  1. Blah .. Active Backup for Business is definitely the problem. It seems as soon as a backup starts network goes down. I can copy large numbers of files over SMB .. so network seems up. Frustrating, as Active Backup DID work for awhile. Not sure what changed and I hate to switch backup software.
  2. Thanks jensmander and bluesnow for your input. I don't give up so eventually will figure this out. I'm a software developer of nearly 30 years (most recently .NET) so spend a lot of time researching solutions. But networking and hardware is not my specialty. I managed to build a Plex server on top of proxmox and an xpenology server, each with a 12 bay enclosure full of two terabyte drives totaling 48 terabytes. I'm ripping all my movies and backing them up (along with other PC's on network). Along the way I upgraded to Netgear Nighthawk router which I got from flashrouter.com with DD-WRT pre installed and a VPN with PureVPN.com. I use Kodi on an Nvidia Shield with a Plex backend using plexkodiconnect plugin. Finally I own my own cable modem instead of renting from cable company. Let's just say, I've come a long way and it's been a journey. I'm a Microsoft guy, not linux ... so all the more a challenge. It's not conclusive BUT, I have not had any problems after I uninstalled the Active Backup Client from problem PC. Before I uninstalled I unplugged network cable from xpenology server .. again no issues. Or I can leave xpenology server shutdown. Note that Active Backup continues to run on xpenolgy server, it just skips backup of PC waiting for reconnect. The plex / proxmox server continues fine as well and is accessible form said PC as well. As suggested I copied a nearly 200 GB folder of nearly 200,000 files to the server from PC and back. No issues. I have many devices. I have configured a number of them with static IP's which put outside the routers DHCP range and also reserved the IP. I read somewhere this isn't needed and MAY cause issues. I could try removing the reservations (or putting them in DHCP range). My router: 192.168.11.1 / 78:D2:94:BF:15:D5 (LAN), 78:D2:94:BF:15:D6 (WAN), 78:D2:94:BF:15:D7 (Other?) DHCP Start to End IPs 192.168.11.100 to 192.168.11.149 Static Leases (I should verify matches actual device .. I entered all these after configuring static ip on device) printer : 192.168.11.11 / 00:1b:a9:ca:c4:d1 router: 192.168.11.1 / 78:D2:94:BF:15:D6 dawn (nvidia shield): 192.168.11.32 / 00:04:4b:4a:a1:0f marantz-avr (receiver): 192.168.11.99 / 00:06:78:1F:46:75 homer-remote (harmony remote): 192.168.11.97 / C8:DB:26:09:27:47 vidia (Plex VM on proxmox): 192.168.11.152 / A6:FA:10:52:D8:1D lilo (xpenology server): 192.168.11.21 / 0C:C4:7A:12:0C:09 stitch (proxmox server): 192.168.11.31 / 00:25:90:F5:68:D6 stitch-IPMI: 192.168.11.24 / 00:25:90:F7:00:EE *IPMI is the Intelligent Platform Management Interface which can be used configure server hardware before OS is loaded. In addition I remember setting a static IP on the following: (I need to look up / verify) lilo-IPMI ??? / ??? .. need to look up Areca-lilo (nic for one hard drive enclosure) 192.168.11.23 / ??? Areca-stitch (nic for other hard drive enclosure) ??? / ??? And then there are all the DHCP (mostly wireless) devices. - At least half a dozene i-devices (phones, pads, watches) - three or four smart tv's - 2-3 laptops and/or PC's - two to three rokus - two amazon firesticks - a few others I may be missing It might be time to install Active Backup again and see if problem returns. Maybe there is another PC (bare metal) backup program. Maybe there is something else I can try ...
  3. Let me try to be more clear. There is something on my xpenology server that is causing internet to die on my PC. I know this because I can power down the server and all seems fine. Sometime shortly after loging on to the DSM via Chrome on Win10 I lose internet connection on the PC. It's fairly consistent. I'm not sure if it is related to Active Backup for Business which I have installed on DSM and client on my PC so that it gets backed up. Seems a likely place to start. Internet does eventually return. Perhaps when the backup is over? Need to do some more testing. I have four packages installed: - Active Backup For Business - File Station - Universal Search - Hyper Backup The first three want to be updated. The last I stopped as I'm not using it. Some data from Info Center: Model name: DS3615xs DSM version: DSM 6.1.7-15284 I have auto updates off .. and will NOT update unless via instructions on this forum. I tried Active Back of PC while continuously ping google.com. Only took 5 minutes this time as prior took nearly three hours. But it completed without killing internet tonight! Last night as well as other nights I can't stay connected more than a few minutes. Rebooting is only way to recover (internet troubleshooter, etc does not work) but logging back on only repeats with internet dying again. So for now I'm holding my breath but I doubt this problem is gone. P.S. It is an almost clean install of Win10 also. I do have Webroot Secure Anywhere running and Malwarebytes trial. The later I'm removing. Who knows, can't rule out something foobar with the PC (yet).
  4. ok. so still happening. Internet is down. Reboot is only thing that fixes. Within a minute or so after reboot internet is down again. I unplugged LAN cable from xpenology server before reboot. Seems to be working now. If it makes a difference, I also have a plex server (on proxmox). But it sits idle and does not seem to affect anything. Next I'll plug the server back in and see if problem returns. The uninstall active backup from client PC. There must be a logical explanation. Any help is appreciated very much!

  6. Hello. It seems my internet (and LAN connection?) on PC that I connect to DSM with dies shortly after connecting to DSM. Other devices on network seem okay. I have a Netgear Nighthawk R7800 X4S AC2600 DD-WRT FlashRouter. I installed DS3615xs 6.1, Jun's Mod 1.02b and extra 3615 - v4.8 I have server set to static IP. I also got Active Backup for Business working on DSM and 54 bit client installed on Win10 PC having issue.
  7. Progress! I had to replace the extra.lzma file (with version 4.8 for 3615) ...
  8. Finally connecting to DSM (again) .. and it detects no disks. I have a 16 drive enclosure connected to supermicro board via areca 1680 adapter. I've tried all disks in pass-through and also JBOD mode (I guess there is a difference). There is no obvious HBA mode which I assume JBOD/pass-through is equivalent. BIOS of supermicro is set to have SATA ports in AHCI mode. There are no drives connected to mb so not sure if it matters. There are two COM ports and I tried enabling the second one (first is enabled by default). The 16 drives are recognized by controller and displayed at boot time. I could create a hw RAID .. but I don't think that is recommended with NAS. Hooking a drive up to mb would work but don't have 16 ports! I could put a single SSD on mb and then try to add the other 16 after install. What to try next?
  9. Okay .. thanks. Makes a lot of sense. I switched back to default DHCP in BIOS ... AND switch LAN ports. I only have two and figured both were Intel .. maybe but it makes a difference! Now I'm getting "No hard disks" on the DSM browser based setup. Might be because of my enclosure or adapter setup. *Sigh*.
  10. I've had starting over a few times, this time using the Xpenology Tool V1.4.2 I have a SuperMicro server XDRi-F with one Xeon CPU and second CPU vacant. I have Arcea 1680xi-8 adapter connected to a Sans Digital enclosure with 16 2T drives in pass through mode. I'm using Jun's 1.02b loader (without MBR?) for DS3615XS. I followed instructions exactly, entering vid, pid, s/n, mac and writing modified img to usb. It boots fine but no matter what I do I can not connect using web to complete install. I know what the IP is .. I've set it to static in BIOS and can ping it fine. But I can't connect using ip http:\\192.168.11.21:5000 or locate using find.synology.com. The Synology Assistant does locate it and has correct MAC and S/N .. but an impossible IP that is not on my network (169.254.224.201 DHCP). When I ping that IP I get a General failure which is different than the usual "host unreachable". Seems like there should be a simple answer ... please help and thanks in advance.
  11. So I tried DS3615xs with Juns 1.03b and 1.01. But those could not find box on network. Yes, I have an intel nic. Tried the Synology assistant too. So went back to Juns 1.02b where I was least finding box. But that no longer works. The assistant found something but it was not the right ip and could not connect. So what happened to my network? I can see mac and ip on my router (but can not ping).
  12. Yes. I thought of that. So to start over I had to remove volumes on SSD on another machine and try again. Same error after being careful not to install latest. Do I need to reformat usb stick too?
  13. My bad. Can't type either. I meant I'm using DSM_DS3615xs_15217.pat . Thanks for quick reply!
  14. Hello. I followed the tutorial to install DSM 6.1.x using Jun's loader 1.02b. I'm using pat file DSM-DS3612xs_15217.pat. I updated grub.cfg with USB vid, pid, s/n mac as described. I'm going to baremetal supermicro X9DRi-F mb with single Intel Xeon E5-2630 V2, 2.5GHz. I'm able to find NAS on network connect and begin install but after I select the pat file I get the error "You have to use an installation file of 6.2.1-2384 or later. (10)" What gives?
  15. Hello, I'm a Microsoft .NET developer and have had a Microsoft based server for many years, first the now dead Windows Home Server and now a Windows 2016 server. I use it for backing up my home network .. all windows machines. It's great as it supports bare metal restore as well as file level incremental backups and also dedup. I've been working on adding a local media streaming server and after some trouble decided to go linux route. I now own two Sans Digital enclosures with 16 two terabyte drives each, and a couple Supermicro servers. The idea is to replace my Windows 2016 server and add another server to act as my media server. I've decided on Xpenoplogy for my backups and a ProxMox server to run Plex. I will run Kodi on an Nvidia Shield TV with a proxkodiconnect plugin. I hope that Active Backup on Xpenology will do everything my old backup did. If not Bacula might be an option. Should be fun getting it all to work!
