  1. I like to have the option, the initial build will be booting off USB, 4 x 4TB drives as primary media storage, I have some 2TB drives lying around that I can also slot in there, they will eventually be removed and replaced with whatever the budget can afford, prob more 4TB or maybe 8TB drives, and this is where I like the SHR idea, I can add them to the same volume. If this was ZFS I would have added all these bigger drives into a 2nd separate volume of course. How do I get access to SHR-2, I did the /etc.defaults changes to get SHR available, but did not see SHR-2 anywhere as a option. G
  2. Not to worry, I know about the assistant, there is 2, a local application and then there is find.synology.com. Just thinking this should/could be something easy to implement with allot of value. G
  3. A option could be to deploy ESX or VirtualBox and then do XPEnology as a VM, that way any subsequent HW upgrade/moves later become allot easier. G
  4. The issue Is I'm running Plex primarily, I'm migrating to XPEnology, and I'm trying to decide on how I'm going to deploy it (PMS on the XPEnology), and wanting to hear what peoples experience comment is, to go Native or PMS inside a Docker container. I"m not looking at fixing my current issue on the current NAS, G
  5. On the Netgear My client devices use to loose connectivity, at times it required me to reboot plex app, at times it actually required me to reboot the NAS also. I looking at both deployment methods at the moment, 90% of the usage of the NAS will be as a PMS, with additional file storage for photos, music software (Generic NAS duties). Have other issues.... media not playing via Apple TV, but those are better left for the PLEX forum, although also sometimes solved by a reboot. G
  6. So at the moment I'm preparing to move off my NetGEAR ReadyNas RN102 onto a XPEnology build. On my NetGEAR at the moment Plex is installed natively as a package. Have been having problems with Plex and it has required me having to reboot the NAS. So looking at the new build, on the one side I like the idea of installing plex in a Docker container, as I can then simply reboot the container, on the other side, why complicate things. Experience/comment. G
  7. Hi all Just starting out on Xpenology, originally was planning on buying a Synology... and that was primarily because of the SHR/Btfs combination. After installing (for now playing around in a VirtualBox VM to get familiar with the features, until I get my HW and build the actual unit, still deciding if it will be Bare metal build or a Virtualbox build). I created the Volume1 over the 4 drives I configured, immediately realised that this is being done on the previous steps RAID device created, at which time I struck me that this was not SHR. My host will initially have 4 x 4TB Seagate Ironwolf drives, with the plan of expanding with another 4 drives later, that might be 4TB drives, it might be larger. If they are also 4TB, no problem. if they larger... waste of space. Whats the general experience/feeling with SHR, discovered it's disabled by default on XPEnology. G
  8. Hi Hi guys, don't know who is responsible for the boot loader, just a suggestion, request... Any chance the boot loader can be made to display the IP address pop the machine it is running on after starting, I know you can use find.synology.com, but sometimes this does not work, sometimes you're in a network environment where you running Xpenology as a VM and it's on a DHCP assigned network and you're not allowed to IP/MAC bind. I'd like to start my Xpenology VM at work, and work on it a bit, but can't MAC bind IP address. G
