  1. I can't remember which modded BIOS I have put on when I first got the N54L, but the CMOS battery gave up finally and I lost all the BIOS settings. So I decided to start from scratch to rebuild it. I saw several modded BIOS by googling around. Anyone can suggest one, which will also support the 5th drive? Currently I just have loaded default in the BIOS.
  2. I think the issue is my BIOS battery, it finally gave up after all those years. How do I close this thread?
  3. I encountered a very strange problem when trying to fresh install the DSM 7.1.0 onto N54L. I followed the https://xpenology.com/forum/topic/62221-tutorial-installmigrate-to-dsm-7x-with-tinycore-redpill-tcrp-loader/ and it stuck at Step 8. After I type in the "exitcheck.sh reboot", it rebooted, but GRUB Menu ONLY shows "Tiny Cony Image Build", the other two options are not showing at all. Here is some background about the N54L: I have it running 6.0.X for a long time, and it has a USB 3.0 PCI card installed. I want to do a fresh install, and doesn't care about the data on the HDD (already backed up). I only connected a SSD to the 6th SATA port (the one was originally used by the DVD drive) I tried different USB drives, different versions of the broadwellnk-7.1.0-xxxxx. Did I miss something, or is there any additional BIOS config that I need to do?
  4. very nicely written steps. I followed this and got my second Xpenology machine working. A few notes, from my build: Dell Inspiron 580 motherboard with i3-530, with 10gb ram. ASMedia 1064 4port SATA expansion card with PICE interface. Several old HDD/SSDs. I can only get the broadwelllnk-7.01-42218 working, the 42661 does not work. During the install, it says the expansion card has 24 ports (LOL), but some ports (can't remember what the number, but I believe it said 7~10) are bad. I selected 6 during the satamap config. And after the install, it shows there are 12 driver slots, 1~4 used by the motherboard HDDs, and the two HDD connected with the expansion card as 8 and 10. Don't understand it. It reports both my old PNY XLR8 Pro SATA SSDs as critical. Seems like some kind of compatibility issue. the two old SSDs are in good shape. running fine under Linux/Windows. The same old age Plextor M5Pro SATA SSD working fine. So does the OCZ ARC100.
  5. Have been running the 4.x version with 5 HDs for more than 1 year. Decided to upgrade to 5.2 version. This is what I did and it seems I got some problem with add the HDs back to the system. XPEnoboot 5.2-5592.2 1> Back up all the data on HDs (5 total) to the external. 2> Shutdown. 3> Remove all the internal HDs (5 out of 5) 4> Format one of the HDs to be used for the system and packages and put it back into the N54L. 5> put in a new USB 3.0 PCIe card. 4> Prepare a new USB. 5> Boot up from the new USB. 6> Use Synology assistant to search the system. And install the pst, set up the address etc. 7> Reboot. 8> Up to now, everything works fine. System works smoothly, no problem at all. 9> Use the download pat files to update the system to update 2. 10> Shut down the system and put in the other 4 HDs. 11> During the boot up, a lot of errors and then execute error, won't boot up. 12> Tried to put in the HDs one by one, same error. Anyone can help? Have no idea why.
  6. Currently I have the 4.1.2668 running on 54L. Is there a way for me to upgrade to the latest 5.0.xxxx without loosing my data? I have 2 RAID 1 running on the system and an additional 250G(the stock HDD) hooked up with the optical bay. Unfortunately, I do not have enough external HDD space to back up the data. A Step by step instruction will be really appreciated, I've read the board for the whole night and haven't figured out a way yet. big big thanks.
