  1. I actually think it has to do with coding Synology puts there on purpose to prevent lower end NAS from transcoding 1080p even though it is physically possible. One, they might not want the user experience to be bad if it takes a long time on i3 and two I bet they want to force people to spend more money on a higher end model if they care about 1080p or 4K.   2. I have 6.2 on 3617 just not 6.2.1. And I can answer question #2.... when it comes to transcoding, the 3617 DSM can transcode in higher resolutions than 3615. When I used 3615 Video Station for example would only transcode most videos up to 720p even though the hardware I was running it on would have no problem doing even 4K. 3617 I can do 1080p but I don't think 4K.
  3. Hmm, I must have another issue then because upon trying 1.04b, the bootloader loads and I can install 6.2.1 PAT file but then after install it reboots and I can no longer access DSM, even though bootloader seems to fully load correctly still.
  4. So to confirm, to run 6.2.1 with 1.04 loader on ESXI 6.7, I just need to have an Intel NIC, any Intel NIC added to the VM as passthrough? I don't actually have to use the Intel NIC to pass traffic it just has to be present?
  5. EDIT: I installed and setup DSM 6.1.7 using 1.02b loader on ESXi. This loader and DSM are the same versions where I do have transcoding working on the Dell T300. This setup on ESXi turns out it does NOT work for transcoding, so I think we can conclude that the issue with offline transcoding is related to the hardware of my ESXi host or the fact that DSM is installed on ESXi instead of baremetal. Again, Dell T300 CPU is much older than my R720xd CPU so not sure why offline transcoding would work on older but not newer....
  6. Is there a way to implement DSM users into Plex though? So user's can be permitted in DSM to login to Plex and then use their DSM login to get in? This is one of the reasons I wanted to stick with video station.
  7. Yeah I had a feeling someone would answer this. If I wanted to use Plex I would have just used that already.
  8. So I had DSM 6.1 running in a 3617 loader v1.02 on a Dell T300 baremetal tower. I used the video station package to host my library. Transcoding worked with video station as in I could select playback quality "low" in the video player on either DS Video apps or the web interface and DSM would transcode on the fly and stream me a low quality version of the film or tv show. I can't say for certain but I am pretty sure this was software transcoding since I didn't have a GPU in the machine and I wasn't running the 916 loader. Now.... I have recently switched to a virtual environment with ESXi and have successfully gotten DSM 6.2 running on a 3615 1.03 loader VM. Video station works, but the above transcoding situation does NOT. When I click a different quality besides original, it stops the video, and has a loading wheel that never finishes. If I change back to original, the video plays again. For the life of me, I cannot figure out why.... I am running ESXi on an R720xd with E5-2630v2 CPU which I'm pretty sure is newer than the T300's CPU... Anyone have any ideas where I can begin to debug or fix this issue? I am not even looking for true hardware transcoding, just transcoding to work like it did on the older T300....
  9. Did you upload 6.2.1 as first image after first boot or you installed 6.2 first and then updated to 6.2.1 inside DSM?
  10. What was your process to setup and install 6.2.1 on 3615? Want to give it another try and see if I can narrow down the issue, so figured I should follow instructions from someone who did it successfully. What CPU and NIC are you running?
  11. 6.2 works on 3615xs 1.03b loader but 6.2.1 does not seem to work. And I have an Ivy Bridge CPU... So did they change the kernel again between 6.2 and 6.2.1 and 6.2.1 requires Haswell?
  12. Video station doesn't seem to transcode anything if I use the default serial number in Jun's 1.03b loader with DS3615xs. If I use the serial number generator above, how can I modify the serial of an already existing installation on ESXi? Do I just change it in grub.cfg and re-upload that synoboot.img as the boot drive for VM? Or do things get written to that now that I have been using it and uploading a new one will break everything?
  13. 6.2.1 was a no go for me on 1.03 Loader DS3615xs.
  14. Worked great! Disks seem stable and getting decent write speeds over AFP. ~100-115MB/s

  16. Alright the RDM method sounds fine to me, good mix between will work for what I want without going super crazy breaking other things and flashing firmware etc.... Although I wouldn't be able to create an RDM disk to each RAID 0 array locally would I? It seems when I go to add an RDM disk to the VM in vSphere it asks for the LUN that the disks are on. But my disks are local RAID 0 arrays now in the host. Only have 1 host total and no iSCSI vSANs or anything like that.
  17. I have an R720xd with a Perc H710P 1GB of cache. Ideally I would like to run HW RAID 1 from the Perc on 2 my two SSDs which I then create my OS Datastore on. Then pass all the other 1TB HDDs in the server onto DSM and do the software RAID in there assuming performance isn't affected much as you suggest. Although, from the little reading I did so far, it seems like the 710P doesn't support passing through disks at all? Let alone only some and not others.... New to this storage world so not sure if there is a way to make it work like the above.
  18. Alright, assuming I can pass through just those disks without passing the entire RAID controller.... I could try that, but.... isn't software RAID on DSM much more low performing than HW RAID?

What is everyone's preferred way of virtual disk setup in ESXi and then in DSM Storage Manager to get maximum flexibility and ability to increase storage available to DSM in future whether it is allocating more datastore space to the VM or by replacing the drives backing the datastore with higher capacity ones one at a time (running hardware RAID 5)? My situation is, I have 4 1TB drives running in hardware RAID 5. I am soon getting 2 more 1TB drives and am guessing I can add those to the RAID 5 array giving the array more storage in total. Then I can inflate my datastore to match so now the datastore has more capacity, but as we know even if I then increase the size of the virtual disks in VM settings, DSM will detect a bigger disc but it won't increase the size of the storage pool or volume. I tried JBOD and Basic storage pools (because I am already running hardware RAID, I don't need DSM doing RAID on top of that).

  21. That's what I thought but upon running it I get no such file or directory found, and can't cd manually to that directory either.

  23. 1.04 loader with E5-2630v2 so yeah it would be too old I guess... Looking forward to a 1.04 loader for 3615 then....
  24. Hmm, that was my next thought to try regarding exposing CPU virtualization setting to Guest OS. Well there must be something that changed with the CPUs over the one year difference in age between ours, along with the update they released.
  25. Weird, did you try a fresh install of Moments either on the same VM or a completely new fresh VM? I selected FreeBSD v11 64 bit. I read somewhere else on this forum FreeBSD was best to select.
