  1. hello

    i run XPEnoboot 5.2-5565.2 on a HP microserver N54L with 3 drives.

First problem is that i can't found xpenology with Synology Assistance.

Then every time i start up xpenology, it looses the settings for Windows File Service & Mac File Service

and i re-enable them every time..

    Screen_Shot_2015_10_07_at_23_44_08.png

i get the "-" which means "error", instead of the checked mark.

I'm thinking to update the xpenoboot with the following steps which is found here http://xpenology.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=42163#p42163 (thanks goes to andywhit)

i also found that i get a FAILED when xpenoboot boots.. and also the following

Partition layout is NOT Diskstation style.

    NOT EXECUTE /sbin/e2fsck

should i try to update xpenoboot and DSM or its to risky to loose all my data?

unfortunately i don't have all the space required to make a full back up, only partial.

    thanks

  2. Perform these steps -> viewtopic.php?p=42163#p42163

That will get you to update 2. Then manually install updates 3&4. (You will need to reboot twice after update 3).

Also update 3 will reset your DLNA folder locations if you've got any media content so these need to be reconfigured in VideoStation/MediaStation and reindex media.

    thanks!

but i already have DSM 5.2-5565 Update 2...

or the above steps for the update 2, goes to update the XPEnoboot?

right now i boot from XPEnoboot 5.2-5565.2-d6e5157.

  3. hello i have an HP n54l with XPEnoboot 5.2-5565.2

    with DSM 5.2-5565 Update 2..

every time i boot, it gets me to the DSM UPDATE screen because there is the new update (5.2-5592 Update 3 and now 5.2-5592 Update 4)

although i have disable the task manager to search for updates..

which is the right way to update from DSM 5.2-5565 Update 2 to 5.2-5592 Update 4?

through Control panel > Update & restore > DSM update?

Manual DSM update? Update now button? some other method?

also every time i boot the server, the Windows File Service & Mac File Service are disabled and i every time i need to go to Control Panel > Info Center > Services to re unable them.. is this a well known bug?

  4. They are typically tied to the same release nowadays. Meaning, use 5592.x of the boot image for 5592 builds of DSM. But the boot image is really just to give the appropriate HAL for the DSM to run (trick DMS into thinking it is on Syno hardware).

    yes i know that.

so if i shut down my n54l and unplug the usb stick,

    plug it to my pc

and copy/paste all the contents to another usb stick

would i have a back up of the original bootloader usb stick?

    thanks

  5. The only concern you would have is if you changed the serial/mac address or vid/pid for the usb drive. Otherwise, the stick is only used to boot the device and is not particularly unique.

so we can make another boot usb anytime with any version of nanoboot?

or we need the exact same version, that we had, when we first installed xpenology?

    thanks

  6. I'd stick with Intel board for compatibility. I use the Asus Maximus Gene VI which has 8 SATA3 ports built in. Make sure the 6+ ports on your board are all full SATA3. The reason I went up to micro-ATX form is because of that.

No graphic card needed, fast, and stable. It also has plenty of USB 3 ports, supports WOL.

    Thanks!

Intel based motherboards (the asus Maximus costs as one hp n54l) are expensive and if I go these route, I prefer to buy a 4bay synology from the j series, or a hp n54l, cause I don't need the extra power..

I would like to built something that doesn't cost more than an hp microserver n54l..

  7. i didn't find any of the above motherboards available.

    the fractal design node 304 http://www.fractal-design.com/home/prod ... -304-black

    supports mini-ITX (170 x 170 mm) and the bigger mini-DTX (203 x 170 mm or 8 x 6,7 inches)

could you please recommend me some motherboards that supports:

    1) xpenology usb3 and wake on Lan (optional)

    2) with 6 or more SATA and 1 eSATA (optional)

    3) mini-ITX or mini-DTX (203 x 170 mm or 8 x 6,7 inches)

    4) doesn't cost a fortune.. supports cheap cpu and not an i3, i5 etc

    thanks

  9.

can i install xpenology (any version) on a Hp gen8?

n54l can take 6 drives but i think that Hp gen8 can only take up to 5 discs because there isn't eSATA on the back of Hp gen8.. only USB ports.. am i missing something?

    Yes, is possible.

I got a HP Gen 8 microserver upgraded with a XEON processor and 16 Gb ram ... And have a hyper V environment with DSM 5.0 running.

Is it possible to have six drives on a Gen8 case like n54l on the ODD space? does have 6 Sata connection?

  10. Hello

I would like to built a nas with xpenology on a fractal design node 304 and i would like to know, if there is a trouble free and not pricey motherboard, that support 6 Sata, or more sata.

Node 304 can hold 6x 3,5'' hard drives but i don't know if i can mount more drives with a nexus double twin, or any other way.

Do i also need to check if there is any compatibility issues for the cpu, power supply (psu) and memory that i should use?

or any cpu, psu and memory is compatible with xpenology?

    thanks in advance!

  11. I was going to cheer but then I realized it uses a custom image. This is bad for all kinds of reasons.

    Bummer.

    please name a few..

    thanks

    also i just confirm this..

This is a guide for using a single HDD obviously this is for people with only 1 HDD and obviously it means there wont be redundancy but it is mainly so that you don't need nanoboot on a separate USB.

so its better to stick with the following guide that uses a USB stick and the image from the xpenology.nl site

INSTALL SYNOLOGY DSM 5.0 (4493) (ESXI / NON ESXI)

    http://cyanlabs.net/Thread-Install-Synology-DSM-5-0-4493-ESXi-Non-ESXI

  12. ok

heres a guide how to install DSM without USB stick, and its more like the original synology nas.

and it makes the whole process of installing XPEnology, extremely easy.

just wondering..on an official synology nas, the DSM installs/clones its OS on all the drives that we have on the nas,

so if a particular drive fails the DSM will boot from the other disks.. correct me if i m wrong.

with the above guide of installation (which is only install the DSM os on one drive and thus having only one copy of DSM), if that particular drive (OS DSM) dies, we can't access the DSM.

another issue is that we don't know if the package/image from these release is safe..

    am i missing something?

    Your suggestions are welcome

  13. The BIOS reset every time that I enable the start up from "power schedule". Strangely the shut down action, don't cause Bios reset, only the start up.

i run XPEnology nanoboot DSM 5.0-4493 update 2 on a HP microserver n54L with 6 drives.

I dont plan to use "power schedule" but i would like to know if there is a fix?

also if these BIOS reset problem could triggered by another action/feature/service? i.e. using WOL..

For flashing the bios I have the following guide
