    - Additional comment: Had to fix SynBoot first here . My USB stick hasn't been recognised in DSM post update - haven't restarted yet to see if that fixes the issue

  3. I've never been in a position to update my software previously... I used to leave my 5.2 machine running for a year or so... I decided to rebuild the machine and use 6.2.3-25426.... Now there is update 2 released, I want to check on how best approach this.

My UI is telling me I can install the update... Trying this method I was told the file was corrupt and returned to the DSM.

Does anyone have a guide on the best installation process??

  4. Sorry to bump the thread but I want to give you a better understanding of my setup

    • Machine had been running 5.2 no issues. I wanted to have a fresh install using DSM 6
    • I reused the USB stick I had installed with 5.2 (I haven't formatted at all, should I, if so which format?)
    • I haven't wiped or done anything with the hard drives (should I?)
    • The chipset actually is Celeron CPU F1610T @ 2.30Ghz and 8GB RAM
    • USB DriveKey (C:) is number 1 in the boot order. Image here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/yF5HNHdaeL9fSpu4A (it looks like it tries to boot from USB, as the stick flashes orange)
    • I'm using Jun's official v1.02b and editing the grub with the correct vid/pid, serial number for ds3615, my machine mac address and I am doing so using a Mac terminal, all appears correct.
    • When booting the HP machine

I've just created a new loader USB (in windows) & checked it with disk utility in a MACOS VM & it's also showing as non bootable so I think that's a red herring.

Have you checked the HP's bios settings is set to boot from the USB?

    Thanks for checking...

I have done, yes. Everything was working with DSM 5.2 this morning. I wanted a fresh install and on DSM6, there is nothing on the machine I require so re-used the USB and followed the MAC installation instructions but I can't see to get it to boot. Would there be any other settings other that boot from USB I would need to change on the HP machine?

  6. Previously created bootable USB via a Windows machine with DSM 5.2 and been running fine for years. I want to do a clean install and with Jun's official v1.02b

I've followed the instructions here on creating an image on the USB device but I don't know how to make it bootable? Checking Disk Utility it says Bootable = no (I'm not sure how to update this)

I've currently used dsm916 and updated the grub.cfg but because the disk isn't bootable on the HP machine I get the error "The Non-System Disk Error or Disk Error"

    This is the diskutil:

    /dev/disk2 (external, physical):

       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER

       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *32.0 GB    disk2

       1:                        EFI NO NAME                 15.7 MB    disk2s1

       2:           Linux Filesystem                         31.5 MB    disk2s2

       3:        Bios Boot Partition                         4.2 MB     disk2s3

Anyone able to offer some guidance before I go hunting down a windows machine (which I don't have to hand)

Download the loader, unzip it and put the image file (synoboot.img) directly on the desktop.

1 - If your flash drive is plugged, unplug it.

2 - Open terminal. Issue the following commands:

    cd /
    cd ~/Desktop
    diskutil list

The last command should bring up the list of your drives. Below is what it shows on mine:

    TlMBP:Desktop Tl$ cd /
    TlMBP:/ Tl$ cd ~/Desktop
    TlMBP:Desktop Tl$ diskutil list
    /dev/disk0
      #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
      0: GUID_partition_scheme *500.1 GB disk0
      1: EFI EFI 209.7 MB disk0s1
      2: Apple_CoreStorage 200.3 GB disk0s2
      3: Apple_Boot Recovery HD 650.0 MB disk0s3
      4: Apple_HFS Funky 298.8 GB disk0s4
    /dev/disk1
      #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
      0: Apple_HFS Yosemite *199.9 GB disk1
                                    Logical Volume on disk0s2
                                    CC0A6E92-5D3B-4FF8-A35F-ACF567B573CD
                                    Unencrypted

Now plug your flash drive and issue the diskutil list command again:

    TlMBP:Desktop Tl$ diskutil list
    /dev/disk0
      #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
      0: GUID_partition_scheme *500.1 GB disk0
      1: EFI EFI 209.7 MB disk0s1
      2: Apple_CoreStorage 200.3 GB disk0s2
      3: Apple_Boot Recovery HD 650.0 MB disk0s3
      4: Apple_HFS Funky 298.8 GB disk0s4
    /dev/disk1
      #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
      0: Apple_HFS Yosemite *199.9 GB disk1
                                    Logical Volume on disk0s2
                                    CC0A6E92-5D3B-4FF8-A35F-ACF567B573CD
                                    Unencrypted
    /dev/disk2
      #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
      0: FDisk_partition_scheme *31.0 GB disk2
      1: DOS_FAT_32 41.1 MB disk2s1
      2: DOS_FAT_32 49.4 MB disk2s2

You can see my flash drive (31GB) now with the identifier disk2. Note that your flash drive identifier could be something else (disk3, disk4...) so don't just copy paste.

    Now issue the following command:

    sudo diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk2

You might be asked for your password. Here is what I get:

    TlMBP:Desktop Tl$ diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk2
Unmount of all volumes on disk2 was successful

Then issue the following command. Same comment: BE SURE TO USE THE RIGHT IDENTIFIER. There is no turning back on this one. If you mistakenly use the identifier of some other disk, it will overwrite it with the image. SO BE VERY CAREFUL.

    sudo dd if=synoboot.img of=/dev/rdisk2 bs=1m

    You should see this:

    TlMBP:Desktop Tl$ sudo dd if=synoboot.img of=/dev/rdisk2 bs=1m
    50+0 records in
    50+0 records out

    You are done.

If you want to access the content of the drive you have to issue the following commands:

Verify again your flash drive identifier. YES AGAIN. You will need the disk partition identifier this time:

    diskutil list
    You should get this:

    TlMBP:Desktop Tl$ diskutil list
    /dev/disk0
      #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
      0: GUID_partition_scheme *500.1 GB disk0
      1: EFI EFI 209.7 MB disk0s1
      2: Apple_CoreStorage 200.3 GB disk0s2
      3: Apple_Boot Recovery HD 650.0 MB disk0s3
      4: Apple_HFS Funky 298.8 GB disk0s4
    /dev/disk1
      #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
      0: Apple_HFS Yosemite *199.9 GB disk1
                                    Logical Volume on disk0s2
                                    CC0A6E92-5D3B-4FF8-A35F-ACF567B573CD
                                    Unencrypted
    /dev/disk2
      #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
      0: GUID_partition_scheme *31.0 GB disk2
      1: EFI NO NAME 31.5 MB disk2s1
      2: 0FC63DAF-8483-4772-8E79-3D69D8477DE4 15.7 MB disk2s2
      3: Bios Boot Partition 4.2 MB disk2s3

Note the EFI NO NAME partition with the identifier disk2s1 of the flash drive. This is the one we want.

If you are on MAC OS El Capitan or earlier then issue the following:

    mkdir /Volumes/efi
If you are on MAC OS Sierra then issue the following:

    mkdir /tmp/efi
(Since Sierra, /Volumes is no longer world-writeable. One needs to be root to create folders in /Volumes)

    Followed by:

If you are on MAC OS El Capitan or earlier then issue the following:

    sudo mount -t msdos /dev/disk2s1 /Volumes/efi
    or
If you are on MAC OS Sierra then issue the following

    sudo mount -t msdos /dev/disk2s1 /tmp/efi

Your flash drive is now mounted. Edit what you need and eject when done. If you need to mount the flash drive again issue the last 2 commands. Always beware of the disk ID.

I've followed these instructions and edited the grub file as per instructed... Do I have to follow any other process to burn image to the USB stick? I'm ejecting this and trying to boot HP server but I don't get the grub screen.

The USB stick previous worked with DSM 5.2 but was created on a Windows machine

    I'm trying to install on a HP proliant microserver g8 with DS916p 6.1 Jun's Mod V1.02b.img being renamed synoboot.img

    /dev/disk2 (external, physical):

       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER

       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *32.0 GB    disk2

       1:                        EFI NO NAME                 15.7 MB    disk2s1

       2:           Linux Filesystem                         31.5 MB    disk2s2

       3:        Bios Boot Partition                         4.2 MB     disk2s3

Every thing appears to be installed correctly

    Upon boot I get:

The Non-System Disk Error or Disk Error
