battery. After the power failure, your BIOS was reset to the default because the battery couldn't hold the data. You can see this on the completely wrong date. Therefore, the boot process also has to be configured again from EFI to CMS. Then your old stick will start again. Otherwise, just write again. Best regards from Germany

Synology Plus series internal Flash/DOM repair and model-modding
DSfuchs replied to DSfuchs's topic in Hardware Modding
Hi, it is always a good idea to have a backup with the DOM-dump. Otherwise, if the DOM is defective, your license information would also be lost. If you do not need QC, you can keep your serial number and MACs. However, your 15+ must still be registered online with Synology so that "plus" software such as ABB can continue to be licensed online as 17+. Use a hex editor and calculator to adjust the new license information in the "vender" file on the 2nd partition of the internal flash memory to that of the donor, with the associated MAC addresses and checksums. The best way to relocate online the file is to copy it to the mounted second partition. But don't forget to unmount it. -
Then please send me a photo of the sticker on the back, with all relevant hardware information, as a private message. I'll then see what I have.

Don't forgett to umount after copiing.

After current testing under DSM7.1.1u6, the problem still exists.
