    Hello

is there a reason ice driver is not included in kernel 5? I tried SA6400 and it brings IGPU to Intel CPU, but without NICs.

    lspci -vv | egrep Ethernet
Product Name: Intel(R) Ethernet Network Adapter E810-XXVDA2

    lsmod|grep ice

    dmesg|grep Ethernet

  2. I have had very quick success with DSM711 via ARPL (while couldn't ever make TCRP work on bare/VM). ARPL flat and dynamic VMDK work same tho i still didn't figure out the difference. Important is drivers are all SATA, especially the first partition. I ran it on PC VirtualBox and QNAP VirtualizationStation.

    Performance notes:

On PC I noticed performance degradation more cores I've added. Boot got very slow, looking at \\.\pipe.

CPU performance is the same as full barebone, e.g. openvpn benchmark or openssl benchmark.

Virtual disk performance isn't top notch. PCI4 NVME will hardly beat 10Gbit on 50.000 passmark host, and top up 5Gbit on a 5.000 passmark host. Sad as I don't want to use RawDisk because NVMEs don't have SED, while DSM doesn't have FDE. Maybe ZFS dataset would work faster.

Hi to all! Maybe it will be interesting for you! I've made a script patching synocodectool and adding codec pack for Advanced Media Extentions for DSM 7.1.1 As a bonus I've included CH341 drivers (for me it's zigbee stick support). This script is not my workaround but a little help to include much information in one place. If it's interesting for your community, you're welcome! If not, admin please purge my message 😃

    1.) wget https://derbunov.ru/dsm_7.1.1_patch.tar.gz
    2.) tar -xvf dsm_7.1.1_patch.tar.gz
    3.) cd dsm_7.1.1_patch
    4.) sudo ./start.sh

For patching synocodectool you need to choose 1st item then the item depending on you app and again until complete.
Zigbee drivers are tested with DENVERTON platform only!
All credits are going to https://github.com/apriliars3/synocodectool-patch, @upais and https://t.me/xpenology_ru

Thanks. I've tried patches 1 and 2 on all components, reboot, and didn't see a difference (same feedback on Telegram yesterday, can't view it anymore). It didn't seem to index or thumbnail existing test files and AME reports the same. I can play HEVC in Edge browser in any NAS without HEVC extensions (DSM7 or QTS5) but not in other browsers. No thumbnails in VideoStation. Nothing from this list improved for me: https://www.synology.com/en-global/dsm/7.1/software_spec/advanced_media_extensions

i didn't progress since ^above didn't catch @pocopico attention.  The old mvsas indeed failed during boot so i use only the correct repo but the new mvsas isn't baked. But even without this driver, i'm in succesful installation loop.

So i focused on data recovery, which took me days. Found that DSM's BTRFS is full of errors, couldn't mount in Linux, but using some magic it could be read. In the process, i've lost incredible 3 flash drives (good quality like Extreme Pro). So not just the DSM failed by not loading sometimes (probably because of BTRFS errors - never exposed via scrubs), but then 1 HDD full of BTRFS errors and overwritten by syno install, same with NVME, and then there's RAID which doesn't load on Linux(!) at all but i'm ok to lose it.  And then the flash drives decide to quit right now. The rp loader flash drive locked itself read only - end of service. The Sandisk drive said "ALERT no more reserve for bad sectors" - please replace. The Lexar drive starts having big write hiccups, after just few GBs of service, and was already refunded. I'm left with the final offsite backup drive which has all the data i need. Hope it doesn't fail in the upcoming days.

Desperate to get back online i was exploring other options, Truenas detected all drives but failed to boot 2nd time  - middleware didn't load, network disconnected, apparently configs lost.  And it was running from yet another unique flash drive. I must be lucky:)

If you are simply trying to recover your data? I think open media vault can read the synology disks, at least that will give you the ability to recover your disks. I think that what your trying to do. Google open media vault, and search here, you will find it mentioned that OMV can read the synology drives without data wipe.

tbh i don't see any good mention. but i'd do it in any system with mdadm and btrfs. i just wonder why DSM7 gets repeatedly installed ok, and after reboot it's in "uninstalled" state and asks for PAT again. (hope it's not because MAC changes -> PORT changes each time and the web render waiting 10min times out).

update more... after reboot plugged in all the drives again... sataportmap back to 6, hotplug 1... the 2nd drive is now back... the 3rd drive shows up in slot 5 and is flagged as critical... now this drive has zero bad sectors... has the lowest number of powered on hours... comes back with a clean smart test... drive 1 on the other hand has 336 bad sectors yet is marked as healthy, hours also slightly higher than drive 3 aka 5.

could this mean that something in redpill is mixing up the smart test results?

my story better.. i had old USB boot flashdrive in, the initram on the old one was overwritten during the /mnt/sdb3 mess consisting of dozens of attempts to make a build without error. Fixed that, DSM7 didn't show up and no connection.

Later noticed (LOL) my storage isn't supported that's why DSM7 didn't boot, probably checking pci (I wouldn't mind to boot without RAID tho).

I added the drivers from Jun loader to CPIO, which was the easiest part of the process, and only then DSM7 showed up via NIC.

Also was chaging Sataportmap 41 to 1 hoping to isolate RAID temporarily, without realizing i shifted the second controller to be the first one. So another installation (which always ends in success and then asks for another installation) got 1 member of RAID overwritten instead of SSD, and now getting "SATA port errors 2,3,4" and no loader works.

Anyways, this can't be fixed even with original Syno unit I wanted to buy today just to try to recover the mess, i will need to do it myself :) If I hide SSD and clean RAID member1, might rebuild the RAID:)

Someone mentioned disconnectinng the disk array and installing a fresh copy of DSM on a blank drive and then connecting your array back. Is that the best way to go about getting back online?

Did you figure this out? I often have no connection at boot. There's a ping for 3 seconds than ALL 3 types of NICs are killed. Didn't even update. Sometimes it works after hard reset (the only to reset is power off, causing some BTRFS corruptions), and then i doesn't for days.

  10. Don't know about HEIC (noone uses this format) but haven't seen HEVC playback in web browser, or DS Video Windows app.

You might be lucky for 1 item, but there's a complete checklist worth of checking:

    https://www.synology.com/en-us/dsm/7.1/software_spec/advanced_media_extensions

    also since 7.1

Starting from Advanced Media Extensions 2.0.0, users must sign in to their Synology Accounts in DSM to install HEVC and AAC codecs in the package, which allows for the playback of certain file formats in multimedia packages and Surveillance Station.

  11. Is this guide for the upgrade from 6.2? Previously there were 3 guides, now there're 2.

A remarkable difference was in this line:

    ./rploader.sh clean now; rm -rf /mnt/sdb3/auxfiles; rm -rf /home/tc/custom-module; ./rploader.sh backup now;

If I modify config (USB, S/N), should i rebuild or just save the file? I'm stuck at "Booting the kernel" with IP unavailable. [20min later]  Oh I got it by connecting back the bond. Likely advice - if you have bond of 2 cables, it won't work in Tiny OS, and vice versa in DSM. (Update: it seems that finally 1 cable worked but must be cable Nr.1). Also need to remove other USB devices during the setup.

I wonder if the bootloader could display something meaningful, like system info if not terminal:) Really sad to have a deaf barebone :)

  13. All things you wanted to know about notifications but you were afraid to ask:

You can set up both events in the Task Manager.

    1) Notify via DSM UI notification, this will however not be pushed to the mobile app for xpenlogie:

synodsmnotify @administrators System "System is shutting down"

    2) For official DSM email delivery, create your own notification in Notifications\Advanced:

    https://www.beatificabytes.be/send-custom-notifications-from-scripts-running-on-a-synology-new/https://www.beatificabytes.be/send-custom-notifications-from-scripts-running-on-a-synology-new/

    then send:

    /usr/syno/bin/synonotify Shutdown

    3) For instant Pushbullet notification, set up notifycli package and run:

    /volume1/@appstore/nessentials/bin/notify-cli -c pushbullet -p <PushbulletAPIToken> -d <DeviceIden> -t "NAS Alert" -m "System shutdown" --sender <SourceDeviceIden>

    4) To get literal audio notification ("System shutdown"), get a free TEXT to MP3 audio file, and play it via:

    /volume1/@appstore/AudioStation/bin/mplayer /folder/shuttdown.mp3 > /dev/null 2>&1

BONUS: you can have a script that parses all DSM emails, and plays according text via USB speaker

    5)  To send email without any configurations, no questions asked (if you're running MailServer):

    echo -e "From: NAS <nas@domain.tld>\nTo: nas@domain.tld\nSubject: NAS alert\n\nSystem shutdown" | ssmtp nas@domain.tld

BONUS: you can automatically forward the email to your SMS if your telco provides such service

  14. udev rules are highly unreliable here. the only event is "change" and it's unreliable, also giving you no indication whether CD was inserted or removed. i've digged as much info as i could but it's really in horrible state. so the only way to kinda make it work is to keep shooting eject -a to it just to keep the lausy event coming, and be creative in a handler script, as written in the first post and evolved since (tho never reaching 100% success).

  15. you provided write test result, and included the advertised speed in the screenshot. and it matches. nothing to write about here:)

"my NVMe on windows easily get 1000 MBps" it means not a properly executed benchmark. No drive will be faster than specified, even if it's shortly masked by cache or something like ASUS RAM disk. NVMe drives can have speed of 0.5GBs to 7GBs. You drive is too old to be shining today. 951 successor model is 2.5x faster, 980 is another 2.5x faster despite small capacity.

  17. this is one frustrating feature i could never fix. There's no hibernation on my Ds918 image, drives spin up as soon as i spin them down manually (hdparm). Meanwhile electricity costs explode, my electricity provider bankrupted, and the drives which are needed for 1hour a day, make noise reminding me of this every day, just like the main fan makes horrid noise (unfixable issue on HP Gen10 thanks to weird fan setup, i've burnt one server playing with cables/adapters/regulators).

surprising to see someone can spin down disks, i'd believe a complete hibernation is possible (not in my case), but how you can spin down disks on live system with / mapped to the RAID1 (md0)?

the good ole' trick with installing on one drive, then add raid drives doesn't work as DSM will expand on all drives as soon as it detects them.

i have 2 standalone drives and 4 RAID drives, so i could still have a "system RAID" active if i shrinked the system RAID(+swap) from 6 to 2 hdds. but i worry DSM would complain. i'd have to also create a dummy allocation there to make sure no RAID fits.

the fix above didn't work. i remember very well drives couldn't spin down on an empty installation either.

all i am reduced to now is read the bad advices how running drives 24/7 is 'healthy' (a hoax that spreads on internet like "BTRFS is not good for RAID").

QNAP has some nice cpu and hardware boxes but there OS Sucks !  QNAP box with Synology DSM software yes ! Would be nice someone would build a NAS software similar to DSM... Xpenology Rocks ! but these up dates are a killer to some. Also running OMV, TrueNas and FreeNas, 1 Qnap box. Just my 2 cents...

Yes, it's not about chip shortage, but greed. They always put the outlet hardware inside.. Really old discounted junky chips, slightly faster than router chips. That's why i will not buy their box.

XPenology is milkyway better than Freenas, which is way better than OMV/Xigma. I do love technicalities about Freenas - jails, native FDE encryption, TCG OPAL support, better NFS and Samba with "Previous versions" support. In DMS i'm getting lausy FBE encryption which cripples tons of functionality (can't replicate some; can't hyperbackup some; can't encrypt emails; Drive is eating disk space because BTRFS snapping doesn't not work with FBE etc etc), i'm forced to use DuckUSB to type TCG password otherwise emails incl. plaintext passwords (yes!) are naked. But I couldn't fix it on their box. Absolutely wouldn't consider them for business based on my experience (there's more and more... horrible design choices).

But.... these technicals are of ZERO concert for the home users. Users are happy to launch Photos on every single device (mobile, tablet, TV, PC). 20 Android apps incl. strong Surveillance. Meanwhile all other NAS solutions have ZERO apps. There's NextCloud with a filesharing app, but overall super weak solution. So without DSM, i've nowhere to go. Probably i'd go Qnap.
