  1. the kernel (from synolgy pre made) is responsible so if you checked the logs and can rule out other sources your options are either your bios settings you can change or some kernel parameter in the loaders (like in grub config on "normal" linux systems - as the loaders grub is just a "pre-boot" kernel you will have to add the stuff for synology's kernel elsewhere and that depends on the loader i do remember cases with dsm 6.x where adding a kernel parameter helped
  2. passing through a controller prevents this, i dont use proxmox but and it might depend on the mode you pass a disk into a vm, if its just a sector lba pass through then there will be a problem like that but if its more a device based feature there might be some way to differ the disks on dsm's command line even when the dsm gui does not show any differences its also possible in raw lba to pass a different amount of blocks for every disk like 1.000.001 for disk one, 1.000.002 for disk2 two, ... you just loose e a few blocks per disks and the raid will be created matching the smallest disk still easiest way is to pass through the controller (cant be the controller you used to boot int the hypervisor), and if you have a 6-8 port onboard just use m.2 to boot into hypervisor or buy a cheap 2 port controller and boot the hypervisor from that and pass through the the now free onboard controller
  9. that does leave some room for interpretation, "not start" could mean the hardware does not start at all (no bios message, just a blank screen maybe some beep code) in that case 1st hing would be to check psu and try to start the system with the least possible attached hardware to rule out as much other components if its about software, like bios screen visible, maybe loader still shows its message and then it does not boot into DSM ... in that case depending on the loader you used it could simply be a "wrong" dsm update that does not match the loader and the thing to to might be just to use a newer loader and install a new version of dsm with it (dsm system and data in raid volumes are separate and updating or upgrading dsm does not change the raid volumes in both cases there would be no need for a recovery as its just a case of operating system not starting, nothing to "recover" (as nothing is wrong with the raid) just "use" the working raid in some way DSM uses standard linux software raid (mdadm) and LVM2, so you could just start a recovery linux from a usb media and mount your raid and volume to access the data similar would be to prepare a usb media with open media vault and boot it, that way could access your data over network when the raid data partition is mounted (if your hardware is working or you use a spare where all dsm disks are connected) https://xpenology.com/forum/topic/7004-tutorial-how-to-access-dsms-data-system-partitions/ https://xpenology.com/forum/topic/42793-hp-gen8-dsm-623-25426-update-3-failed/#comment-200475 and if you need a recovery you might have a look at this too (raid recovery is for free) https://www.freeraidrecovery.com/ but you would still need to have enough free sata ports to connect all you disks edit: example for a real recovery case would be a raid5 set of 4 disks and after a power drop out (without ups) there are only two disks valid in the raid set, as redundancy of raid5 is one disk the raid set is failed and thats it for DSM, only option offered is to delete and create new - thats the point where recovery comes in, mdadm (used software raid in DSM) uses a sequence number for write events and only the disks with the highest number will still be valid as part of the raid set, the two disks that are shown as failed have lower numbers, depending on the conditions its possible to ignore that and "push" the disk with the least difference back into the raid set, after that ist3 disks and would be within the 1 disk fail condition of raid5, so you would be able to access it again, that raid set in the end will be used with a file system (like ext4 or btrfs) and the file system might be able to deal with it or at least you would be able to read most of the files again, depending on the amount of lost writes on the 3rd pushed in disks there might be erros in the file system or the content of files you will have to deal with (of live with) depending of the recovery software and time used you might be able to pinpoint the missing parts from the raid set to the file system and to the files in question to exactly know what files might be not ok and need to be checked to still work and be consistent for further use there are a lot more possible recovery cases and in a professional environment you would not use the original disks/data but disk image files instead of the original disks as you are trying not to change the state the original disks are in to not deepen the problems (like hardware defects on disks) or want to have more the one try to recover data (depending on the situation you might need to find out the right configuration of things as of missing information and doing it with the original disks you have just one try and can't revers it if it s not the right choice), with image files und copy's of them you can start over and have another go with a different method, different assumptions of the state things are in or a different recovery software haste and hurry are your biggest foes and planing is key, even if you buy new bigger disks to store the image files might pay of as after you are finished you will need disks for backup (as you have learned now you should not go without) or even buy new nas hardware as you will later need a stable system to run your recovered data from - it depends on how much you need your data or what they are worth from your point of view
  10. did you add a virtual disk to the vm's config in VMM? the vmdk is just the boot media (loader), you would at least need one (virtual) disk to install dsm in that VM, on newer dsm installs its ~20GB for dsm istself and some space is needed as data volume to at least install packages in dsm, i guess the storage for recordings can alter be mounted in same way from the main/host system (would be nor verry effective to have a extra virtual disk in the host for recordings)
  12. as long as you can see the SN of the disks it will be ok and when doing recovery you should never expect to know the order of the disks, check after reboot as adding or removing disks might change things but as long as checking the Sn of the disks it should work thats the case with the lsi hba, i never had a hp hba with it mode so i could not check if its the case with sas controllers in general or just lsi in general dsm (that is using mdadm) can handle the change of disk positions as mdadm can keep track of that by itself
  13. yes lspci would clear things as the pci id should be different for asm1162 and asm1164 1B21:1166, 1B21:1164, 1B21:1162
  14. at least 10, it should be 12 as long as the board/bios support bifurcation it should work but at some point the housing need to be bigger and the board will not be limited to mini-itx and its single 16x slot and with a bigger atx/e-atx board there might be enough real pcie slots so no need to mess around with m.2 adapters or the other direction might be bigger disks - thats what i did a while ago by replacing 12x4TB with 4x16TB (now my 6 x sata onboard are more then enough) also power consumption and noise can be a factor when thinking about more disks or replacing disks i bought 2 different adapters with m.2 to pcie, the longer one (~25cm) did not work reliable enough for storage, there where some strange log messages indication problems, so keeping it as short as possible and testing it before using in an a productive system would be important, there can be quality differences even when ordering the same item
  15. according to the product sheet its jmb585, so all 5 ports will be working in dsm the metal housing looked nice (more stable) but pricing was not in my scope and i also have m.2 pcie 4x/16x slot adapters to add normal pcie cards https://www.silverstonetek.com/upload/sstedm/ECS07/ECS07-Product_Sheet-EN.pdf looks like they kind of added some mitigation to the "thin board" problem, hopefully its more then just a rubber pad how did you deal with the mechanical forces coming from the 6 sata cables? (might be less of a problem if the board is stiffer or the cables more flexible) the 5 port problem might be some weird xpe thing with the number of ports, so it might depend on dsm type used and sata ports already in the system, best way to test that would be to disable all onboard sata (the whole chip not just single ports of it) and check the log in xpe about the numbering of the ports
  16. any link you can provide about that? the card you point to at amazon mentions a asm1062 (pcie gen2 up to 2 lanes and 2 sata ports) it does not mention any other chip but the markings on the card are "SA3034A" and when searching for that i also find information's that this card uses a ASM1064 chip and that's a 4 port sata chip https://www.asmedia.com.tw/product/A58yQC9Sp5qg6TrF/58dYQ8bxZ4UR9wG5 from that information it does not look like dsm would support sata multiplier ootb, just some unreliable information about the hardware used
  17. baremetal i3-9100 with dva1622 (also low spec gemini lake cpu in original hardware) looks ok for me on my i3-9100 maybe a base dsm system with (lower specs) older cpu as base like 3615 might perform better for you? 7-Zip [64] 16.02 : Copyright (c) 1999-2016 Igor Pavlov : 2016-05-21 p7zip Version 16.02 (locale=en_US.utf8,Utf16=on,HugeFiles=on,64 bits,4 CPUs x64) x64 CPU Freq: - - - - - - - - - RAM size: 15858 MB, # CPU hardware threads: 4 RAM usage: 1618 MB, # Benchmark threads: 4 Compressing | Decompressing Dict Speed Usage R/U Rating | Speed Usage R/U Rating KiB/s % MIPS MIPS | KiB/s % MIPS MIPS 22: 17878 327 5325 17393 | 189664 398 4068 16181 23: 18316 351 5318 18662 | 187350 399 4067 16210 24: 18321 363 5433 19699 | 184327 399 4060 16181 25: 17764 366 5549 20283 | 180801 397 4049 16091 26: 14838 367 4929 18082 | 177973 398 4032 16055 ---------------------------------- | ------------------------------ Avr: 354 5311 18824 | 398 4055 16144 Tot: 376 4683 17484
  19. the other option (also for getting to the data on the raid volumes) is to boot a recovery/live linux or open media vault the network config is stored in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ you would need to mount the raid1 sys volume (1st partition on every disk) manually https://xpenology.com/forum/topic/7004-tutorial-how-to-access-dsms-data-system-partitions/ https://xpenology.com/forum/topic/42793-hp-gen8-dsm-623-25426-update-3-failed/#comment-200475 also with the newer iterations of the loaders it should be possible to reach the console usually available be serial cable just from the loader when monitor and keyboard are connected (like this: https://github.com/fbelavenuto/arpl-addons/blob/main/console/manifest.yml) so dont break a sweat just because dsm does not boot anymore or you loose network connection, you can keep a boot media with open media vault ready to use if you want and would be able to access your data if dsm does not work (like after updating it) and you also would be able to access the dsm system raid1 or do a backup
  21. independent from that, dsm is build around lvm2 and mdadm as software raid and single disks, depending on the raid hardware used there might not be a driver to use it with dsm places a system partition on every disk as raid1 so as long as even one disks is still alive dsm will start and you can look for the raid (repair/restore) lets assume to have a "hardware" raid of 3 disks then dsm would see one disk and it would end in a single system partition, in case 2 disks fail the hardware raid is broken and cant start, then its also no dsm to start, 3 separate disks would have 3 raid1 partitions for dsm system and 3 raid5 partitions, two fail and you would still be able to run dsm (and depending of the problems could try to repair the raid5 or "force" it to work and selvage data) as for raid0 vs. jbod, in case of a one disk fail both will loose data but in raid0 all data will be lost and in jbod you would still be able to use recovery tools to get some data off the disk still working (and in most cases also from the 2nd faild disk - depending on how far you want to go, without raid0 way easier to dig into that as its just file system to reconstruct) raid0 might gain some speed but with a 1 gbit network you will not see any of this, so no usable gain for the higher risk of data loss
  23. after 7.2 release they made 7.1 source available https://archive.synology.com/download/ToolChain/Synology NAS GPL Source/7.1.1-42962
  24. you would either need to disable memory and file quiesce (and any application awareness) in the job or install vmware tools in dsm https://xpenology.com/forum/topic/66323-open-vm-tools-für-dsm-71711/ https://github.com/AuxXxilium/synology-dsm-open-vm-tools/releases/
